I had lamb only a few times in my life, which is odd considering my stepmom and her family are all descended from Greek immigrants and the Greeks really love their lamb, but I remember liking it a lot when I had it.

You should invite me to your next roast, I am only a few hours drive from you lol.

Whenever Mopac gets like this just link him the ten month old thread I linked in post 2. He has ignored it all this time and will probably continue to do so so if everyone just links him that then he has nothing to go on and will eventually become bored. This may eventually lead him to trying to come up with an actual argument for Christianity thus improving the quality of the site.

the pleasure is accepting Jesus in your life, instead of laying down on the job with the pleasures of being paid exorbitant sums of money for performing uninhibited, kinky, phenomenal, and memorable sex acts.

Oh yes, praise Jesus.

But uh... We get to at least try the other side of the coin first right? Just for like a week or two? Maybe a month? Just to make it easier to relate to the target audience and convert them I mean. All for the glory of Jesus.

why should the usa be different?

We should probably switch from the imperial system to the metric system too tbh. I am seriously sick of going to work and dealing with "hey this item needs to be cut down to 90 inches" and having to calculate out in my head "yeah okay that is about seven and a half feet that may actually be a bit too long but I can't really eyeball it, let me grab a calculator, paper, pencil, and measuring tape and take a few minutes to double check".

One of my old jobs used the metric system almost exclusively and dear lord in heaven that was so much easier in every way. I am actually really good at math too. You heard me a few posts ago I am willing to admit when something is not within my area of expertise but I am actually far above average when it comes to math. I grew up in America with the imperial system too... It isn't like I don't understand it. It is just objectively worse in every way than metric.

Like, how long is a kilometer? Well it is about 1000 meters or 100 decameters. Okay, okay. Now how long is a mile? A mile is 5280 feet or like... Hold on let me do the math... a bit under 1800 or so yards. Call it about 1750 give or take 30 or so. I mean this is ridiculous! What am I supposed to do with a number like 5280? How can any civilized society operate under these conditions?

Fuck the imperial system. I bet it's a bunch of asshat politicians that keep us using it too. Fuck politicians. Actually I am going to ask Google right now why we still have to put up with this bullshit in the 21st century. Such bullshit. I bet it really is some politicians fault.

@bmdrocks21
I am not quite sure of why it takes this long. It could be incompetence, as typically happens in government bureaucracies, or it could be that trials take long periods of time.

Actual scientific results take a lot longer than just about everyone not intimately familiar with it tend to assume. You have likely heard the ridiculous and ignorant joke "Fusion is just ten years away, and always will be". In other words fusion must be impossible because if it was possible we would have it by now because they keep hearing that it is coming soon. That is another example of people having unrealistic expectations of research timelines because they lack understanding of the processes taking place behind the curtain. Nothing to do with economics or red tape or society, just how things are. It is unavoidable. This is another thing I would not mind discussing in another thread so as to avoid detailing this one.

@n8nrgmi
the problem is that you are being too abstract.

Yeah, that is pretty unavoidable. Again this is a forum post about the basic concept, not an economics thesis.

And again I think it would be better to take the discussion of government intervention in the economy to the economics forum if you wish to continue it.

@n8nrgmi
you would also need to explain more about 'shortages'.

Certainly. I will be using arbitrary numbers in this example to demonstrate the basic idea, this is obviously not an actual litteral example.

Say it takes 1 pound of cotton to produce a towel and 1 pound of cotton to produce a shirt. In this hypothetical market the laws of supply and demand currently put the cost of cotton at $10 per pound. Company A makes towels and sells them at profit for $20 and company B produces shirts and sells them at $20 each (for the sake of simplicity we are ignoring things such as labor costs, this is a forum post not an economic thesis!). The government decides that the cost of towels is too high and institutes a towel price control to fix the price at $12. Company A is still technically profitable but much less so than if they switch to producing shirts instead. After all they already have a bunch of cotton and even if them switching to shirts causes the price of shirts to drop to $15 due to increased supply and competition a $5 margin is better than a $2 margin.

So company A switches to making shirts and the price of cotton remains stable due to the fact that the demand for cotton remains the same. The problem here is that company A no longer produces any towels. People still need those towels though. The government has, through their good intentions, created a towel shortage.

We could delve deeper into this by discussing how a more economically authoritarian government might try to fix this. Should they institute a towel production quota? Should they put a price control on cotton so that the price is low enough for the margins on shirts and towels to be virtually the same, thus incentivising company A to switch back to towel production on their own to avoid the competition of the shirt market? Both of these solutions and more have their own problems but if you wish to discuss them more in depth I would rather do so in a different thread so as to not derail this one. I would happily explore this rabbit hole with you further if you made such a thread in the economics forum and tagged me in it.

@n8nrgmi
Do you have any ideas about how to control costs if not price fixing?

As I said before no, not really. I am not an expert in any of the fields which would be required to give a good solution to the problem. I have zero formal training in the science of economics or medicine and I am one of the rare type of people that is smart enough to not advance opinions on subjects that I know nothing about other than what I spent a few dozen or so hours reading on the internet.

I suppose you are part of the 99% of the population that thinks they do have a genius solution though. Feel free to lay it out for us if this is the case.

Oh it's on now! I am only going to do rhymes this once just because you did, don't expect me to put in that much effort for any future posts lol.

You were unwanted; your Mom failed an abortion

50% accurate, not that bad for you kid. I think you've earned a peek at some insults that are a bit more sophisticated.

First let's do some math, am I really 25? My profile says April 1st 1995!

You are a fool if you think that's real though I admit the year is not a lie. Count really carefully now with all your fingers and toes and you'll see it's 24 years that I have been alive.

