Personally no, I don't like it.I don't believe that. Say DDC again lol. It rubs off on ya.
It's competing with DART for my affection which is a hard horse to beat. I also don't like that it doesn't work the "art" into it.

I see no need to hand out labels like "irrelevant" to our fellow members and human beingsas someone who has had long conversations with Ethang on DDO I can attest that this won't offend him, and it's also accurate.
I understand that eth has a tough hide and I wasn't trying to suggest he was being made into a special victim.
I just think it's silly to fight about who is relevant or irrelevant. One side's gonna argue it was more relevant because of spread, the other side will argue it was more relevant because of activity, and it will go nowhere. It's petty. Everyone's relevant to someone or someones and the value of any group or place is completely subjective. I certainly don't consider people from outside the old religion forum irrelevant.
And fwiw, I think your description in post #13 was quite accurate. I would say even self-evidently so, in my case. I just don't see any shame in it. Although as someone who is not concerned with covered-up DDO identities, I realize your post was not addressed to me. And I'm confused about how the religion forum users were irrelevant and unheard of, but also "everyone here however knows the religious users". 🤔 ??

Seriously, no one likes DDC? I'm not going for what is proper, but it has a nice ring to it. It rolls off the tongue as easy as DDO did. Not to be mean but DART sounds kinda dumb. I'll go with the majority vote but DDC sounds good...."Debateart Dot Com".
Personally no, I don't like it. But it's a matter of taste.
I may just say screw it and use DebArt. Sounds like crap and barely shortens anything, but at least people would know what I'm talking about.
Created:

It's only going to be used by the members, like DDO. For the record, "DDO" made no sense at all.
Didn't think the "dot com" should've gotten billing?

"Biological interventions"? Are we talkin' anaphrodisiacs?So you've sat down and talked with some sex offenders in a counsel capacity? What's that like. Is there any acknowledgment at all that they knew it was wrong, or are they just totally remorseless and vacant of empathy?I have (I'm a Social Worker). Many offenders are anti social(among other things) which many describe as prefrontal cortex issue since thats where complex ideas and behaviors form.As a side note..... the Agency I work for views violent crime from a public health perspective and in such have concluded that simple biological interventions ,either separately or in conjunction with psychological interventions like cognitive behavioral therapy , have the ability to reduce violent behavior.

I admit I'm curious why Mike chose the name "debateart" to begin with. I've been guessing he was going for a "the art of debate" kind of thing, but it still struck me as odd.Yeah. I'm just saying I don't know how using ART in the abbreviation helps distinguish us from an art site with Art in the name.
Created:

@Smithereens
The site's icon is literally DA.
This is about popular usage, not official branding. That's not our decision. I'm asking about how it should commonly be referred to by members here on site but more importantly off site. Everyone has been using different abbreviations which could be confusing to prospective new members. Ideally I'd like to see some uniformity in our usage.
I don't see anything particularly wrong with DA but it doesn't do much to distinguish itself or the site.

This has been disturbing me for two days.So you've sat down and talked with some sex offenders in a counsel capacity? What's that like. Is there any acknowledgment at all that they knew it was wrong, or are they just totally remorseless and vacant of empathy?Not completely as a counselor, one on one, but it's a day program and we have sat in on their group. They sort of know it's wrong but still have little to no remorse. Or it's such a compulsion they have to really tamp it down and abstain from most sexual stuff like even normal porn. I will say the ones who do the counseling and actually engage are better at trying to not offend then the ones who don't. But we had a guy in a nursing home, can't get hard, trap another resident from his chair in her chair. She's non verbal and assaulted her even though he couldn't get erect. He is on dialysis and dying. Still dangerous.

Am I reading this right? Wikipedia says Panzram broke into President William Howard Taft's home, stole his gun, and used it in his murders.
Edit: ah didn't see your last link.

@EtrnlVw
Well I don't know about "interest" but one of the worst I read up on was Carl Panzram, he's not even on the main circuit of who gets mentioned and he was by far the most "evil" of any I've read about. Don't get me wrong they are all bad, but this guy in particular really worries me and actually after reading his case and the notes he wrote in prison about all his alleged sodomy victims and murders made me ill, I kind of left it alone after that. Not cool, people do some twisted stuff.
If you read up on him, doesn't that mean he caught your interest? Surprisingly I've never heard of him. I wonder how much of what he wrote about himself was true. Serial killers tend to lie, change their stories, claim different body counts at different times.
Why do you consider him the most evil?

