Because even if drafter is lying about being a survivor at least his actions align with my own agenda of wanting to get a lynch.

Can I hear your reasonings for VTNLing? I would prefer we lynch every day. Preferably someone that is not a survivor.

In the interest of openness and honesty I will explain my motivations, which seems only fair since I am asking you to explain yours. Basically as a survivor I want as much non-me murder as possible because the sooner the game ends the less NPs there will be and therefore the less chance there is that someone will shoot me.

I gave each SK two different targets. I decided three was too difficult, with all the chaos.

How much info does the SK have regarding their targets? Do they know their name? Their role? Both? Neither?

OSBM II signups
What is OSBM?

Open Setup Bastard Mafia is just plain mafia, with a few elements that are unusual to the usual DDO/DART mafia culture.

Open setup - An open setup game means that I will reveal the game setup in full in the OP of DP1, but not which slots go with which players. For example I may say there is a doc and 6 vanillas versus a goon and a strong man but not which player is the doc or who the mafia are.

Bastard - The setup and game mechanics I have planned match one or more requirements to be considered 'bastard' as defined below:

The nature of these bastard mechanics will remain my secret until the start of DP1 but I will tell you now that I will not at any point lie to any players about anything. This means no hidden flavors to roles, no false roles, no dishonesty from me regarding the setup or special game mechanics, and I will not lie in response to any question asked directly to me by a player (though I may choose not to answer some questions)

Signups

This game setup requires exactly 9 players or 10 players. 8 or less will not work, 11 or more will not work. Spots will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis though anyone that wishes to may sign up as a replacement whether or not all slots are filled.

Are the SKs enemies of each other?

That survivors can win when "all living serial killers have met their objective" implies that more than one SK can win.

I doubt they have the same objective. Even if they don't have to kill each other I doubt they can joint win with each other, just the survivors that happen to still be alive when they do whatever they need to do.

My understanding is that the Survivors don't win or lose as a team, you win or lose individually.

Correct. Don't get lynched or shot and you win.

Survivors have no incentive to protect or kill any other survivor unless they pose a threat. I would say that deliberately going after the protective roles and siding with the killing roles puts all survivors in danger.

Smart thing for the doc to do would be to self protect if possible and waive their action if not. They have a 200% larger chance of randomly protecting scum than their teammate at the moment.

That said, I'm sure there is a game breaking combo in here somewhere. If all the survivors sided with one party, then that party autowins.

Well if all the survivors say they side with an SK but don't know who the SKs are then the fact that there are 2 SKs that are enemies of each other complicates that. On the other hand if they say they side with the mafia it doesn't matter to the survivors that you don't know who they are because at least they know who each other are, however that puts you in the sights of two SK guns as opposed to the one mafia gun pointed at you if you claim to be pro-SK.

Add to that the lynches that are likely to kill survivors suspected of being in whatever team the survivors don't all pledge for (in your hypothetical scenario where they all pledge for the same team) and it seems impossible to break the game just yet. We will need to see who dies tonight first.

Town can lynch you on principle?

Only if the survivors let them. Town has less than 30% of the votes needed for a lunch even if they did know who was on their team, which I assume they don't.

Is this a common thing these days? When I was in high school (just graduated six years ago so not that long a time) issuing public school students electronic devices to aid in education was sort of a fringe idea that was just being prototyped by a few districts across the country. Whether this was a good idea was even a very common topic of debate on DDO. I hear students referencing their 'school laptop' more and more often as time goes on though, has the idea caught on more or is it still just a thing a few schools do and I just happen to be hearing from those that have it?

I don't really talk with any highschoolers except via the internet so for all I know my school could have adopted the idea entirely the year after I graduated and I would have no idea lol.

The idea that Seattle would be nuked on the 3rd was an existing meme at the time of this threads creation that many people at least pretended to take seriously. This can be verified by a Google search. I think the idea that Crossed would be one of those who actually took such a thing seriously is not too much of a stretch given his character.

The video that crossed linked in the OP of this thread was a guy saying that Seattle would be nuked on November 3rd of this year. The video was removed from YouTube by the uploader on the morning of the 4th (for obvious reasons) so the only way to verify that what I am saying is true is for crossed to admit it.

