According to RM logic they both stole from Quora actually.

Wait, how can there be a 75% yes with 10 people voting? 75% would mean that 7.5 people voted yes.
Only 8 people voted on that policy. 6 voted yes. 6 is 75% of 8.

What is one reason DDO fell apart.
-->
@User_2006
Pretty much the spam bots, which were allowed to grow as much as they did due to site owners not implementing any meaningful methods of controlling them. There have been many other things blamed for the fall of DDO as this thread demonstrates but if it was not for the spam bots (and to a lesser extent the bugs, which can also be blamed on Juggle) I honestly think DDO would be just as big or bigger now as it was when I first joined it around '15 or '16. Those other factors are outrageously small.

@Crocodile
You won't be able to log on even if you want to.
For example, if DART was a reason behind you 18 hr internet sessions, you could get rid of it.
This is severely flawed as demonstrated in practice by examples such as when RM proclaimed to be fighting an addiction to the site prior to one of his several self-bans. It is demonstrated more clearly in theory here:

Let us say for example that someone is 'addicted' to DART. They have two methods available to them that I can think of.

1) Try not to log in

2) Self-ban

Now, can you think of any problem with method one that cannot also be said of method two?

I can't.

Star Control Mafia Endgame
My thoughts on balance:

Most of the town roles functioned as double-edged swords with potential positive utility and potential negative utility.

Hider - Had the potential to prevent a kill, also had the potential to give mafia an extra kill (which is what ended up happening, meaning the hider was way weaker than a vanilla).

Roleblocker - Could have prevented a kill, also could have blocked a townie from saving the day (ended up doing neither of these things and affected the game as much as a vanilla).

Jailkeeper - Inherently designed as a double-edged role and treated as such in the balance considerations.

Suicide Bomber - Do I even need to explain how this could have gone horribly wrong for town? Even if they hit scum an SB is way weaker than a 1x vig and people rarely say 1x vigs are OP...

The strongest role in the game for either side was the watcher. In fact the whole balance was built around the watcher and the role copy. With such a small group and the mafia visiting up to three players a night the watcher had a significant chance of catching scum directly (and actually did so NP 1), plus if people were actually playing the game watcher could be used to confirm roles.

The role copy/role cop team on the other hand in a role madness game like this allowed the scum a variety of options for roles to pick up while town already had so many double-edged roles to deal with.

Since none of you really played after DP 1 I consider this setup to still be entirely untested.

Star Control Mafia Endgame
Result

Mafia wins. Kinda. Actually no, town loses. That's more accurate.

Foreword

If I knew that people had stopped playing mafia I never would have started this game. I incorrectly assumed people were still playing because I was promoted by multiple people within a short span of time when my turn to mod came up and the signups signups filled relatively quick.

Mafia Roles

Speedrace - You are the Supox and your ship class is the Blade. Your species is the only known species of sentient plants, though scientists from all races (including your own) generally agree that it is impossible for plants to develop sentience naturally. Your species has good relations with the Utwig and along with them join the New Alliance of Free Stars during the Second Doctrinal Conflict. Your tendency to imitate other races as part of your diplomatic strategy makes you the Role Copy. Once per night you may choose a player to imitate. You gain that players role, though they do not lose their role as a result. During any subsequent night you may choose a player to target with the role you copied (though you will not be told what that role is until after you use it) or you may choose a different player to copy (and subsequently lose the previous role you copied). In addition to this you may communicate via PM with your partner SupaDudz and choose for one of you to target a player with a kill action each night. You and your partner SupaDudz win with the Mafia.

SupaDudz - You are the Zoq-Fot-Pik and your ship class is the Stinger. Your culture consists of three species that developed sentience on the same planet at around the same time. Your low technology level and remote location relative to the conflict prevented you from taking part in that war, though during the Second Doctrinal Conflict you joined the New Alliance of Free Stars formed by the Humans and provided valuable intelligence in exchange for military protection. Your intel gathering skill makes you the Role Cop. Once per night you may select a target. If your action is successful your targets role will be revealed to you, though not their character. In addition to this you may communicate via PM with your partner speedrace and choose for one of you to target a player with a kill action each night. You and your partner speedrace win with the Mafia.

Town Roles

oromagi - You are the Umgah and your ship class is the Drone. You were among the first races to submit to joining the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. You are generally best known for your tendency to play 'pranks' upon alien races, especially the Spathi. These practical jokes, however, often have severe negative consequences for your victims. Because of this you are the Roleblocker. Once per night you may choose a player to target. If your action is successful that player will be unable to perform any action that night. You win with the Town.