@XLAV
If there are movie classics, book classics and music classics, then there's serial killer classics. I see Jack the Ripper as a classic serial killer.So does H. H. Holmes, BTK, Zodiac, etc.A lot of the fictional serial killers in Criminal Minds were very interesting too. If some of them were real they'd join in the classic serial killers.
Great show. Takes a lot of inspiration from real killers and cases. The writers really do their homework.

My father was apparently childhood friends with a future serial killer. For privacy reasons, I won't specify which.

A good point, the Zodiac Killer is probably a better comparison. But the Zodiac Killer is himself quite iconic because it happened at a time when television and the rapid news cycle were starting to get established fmpov.It was highly sensationalized, but also presented widespread coverage and an example in action of how widespread media coverage can affect the behaviors of a killer, and even feed into it 🤔
I think she also made a good point about the "terror on the streets" factor. In that capacity, maybe Son of Sam would be an arguable comparison -- though again, Berkowitz was himself iconic and well publicized.

I do not understand the logic in using “DART”.To explain: Debate.Org is referred to as “DDO” — and this is because it is common to shorten names and titles. However, one would normally use single letters for each word in the name or title.“DART” makes no sense as it attempts to conjoin a letter with the second part of a title, as opposed to shortening the title by exclusively using the first letters to both, or all, parts of it.This is what an abbreviation is.
This is what's been occupying my thoughts on the matter. Do we go logical or do we go snazzy. It wouldn't be the first abbreviation to warp the rules to achieve a better sounding name.
Created:

@Zeichen
"DA" is sufficient.
Some people do use that. Personally I think DART is cooler. DA is kind of generic.

I'm undecided about how to type the abbreviation. Obviously this is a huge issue that demands its own thread. Huge. Whether we succeed or fail as a forum depends on what we decide, here, today, in this topic. Think about how you will be remembered by posterity. Do you want your children to know you as the person who advocated for what turns out to be the unpopular abbreviation? Don't bring that shame on them.

Also I'd like to point out a few things. First is that this website has no income unlike DDO (at least in the past), ads barely work anymore because of all kinds of ad blockers and it requires lots of traffic anyway to make any money outta it. I'll probably come up with some donation system but I don't imagine it will cover more than hosting services and a couple cups of coffee for me. Also considering that the website mostly operating in the US area, paying for some Google search positioning services out of my own pocket would simply get me broke, so that ain't an option. And the last thing I'd like to mention is that DDO is 10 years old and at some point of time it had lots of people working on it (or so I think, not sure though), whereas this website is 1 month old and there are 1.5 - 2.5 people working on it and not even full time so it's also limiting ...But if you have any suggestions, I am always open for those :)
I understand, Mike. I don't expect the forum to become an instant success. And I don't expect you to pay for any expensive services. At the end of the day, this site is just recreation.

This is how it is though, the religion forum never really did interact with any of the other forums. You were your own island and now that you're seeing the rest of us for the first time we're unfamiliar faces. Everyone here however knows each other and knows the religious users. You know other religious users and nobody beyond that.
WHO ARE YOU.

Damn straight.You know what... i just might have to stick around and keep you all out of trouble ;p I've noticed you venturing out into the "popular" threads... where everyone knows each other except of course the cursed "religion people." Lol. I actually like it... the outcasts. I've always adored such a position. But... this site really does move slow... i've always been the 'in the fast lane' type of guy.
Yeah I guess I've been inflicting myself on the regulars instead of keeping to the religion forum like on DDO. No one has given me a GTFO yet but I'm sure the temptation is great. Like "who is this new annoying person I've never heard of, am I gonna have to put up with her all the time now". (Yes. My deepest condolences.)
Activity's pretty slow, no doubt about it. Been trying to think about what we could do to change that.

