So you non-TN types... How many of you did it right and chose options that you would actually do in those situations and how many of you did it wrong and chose what they considered to be the morally best option?

The Inherent Superiority of Answering "I don't know"
-->
@secularmerlin
Thanks. The practical positive effects of asking questions and seeking the answers is an incredibly simple concept I admit, but sometimes presenting simple concepts in more detailed ways gets people that might at first disagree to actually think about it for themselves rather than just dismissing it out of hand as a knee-jerk reaction. As an example it is often rightly point out that the internet and related technologies would not exist if not for scientists and engineers making an effort to understand, for instance, how electrons work. The knee-jerk reaction (parodied by F4 in post 2 of this thread) is usually to just say "but goddid the 'lectrons" without actually thinking about it the implications of what the former speaker is trying to say. By taking a point and slowing the explanation down I hope to force the reader to think for themselves by not triggering such knee-jerks. The difficult part is in balancing it so that the OP does not become needlessly verbose.

I remember I took this approach a few times on DDO, most notably regarding the anthropic principle (though naturally I did not use that term). Perhaps I will dig through the old DDO archives and repost some of those here.

That is one of the best politician answers I have seen.

I confess that I stole it from a TV show that I watch a lot. One of the characters was running for governor and gave responses like that to questions at a press conference.

Looking at this, you'd say N-G, right? I'd actually argue I'm lawful good. No question on the good, as all 3 top are goods but moving down, my first repeat on lawful vs chaos is lawful instead of a 2nd neutral. And actually, counting just the top 2 it's 3-2-1 of lawful neutral chaotic.

How big were the gaps between your results? I got TN at 87% with my second place being LN at 44%. The rest were all between 36% and 43% except CG and CE which were both in the lower 20's. Much larger gap between 1 and 2 than I expected.

This is indeed a contentious issue which everyone has very strong opinions on. Everyone is taking a side, and I want to make it quite clear that BRT is on the side of the people. he is on your side.

BRT:
What is your campaign slogan?
Our working slogan is "Vote the right side, because we're on your side."

Totally didn't just make that up off the top of my head based on the answer to the last question. Totally had a slogan ready and prepared like a responsible campaign manager. Yup.

This can be orogami will be voting on the best forum poster but is not allowed to vote on the best debater. This can take longer but I think it would be better.

Reform for Unions
If I were to ban unions from donating to political campaigns, I would obviously have to ban it for corporations.

I like this... Not sure the politicians currently having unions and corporations giving them money would like it though and they are the ones that decide so... =/

As for the OP number one and two seem nice to me, though there are some legitimate concerns about number one that others have raised. Number three I don't think I like so much. There is no reason that a company and industry-wide union can't get around the issues you brought up (such as cost-of-living etc.) during contract negotiations.

Reform for Unions

@HistoryBuff
For example, if only half the employees are unionized, then a strike has much less impact on the company. They would be able to continue to operate, albeit in a reduced capacity. This would almost guarantee that companies could beat unions in a labor dispute.

If only half of the workers feel the need to strike then forcing the other half to strike as well seems kinda crappy.

I tend to be pro-union in most cases, depending on the union in question, but nothing is perfect and I am just throwing my two cents in.

A simpler test may be possible. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness is used as a measure of the hardness of a solid substance. Materials are placed on this scale based on what they are able to scratch and what they are scratched by, so for example calcium can scratch talc so rates higher than talc. Diamond can scratch both so rates higher than both. I propose using this simple test to discover for sure which of the two objects in question is less fragile.

In other words we now have a scientifically valid justification for bsh to rub his balls on RMs face and allow us to observe the results. Boring workhorse scientist indeed.

Gotta step in here and say that RM is right about one thing, that is to say that neither bsh's test testicle nor his left testicle or ballsack deserve a place in the hall of fame for this website.

I for one will be nominating bsh's right testicle. There will be those in the left testicle camp that accuse me of "splitting the vote" but I would like to point one thing out... The acronym for Bsh's Left Testicle is BLT... This is also the acronym for Bacon Lettuce and Tomato. The reasons this should be unacceptable should be obvious. Bsh's Right Testicle, however, has the acronym BRT... This acronym has many prestigious uses such as Brain Research Trust and a gene sequencing lab (1)

In short a vote for the left [testicle] is a vote for vulgar food-related memes, a vote for the right [testicle] is a vote for science.

Technological Singularity is Not Inevitable
-->
@zedvictor4
Chance or purpose?

It is not clear what you are asking here.

If one chooses purpose then one would be inclined to answer Yes and No to questions 2 and 3. So under these circumstances, technological singularity would seem to be inevitable.

Again unclear as to what you mean by 'questions 2 and 3'. Are you referring to something from the video or the premises in the OP? The premises in the OP are just a breakdown of claims made by people who claim the singularity is an inevitable result of creating a superhuman AI, all of which must be true for these people to be correct in that conclusion, so you saying that one or more is false but the conslusion is correct would be contradictory. If you are not reffering to the OP please cite what it is that you are referring to.

Technological Singularity is Not Inevitable
Also not necessarily a bad thing.

But most importantly, not inevitable.

For those with interest in the topic but not enough to watch a video over half an hour long, basically the idea that a technological singularity is inevitable is broken down into several sections which are discussed in-depth and a conclusion reached in each case:

Part one: Computers are getting faster
Conclusion: True. This cannot continue forever because physics, but will continue into the foreseeable future.

Part two: The rate of improvement is accelerating (Moores Law holds now and will continue to hold)
Conclusion: Outright false.

Part three: Superhuman AI is possible
Conclusion: We can't be sure but most likely true.

Part four: Superhuman AI is capable of creating a superior version of itself.
Conclusion: Possibly true but far from guaranteed for a number of reasons.