LittleCookie08 - You are the Humans and your ship class is the Cruiser. Your unusually strong industrial base played a useful role in fight the Ur-Quan Slave War when first enlisted into the Alliance of Free Stars by Chenjesu diplomats. Despite this your overall average biology and low tech level make you the Vanilla. You have no special ability. You win with the Town.

Ragnar - You are the Arilou and your ship class is the Skiff. Not much is known to outsiders about your race other than the fact that you revealed yourselves to the Alliance of Free Stars and insisted on being granted membership shortly after the Humans joined during the Ur-Quan Slave War. It is later revealed that you have had a special interest and possibly a guiding hand in the development of the Humans as a species for many centuries. Because of this you are the Watcher. Once per night you may choose a player to target. If your action is successful you will be given a list of players that visited your target that night. You win with the Town.

Warren42 - You are the Spathi and your ship class is the Discriminator. You were forced to join the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls as the result of an Umgah prank during the Ur-Quan Slave War. Thouth your race posseses huge potential (having developed from the equivalent of the bronze age to an early space age level of technology in around 100 years) you are largely held back in many fields such as exploration, military, and diplomacy by your extreme natural cowardice (the aforementioned technological leap made possible only by a desire to leave their homeworld and colonize the moon to escape the 'Evil Ones'). Because of this you are the Hider. Once per night you may choose a target. If your action is successful you become untargetable by any kill for the night. However, if your target dies you will die as well. You win with the Town.

PressF4Respect - You are the Shofixti and your ship class is the Scout. Your strong militaristic culture can be attributed to being uplifted by the militaristic Yehat, and naturally you joined the Alliance of Free Stars with them during the Ur-Quan Slave War. Though your ships are unimpressive on their own they each carry a Glory Device for use in combat. The nature of this device makes you the Suicide Bomber. Once per game you may choose a player to target in the night. If your action is successful you and your target will die. This kill is considered a strongman kill. You win with the Town.

Pie - You are the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za and your ship class is the Dreadnaught. Your philosophy which you call The Path of Now and Forever requires that you attempt to enslave all races in the galaxy. For this purpose you created the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls in order to wipe out the stiff resistance offered by the Chenjesu and their allies in their sector of the galaxy. Your ability to create impenetrable Slave Shields makes you the Jailkeeper. Once per night you may target a player of your choice. If your action is successful your target will be protected that night, though they will also be unable to perform any night actions. You win with the Town.

User_2006 - You are the Yehat and your ship class is the Terminator. Your species was the first among the Alliance of Free Stars to encounter the VUX some time prior to the Ur-Quan Slave War, though due to their xenophobic culture you never developed close diplomatic ties with them. Your Terminator warship is well known for its ability to deploy an impenetrable but energy hungry shield, making you a 1x Bulletproof. Once per game if you are targeted by a killing role you will be automatically protected. You win with the Town.

Theme

Races that appeared in the first Star Control were town. Mafia was made up of races that were only introduced in the second game. This left seven races open for mafia to fake claim (there were 14 races in the original) but since town didn't even bother to play mafia decided to not even bother fake claiming.

Balance

Before DP 1 my opinion was that the balance was slightly scum-sided though not as much as their lopsided "victory" would suggest. Since no game actually occurred this opinion of mine remains untested. When laying out the rules in DP 1 OP I originally meant to inform the players that no two players had the same role, including vanillas. I forgot to include this information. Had the players played the game this oversight would have made me feel guilty. Since no game in fact occurred I feel no guilt.

oro - block pie
Pie - jail cookie (failed)

That said, if people turn out to have no desire for it, that would be one item off his list. Whereas if they want reports to have written details, it's one code tag (not even a line) added when he builds it, so for information gathering it seems useful, even if there will not be any timely results from two out of the three potential results.

I think DDO had something like this as well as a list of checkmark items listing all the valid reasons a post could be reported. Maybe a list like that would help in statistical data gathering but I don't see the point of requiring an RFD for reporting a post. The post is either going to be against the CoC or it isn't and nothing the reporting person says will change that either way.

At any rate I don't see any reason for anything remotely like this to be MEEPed. This seems more like a discussion for the thread Mike has set aside for site feature suggestions.

That precise reason (shortage of confidence), seems a fair estimate.

"There exists a natural cure for every possible disease"

"Public prayer is currently illegal in the United States"

"UFOs exist"

These are a few examples of debates I have seen. Do you think it is equally fair for either pro or con to go first in all these cases?