... Well the place isn't even finished yet, guys. Don't you think decisive conclusions are at least a little premature? 🤔 The site's only been open a few weeks and is still in beta. Mike hasn't even implemented the moderator system yet. So basically none of us have seen what a fully moderated DART looks like. I think we should try to be patient. He's been trying to get the site ready and play babysitter in the meantime, and surprise, job juggling hasn't produced great results. We haven't exactly been making things easy for him.
I don't know what the finished product of DART will look like, but I do know what the finished product of DDO looks like, and I feel no temptation to take it back as my primary. Members have no voice on DDO to reach the Powers That Be. Juggle is cold and distant and obviously not invested in its own site or community. Here we have an admin who's active and listening. And the biggest factor of all for me? On DDO I know there will be zero hope of moderation or order. Here there is definite hope of moderation. It's on the schedule, in fact.

Well, DDO slowly looks like it's coming back. I don't think i will be using this site when it does come back. I already stopped using debate island bc of this site... but, DDO is my main. I've been a loyal little soldier lol.
Nope. Sorry. You're staying. I'm revoking your visa. The gang is sticking together and at the end of the movie we're meeting in the amusement park to sing we go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong. Possibly others from the Grease soundtrack.

I arguably had the most activity around my name.This is incorrect.In fact, people who did not use the religion forum on DDO have no knowledge of who you are. You were an irrelevant member there, and are an irrelevant member here.
I see no need to hand out labels like "irrelevant" to our fellow members and human beings.

I've totally changed my mind, that plan is foolproof. I don't know how I didn't see it before. Absolutely airtight.

@EtrnlVw
So I've watched about 6 episodes of season 1. Definitely enjoying it. I don't know how long it's been since you watched season 1, but this is where I'm at:
-- Guy had to quit because he lost his ferro rod. It fell on the beach and the tide carried it away. I was laughing so hard. I felt for him though. His entire effort was ruined by one single stupid mistake. Surviving without a fire in that environment would have been absolute misery. You'd be reduced to barely crawling by.
-- I knew the cop would be the first to tap out as soon as he got off the boat.
-- I couldn't believe the one who looks like a hipster chose to devote his early energy to trying to build a log cabin. It was such a massive waste of his body's reserves.
-- So many of them say things like "I didn't know it would be like this" or "I didn't sign up for this". They had to know what they were getting into. Or maybe they didn't and that's why they signed up.
-- "Go away, bear. Go away. This is my side. I'm bigger than you. I'm bigger than I really am. Go away. Oh shit, he's not buying it. He's coming." Lulz.

Here's a good example of what I meant by innocent believers and corrupt sick practitioners. Check out this Catholic Priest that slaps this baby in the face in front of the babies own parents. Look at the countenance of the parents, and look at the countenance of that demon priest, looks like he would eat the face off that baby if no one was around, makes me sick. I would have leveled that guy right there in that church if I was that father.
WHAT THE SHIT.

Should I show people your post history on ddo?
I think you shouldn't. When we drag up a member's personal history on DDO it always turns into a flamewar of dirty laundry. We don't need more of those. I know he brought you up first, but a retaliatory smear campaign isn't going to help anything.*

I agree these problems were to be expected. They're occupational hazards of any forum, our ex-forum more so than most. But hitting turbulence doesn't mean the plane is going down. It means you want a pilot with a steady hand on the controls. I have faith Mike can be that pilot, or appoint a worthy co-pilot.
In a new forum it's not unusual to see a brief initial period of anarchy. People test the limits until there's pushback from an administration that lays down the law and establishes its authority. I can understand why you'd be impatient for that to happen soon.
If the contents of a post contain nothing but a personal attack that you did not provoke, it should just be reported to Mike immediately. Not much else we can do, except block them. He should quickly get an idea of who is consistently antagonistic. I know you've done your due diligence when it comes to reporting aggression. Hopefully the new ability to keep someone from @ing you will further mitigate our troubles.

You guys continue to provide evidence for moderation demands
If Mike is really working on a more robust block function that will extend to forum posts, I think it'll help clear a lot of this up. Maybe even without him having to appoint a premature moderator. Depends on how soon the improved block will be implemented.

I agree that it's amazing human intelligence came to exist in this universe. But why do you think reality is infinite? Our study of the universe seems to suggest that it had a beginning and it will have an end.

Buddamoose responded to me with five posts in a row in this thread. Is there a problem with it? https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/131?page=1
At present, the block function only works with PM's. However, I have spoken with Mikhail today and he plans to extend this function to the forum and debates section(s). This should mean that if you block someone, they cannot respond to any posts that you make.
Oh then this sounds like a great solution. I think it'll relieve a lot of this tension and conflict.