If 80% of people in a group are pieces of shit but the rest are not, does that make the group a piece of shit? I guess it depends.

In the case of generational labels I think not since the only thing binding the people together into being in the same group is the fact that they are the same age and being a certain age is not inherently shitty.

On the other hand I am sure there are some genuinely kind and respectable people in ISIS, the KKK, or the Nazi party but I would still call those groups overall piece of shit groups because the thing that binds them together are piece of shit ideals (radical Islam, white supremacy, etc.)

Is it allowed to debate in a non-English language?
-->
@Barney
Maybe there should be a rule against using a different language without your opponents consent? Not something that I ever would have thought of before but now that the idea of using other languages has been brought up the first problem that comes to mind is what to do if someone suddenly just posts a wall of Mandarin at you unexpectedly. Not only a pain for someone that does not speak Mandarin to figure out what is being said but also gives them a character limit advantage over English speakers.

Obviously if both agree to an alternate language in the comments or the debate description as seems to be what the OP of this particular thread intends it should be allowed, as you say it is. Just thinking through some potential future implications.

an ageist remark such as "ok boomer."

Omfg. Boomer is an ageist word now? What about other names of generations like the word millennial or the letter X?

Someone explain to my why the word boomer is ageist but the letter X is not. Sounds like it should be based on this equality of words idea.

The Golden Rule

Treat others as they wish to be treated

That isn't the Golden rule. The Golden rule is "Treat others as you would wish to be treated". That is a big difference.

Your version is morally superior to the original though so I'll let it slide.

Honest Review: Bojack Horseman
-->
@Annie_ESocialBookworm
In the assult case Gina did intentionally choose not to press charges because in her words "I don't want you to be the awkward question I get asked at interviews for the rest of my career." It's possible that PC had a hand in helping Gina reach that conclusion but it was Gina's choice as a fully grown adult either way. If she changes her mind later and decides to press charges PC has nothing to worry about from a legal standpoint.

The drug case with Todd is less clear. Obviously if Dr. Hu came forward and talked about the night that Todd shared drugs with BJ and Sarah Lynn there could be trouble for that but I don't think that just being aware of Bojack using and not doing anything about it is illegal in any way. Covering up BJs involvement in Sara Lynns death might be a different story but I don't think Todd knew anything about that.

In Diane's case the only way for it to come out that she knew about New Mexico is if Ana came forward and revealed that she gave Diane the tape of BJs confession. I don't think this is likely though Ana may have made a copy of the tape and come forward with that against BJ. I don't think there is enough info on the tape to make Diane complicit anyway.

So in PC and Dianes case I think the answer is clear-cut that they are not in any legal trouble. Todd's case depends largely on Dr. Hu coming forward (actually quite likely given his change of heart after Sarah Lynn's death) and him actually remembering about Todd existing on the night he sold drugs to BJ and Sarah Lynn (not as likely in my opinion. Definitely something the writers could gloss over without breaking my suspension of disbelief).

Penny's mom. Last words to Bojack - "If you ever try to contact anyone in my family again I will fucking kill you" (Bojack had since both called a clueless Kyle on the phone and physically visited Penny during his bender with Sara Lynn).

Honest Review: Bojack Horseman
-->
@Annie_ESocialBookworm
1) Do you think everything will come out in the open?

This seems pretty inevitable to me. I think that if the reporters looking into Sara Lynn's death make a big story about Bojacks involvement then that will open the floodgates for everything else. Gina and the therapy horse from rehab would likely be the first to come forward. Whether or not Pete-repeat does as well will depend on how his new friendship with Hollyhock develops and how she reacts to finding out about Bojacks involvement in Pete's story.

 2.How do you think society will react? (cancel culture) Will Bojack be "cancelled?"

A lot of the things that may come out about his past (providing alcohol to minors, involvement in Sara Lynn's death, assult and battery on Gina, etc.) involve some potential for serious prison time so the public reaction may be the least of his worries. I am calling it now. Bojack is going to be publically ridiculed then offered a "for-givie" award, which he will decline because he really is a changed horse.

3) Can and do you think Bojack face jail-time? What would have been his plea - innocent or guilty?