If I say "the reason I do X is because Y" you could say:

1) Actually you have no reason for doing X.

or you could say...

2) I disagree that Y is a logical reason to do X.

In the OP you are saying the first but in post 8 you are saying the second. Which is it then?

I've asked, but no one has ever given me an adequate reason why such a format is desirable.

The claim that nobody has ever answered this question for you in the past is a false one. When you asked me this question about two months ago it was explained quite clearly that the purpose of doing this is often to make it so that the contender lays out arguments first.

An exact copy-paste quote of my answer to you at that time follows:

The net effect of rule one does not remove any rounds from either side, it merely reduces the total rounds by one and allows you to go first (since you are the one introducing the definition). This is because I am not able to set who goes first when creating the debate.

The DP has ended in a no-lynch! Please submit check-ins promptly.

Hold! What you are doing to us is wrong! Why do you do this thing?

Alien, you have spoken the Words, and you have spoken them rightly. We will tell you our reasons why we enslave all other sentient life. We evolved on a hostile world, the descendants of solitary hunters. In those ancient days, there was no Kohr-Ah or Kzer-Za, only the Ur-Quan. We explored our world, and then the space beyond. Here we met the six races of the Sentient Milieu, which we joined as partners.  It was on a routine planetfall that one of our Milieu scoutships first met the Dnyarri. They were evilly intelligent creatures who could control the minds of others. They wanted to rule the universe. We could not resist them. For thousands of years, we were unthinking slaves to the Dnyarri. The Dnyarri had a special liking for us Ur-Quan so they began to tinker with our genes. They built two Ur-Quan sub-races. One Green, the thinkers and planners, the other Black, the warriors and laborers. When the martyred genius Kzer-Za gave us the secret to defeating the Dnyarri, we destroyed them. Then we decided that we would never again be slaves. We would follow the Path of Now and Forever.  We decided to enslave or imprison all other intelligent life in the galaxy. We had slave-shielded one world, when we learned that the Black Ur-Quan under a new leader, Kohr-Ah, had devised the Eternal Doctrine which called for the `cleansing', the annihilation, of all non-Ur-Quan sentient life. Before we could stop them, they burned the Yuptar race's homeworld and were on their way to the planet of the last remaining free race.

We met the Kohr-Ah in orbit above that planet.

We confronted them.

They would not submit.

We fought.

When our battle was done, the Kohr-Ah were defeated. We exiled them, sent the remnant of the Kohr-Ah fleet into the unknown reaches of the galaxy. Then we began our own migration, moving around the galaxy in the opposite direction of the Kohr-Ah. Captain. You have heard our words. Now you have a decision to make.

Submit to us, the Ur-Quan Kzer-Za, or face our wrath.

-->
@fauxlaw
That your argument goes to a failed site's policies is telling. Ever wonder why DDO failed? You want to duplicate that failure? You want to dumb-down the current default of voters having to do some serious thinking? Thanks, but no thanks.
Nobody has ever wondered why DDO failed because the answer is pretty obvious. (Hint: spam bots).

So even if DDO did have choose winner as its default option that isn't the reason it failed.

But DDO did not have choose winner as it's default option...

Your post is wrong on nearly every conceivable level. Literally the only thing you got right was that DDO failed (a non-sequitor).

Attention interloper - heed this recorded message!

This drone-vessel speaks with the voice and authority of the Ur-Quan. You are trespassing within Ur-Quan space. This world, Earth, may not be approached for any reason. Nor will hostilities against our orbital platform be tolerated.  In addition your ship does not respond to standard Hierarchy identification transmissions and is therefore deemed to be... independent. This is not permissible -- only subservience shall be tolerated. This drone now leaves to inform the Ur-Quan of your transgressions. You are commanded to remain here and await the arrival of the Ur-Quan.
Disobedience will be punished.

Possibly, but not necessarily.

The game will automatically end in scum victory if it becomes impossible for the town to eliminate the mafia before the mafia can eliminate them.

Although you consider us the enemy, these conclusions are flawed. We are your salvation. We bring you peace. A peace built upon OUR social framework imposed upon your planet. A new world order in which your prosperity and security are assured by the Ur-Quan. We will protect you from the hazards of this hostile universe, from dangers so hideous your simple minds cannot imagine their dark scope. Today, we are the enemy. In time, this will change. Soon, you will come to understand the boon of slavery we force upon you and then, you will revere and even love us for this gift.