I haven't had my birthday this year yet, the odds that anyone has is less than 2 percent!

But I don't really expect you to understand that basic statistic, you're one of those who think college is basic.

Wanna know what I did with my 'college years'? I got a paycheck to blow shit up that I mostly spent on cheap beers.

I was droppin' bombs and makin' moms while your ass was in the sixth grade watching TV to see the Oscar noms

But maybe it's not fair to compare just yet, you are still in highschool.

But by the time I do actually hit 25 I'll be paying off a mortgage. When you reach that age, college boy, all you'll be paying off is student debts!

@bmdrocks21
Let me know what you disagree with.

I actually don't for the most part, though I think you are basically saying "either allow price gouging because that is currently the best way for companies to be profitable OR fix the system so that price gouging is no longer required" and I would strongly agree that the patent system at least needs to be reformed. Lots I could say on that point that I won't get into because this post would quickly devolve into a multi-page rage against bureaucracy lol.

As for the FDA taking a long time... I don't know as much about how the FDA works as I do about the patent office but I do know about the scientific method and my gut says that "10 years to clear a new drug" is probably not because the FDA is incompetent and more likely because that long of a time period is actually required for trials to be carried out properly.

Like I said I am in general against price controls for much the same reasons that you state. Price controls leading to shortages, shortages leading to government quotas, quotas on unprofitable goods leading to nationalization or governmental subsidization, etc. Over 90% of the time when someone uses the term 'slippery slope' they are bullshitting because they want to advocate for an extremist position of some sort. "Letting the gays marry each other is a slippery slope where next thing you know they will be turning all our kids gay" for example. Governmental control over the economy is one of the few cases where there actually is a slippery slope.

I don't claim to have an answer for how to fix the current healthcare system. I really truly don't and I doubt most people on this site that claim to do either. It is a lot more complicated that many are willing to admit. However, I do have enough experience with it to recognize that it is in need of fixing.

Other countries have cheaper healthcare because they price fix drugs.

In general I do not like price fixing. I am fine with paying $80 for a pair of shoes that only cost $3 to make because I only have to buy shoes every year or so when the old ones get worn out. Paying $400 for a drug that only cost $30 to make and is required for me to live a normal life... That is a bit more of a grey area.

The possibilities for immortality
At best, you would only be delaying the inevitable.

If even. You could take the immortal pill and die in a plane wreck the next day.

This is true. I recall someone doing the math using current death rates in the U.S. and calculated that the average biologically immortal person would live for 500 to 600 years if those death rates remained the same. One of those causes of death taken into account in this figure is suicide though and I think in a society obsessed with immortality suicide rates would likely decrease (probably not to zero I admit) and over the next 300 to 400 years medical technology will improve enough to have a noticeable effect on other factors too.

Nobody will live for an infinite number of years unless the nature of our universe is somehow vastly different than we currently believe. Nobody. Period. It would be cool to do so but it will not happen for a number of reasons. Immortality may be possible, probably not within our lifetime but eventually. Immortality is not infinite life though.

Accepting the impossibly of infinite life helps me to not obsess over it. Perhaps this sounds paradoxical but if there is nothing I can do to change it then why spend effort worrying about it? This acceptance is not easy. Fear of death is hardwired into our psychology by eons of evolution. It took me years to truly accept the inevitability of death even after I came to the logical conclusion that doing so was the best path. Still, eventually I was able to. Mostly.

@oromagi
Hahaha have you read the comments? Everyone saying that the angel is holding a sword in the first pic? LMAO they must not have looked to close at the second pic where the 'sword' is clearly shown to be the roof of a house. It is right in front of their eyes!

If people only saw that the roof was not a sword then they would easily be able to see that the moth is not an angel. The people spreading the false narrative (the pastor and newswoman) don't even bother to hide this damning evidence. They proudly parade proof of their perjury right in front of the audience because they know people will see what they wish to see!

Now that is an apt metaphor.

Iranian is evil. Conservatives win

The obvious implication here is that the people who like blue ties all like Iran for some reason. Do you have any actual cause for making this implication or is it just classic "Red ties don't like blue ties and we also don't like Iran so therefore Iran and blue ties must both like each other herp-dee-derp"?

Any RTS fans?
-->
@Lunatic
never heard of that one

Not surprised because, again, 1999 lol.

They also had a few sequels that were pretty old and a prequel that came out only a few years ago called "Sands of Kharak". I have never played any of the sequels or the prequel so cannot comment on any of them other than pointing out that SoK takes place on the ground so is probably a 2-D battlefield (as are most RTS games I am aware of) whereas the others are fully 3-D.

Actually now I am looking at Google and it appears a Homeworld 3 is on the table for the future. So two decades old and still enough of a following to produce revenue. Yeah. That isn't just all hype and nostalgia, it was just that good. As a matter of fact I would unironically compare the physics engine favorably against most modern RTSs, though I admit that probably says more about the stagnation of the genre than anything (I have played video games since I was four years old, which is about when HW came out, but have never called myself an RTS fan and likely never will).

But again, most people actually care about things like graphics so I can't actually recommend the vanilla original version and have never played any of the spin-offs so cannot recommend those. I guess I could recommend the remastered version. I have never played the remastered version but from what I understand it is just a graphics and UI overhaul. It is available on Steam. If you don't give a shit about graphics you can easily find the original somewhere for free, ben olding games is the first place that comes to mind to check, or I could just email you a copy. File size is less than a third of a gigabyte fully unzipped lmao. The age of floppy disks amirite?

I intended to just write a few sentences but now looks like I made a full post lol. I guess I got a bit carried away, video games are (as you can likely tell) one of my passions.