Part five: The design of the second superhuman AI by the first will be faster than the design of the first by us.
Conclusion: Most likely false

Part six: The cycle continues to accelerate. The second AI designs the third faster than it was designed, the design of the fourth even faster still... etc.
Conclusion: Almost certainly false.

The video is not an attempt to prove that a technological singularity is impossible - in fact it most certainly is not impossible - but rather to shatter the common misconception that it is inevitable once a superhuman AI is made and to question the idea that it is necessarily a bad thing. Some interesting philosophical points are brought up in this regard, such as questioning whether a superhuman AI that is secretly malevolent would actually be hostile. There are a number of logical reasons that they might not attempt to harm humanity even if they wished to and were capable of doing so.

Final Season of Bojack
-->
@Vader
Okay so apparently season 6 is going to be the final season. I did not know that before and obviously that has huge implications for previous predictions.

Guess it should not be too much of a surprise given that new show the creators of Bojack Horseman are working on that has been getting so much hype, but honestly I did not connect that with the idea that BJH might have to come to an end.

Other than that I have mixed feelings on the implications that just about every main character is going to be seeing some huge character development. Not just the obvious ones like Bojack in rehab and my favorite character PC having to balance her career life with her newfound personal life, but also MPB potentially coming to terms with his own dysfunctions and possibly meeting Todd's parents.

One one hand character development of this nature - the type that keeps the show feeling like one big story rather than hundreds of episode sized stories - is what seperates good shows from great shows. It is a good thing that they are willing to continue to do this but I am worried that this may be a sign that they were not originally planning on season 6 being the last season and are rushing things a bit to fit everything they wanted in. BJH seasons tend to be longer than other shows and the writters are pretty good with managing parallel plot lines at the episodic level so this worry may be unfounded but is still there.

I normally don't watch trailers and did not even know this one existed until I read your post but I kinda had to because this is such a great show. That and because you asked me to.

You know what my problem is? I can't say no to people. Because I want everyone to like me.

Left-Wing Libertarian? Can it be a thing?
-->
@bsh1
I don't think libertarianism is left- or right-wing. It is it's own thing. I don't see why we should view the political spectrum as linear.

A liberal wants government regulation of the economic sphere, but not of the private sphere.
A conservative wants government regulation of the private sphere, but not of the economic sphere.
A libertarian wants government regulation of neither.
A statist/populist wants government regulation of both.

A vast oversimplification, but essentially correct.

Post 10 of this thread is a good example to directly see this manifest in the way people that do identify as being somewhere along the traditional left-right spectrum perceive those that do not. Despite being technically accurate that post is heavily skewed by perception, and all the worse off for it.

The problem that we are noticing arises in part I think due to the tendency of voters to start out having a political ideology (whatever that ideology is or how they came to it) then begin to ponder upon 'political strategy' for various groups or parties that they recognize as aligning with those ideologies to some degree. This 'pondering of strategy' (for lack of a better term that I can think of) is a significant contributing factor towards the individuals tenancy to gradually identify more with the group than with their ideologies that they started with.

What I have said here is a vast oversimplification too, just the tip of the iceberg for the 'red and blue mentality' phenomenon, but I do think for a number of reasons I won't go into here that this is a bigger contributing factor than many people realize.

Its almost guaranteed you get to have the last word in a conversation before the other person forgets to check the convo. So just exploit that until the person stops tagging you because eventually they realize they're settting themselves up for constant failure/humiliation

Oooh, now that sounds fun.

As for the CoC and shit, it's not outlawed or anything like that so there's not much you can do to legally have them stop doing what theyre doing...

I was more worried about the possibility that I might be violating some rule by seeking conversation with someone that has indicated they do not wish to converse. I'm generally not bothered by anything anyone does on some random website, the only exception being spam. Spam is irksome.

Blocking Someone Then Tagging Them in Posts
Complain - To express dissatisfaction or annoyance with something.

What reason is there to use this word where it clearly does not apply? such as here:

One possible explaination is that the person making the 'you are complaining' accusation does not know what the word means. There is another more likely explaination in this case however:

I never blocked RM and likely never will. There is simply no reason to do so.

Blocking Someone Then Tagging Them in Posts
I have never blocked anyone and doubt I ever will. The only reason I can think of to do so is if someone spams me with notifications - something that has never happened but if it ever did I could just report them for spamming.

I have however been blocked by at least two users. In the first case after I was blocked we proceeded to ignore each other and go about our business until they were eventually perma banned from the site. This seemed to me the mature way of going about things.

The second case started just recently. After being blocked I assumed that this person did not want to hear from me anymore so out of respect for that wish I did not try to talk to them anymore, though I saw no reason to avoid talking to other people on threads that the person that blocked me had created. In one such thread the user that blocked me has attempted to strike up conversation with me several times by tagging me in posts but I have hesitated to respond.

I am worried that it would be rude of me to talk to them if they have blocked me because I thought that blocking meant you did not want to hear from that person. On the other hand I do not want to come off as the petty 'silent treatment' type either. That would be just as childish.

So since I have never encountered a situation like this my question is twofold. First, what is generally considered the proper etiquette for handling a situation where someone blocks you then tries to talk to you? Second, what if anything does the CoC say about communicating with someone that has expressed their disinterest in communication by blocking you?

I wanted the URLs in the first post but didn't feel like editing it later. (and I'm not 100% on how the edit feature works, does edit have a timeout or is it only your threads that you can edit on?)

Just in case this is still an open question for you the answer is that you can edit any post you make any number of times for the first 30 minutes after that post is made. A pencil icon will mark the post that has been edited. It is not possible to tell (afaik) how many times a post has been edited other than that it was done at least once.

Hope that helps.

Edit: I am editing this post so that the pencil mark I mentioned is visible.