Already touched on this, jail time seems inevitable if everything comes out. I think he would plead guilty.

4) How will the release of all this information affect his relationships with his friends, family (specifically Hollyhock) and the people around him?

I honestly don't know. This is a great question and how the story progresses from here would seem to revolve around the answer to this one question.

5) Will PC, Todd and Diane be implicated in any of the decisions that Bojack made to get him where he is today?

If you mean in a legal sense for all the jail time Bojack might be potentially facing then I don't see how any of these characters could be implicated. If we do get an actual trial in the justice system all are likely to appear as character witnesses.

6) Will Charlotte make a return to carry out her last promise to Bojack?

I doubt she would try to literally kill him but she will definitely be part of the anti-Bojack crowd in the court of public opinion if everything comes out.

7) Will Bojack survive to the end of the season? How do you think he might die, if not - suicide or murder?

He will probably survive. I could see a montage through a few years of prison similar to the rehab montage, then seeing him released on good behavior and retiring from public life (again, after declining the aforementioned for-givie nomination).

8) Will Bojack eventually find romantic love?

Nah, doesn't need it.

Interpreting Tone & the Written Word
As for your other example...

For example, RM assumed that I was using autistic as an insult, because he perceives me to be some menacing force to be contended with that is the alpha of the DDO elite, or some other conspiracy nonsense.

He also assumed that because I have had frank disagreements with Virt on things, that I am intentionally insulting Virt.  That interpretation is a reflection of exactly the problem I was referring above: easily excitable people tend to read meaning into words that is not there, and is not meant to be there; because of their proclivity to interpret what people say in the least charitable way possible.

I do not think this is a fault of text-based communication. Based on past experience I think RMs persecution-complex-like tendency to falsely assume everyone is out to insult or belittle him (or just pretend to make such an assumption in order to troll people, I honestly can't tell) any time such an interpretation is remotely possible is just a personality quirk of his and that having a conversation with him over some non-text based media would garner similar results.

Interpreting Tone & the Written Word
-->
@coal
But what is vocal inflection? Here's a sentence to help you think about the issue:

"I didn't say he kicked his dog."

Try reading that sentence placing emphasis on each single word, and consider how the meaning changes.

Sure just looking at that sentence in isolation many of those interpretations are possible but I am having trouble imagining any possible text-based conversation where this sentence could come up and the inflection/meaning isn't incredibly obvious just by reading the context of the conversation.

We know that someone definitely made a doggy kicking accusation but not who made it?

-- I didn't say he kicked his dog.

We don't know that an accusation was made, just that someone is claiming that one was?

-- I didn't say he kicked his dog.

Etc.

Text-based conversations can in fact sometimes actually be easier because of this ability to re-read portions of the conversation for context on what someone might mean.

Another more direct example for this site in particular would be the quote and reply system. So far there are around five or so people involved in the conversation of this thread. Because of the quote system people instantly know exactly what I am responding to (and again, can re-read it for context at their convenience if needed) as opposed to if I was just joining this conversation after listening in verbally I would have to take a moment to clarify that I was not responding to the last speaker by verbally saying something along the lines of "Let's put aside all this irrelevant talk about autism and get back to the original point for a moment though. Coal, I think you brought up the classic inflection example about accusations of dog kicking right? I would like to respond to that for a moment with my own counter-example." Just to begin to get my point across, whereas since we are having this conversation over text I can accomplish the exact same thing as the above sentence by merely copy-pasting from the OP into a quote box.

The more I think about it (and I have not thought about this topic at all before seeing this thread) the more I think text might actually be a superior form of communication in many cases. Honestly if someone is reading a clearly-written grammatically correct text they have no excuse not to understand exactly what is being communicated.

I think an interesting experiment would be to record a group chat on the Hangouts about a certain semi-complex topic then have that same group have a group conversation in a thread about the same topic and compare the thread with the recording to see which conversation contained more actual misunderstandings.

In answer to the OP, it depends on the vehicle. Having a vehicle totaled simply means that the repair bill exceeds the value of the (repaired) vehicle.

So a $3k vehicle that costs $5k to repair would be considered totaled while a $30k vehicle that costs $10k to repair would not.
