@3RU7AL
Are you aware that violent crime is in a long term down-trend?
And how does that correlate with police funding?
Actually, we have FEWER rights than an "enemy combatant".
Really? Would you rather be in a federal prison or Guantanamo Bay?
Created:

@3RU7AL
Only 4% of police calls are for violent crimes (like assault or robbery).
I wonder how much that number would be without police officers?
Created:

@3RU7AL
Do you understand that soldiers in an ACTIVE WARZONE are held to a higher standard for combatant shootings than domestic police?
Domestic Law is different than Foreign Law. We have Civil Rights and Liberties here.
Hint: Shooting anyone in the back, even if they are carrying a loaded weapon, is a WAR CRIME.
Where’s your source?
Domestic police can act with impunity because of a special law called "QUALIFIED IMMUNITY".
How many cops do you think would be cops without this? Qualified immunity doesn’t stand in the way of clear cut cases like George Floyd does it? And anyways the Supreme Court has found it legal. In Harlow v. Fitzgerald, 457 U.S. 800 (1982), the Supreme Court held that federal government officials are entitled to qualified immunity. The Court reasoned that "the need to protect officials who are required to exercise discretion and the related public interest in encouraging the vigorous exercise of official authority."

@Crocodile
are u saying police brutality is not preventable?they literally train for a couple weeks. If they train for literally years like in other countries, police brutality wouldn't be as much of an issue.don't fucking defund the police tho like wtf is that about.if anything, fund the fucking police and increase their training budget
No matter what you do. Just like killers are going to exist, police brutality is going to exist. The key is getting it as low as possible which it arguably is right now.

Yeah I mean DC and Puerto Rico statehood would pretty much mean a permanent Dem senate majority, or close to it. That's an automatic four seats...and it's obvious they're going to go for it. If the GOP doesn't retain the senate/there are not enough dems like Manchin they've basically won it all for a generation or more.
I tell everyone one thing. Donald Trump is the only thing standing between us and hate speech laws, gun bans, unlimited immigration, unlimited spending, etc.. Even if you hate his guts he’s the final barrier.

I’m praying there are enough Democrats like Joe Manchin who buck the party and vote against eliminating the filibuster. But then again, it was the Democrats who started the idea of canceling filibusters for lower court appointees.

No he said he meant “I” instead of “we”
i meant "I" not "we". i had a typo -Croc
“I” implies he knows who to lynch (I think I have an idea of who to lynch is what the sentence becomes.) He still hasn’t answered who this person is.

basically your argument breaks down to: you want to sue them for daring to have rules on their platform. You don't think that people spreading obvious lies that are killing people should have to have any consequences for them doing so.
If the rules are arbitrary enforced and are biased then yes I should have the right to sue. And no, lying is protected speech. I can lie about whatever I want. But I won’t get banned cause it’s an arbitrary system of enforcement (cherry-picking).
That is how you get people buying up all the supply of hydroxychloroquine (a drug that people with lupus actually need) when it has been proven to not be effective against coronavirus.

I don't think companies should be immune from lawsuit. I have never said that. I said you can't sue a company for libel when they aren't creating the content. It's really very simple.
You can’t sue them for that cause it’s the law lmao. You’re pro-actively supporting a law that prevents people from suing companies which empowers the company and prevents accountability. Unfortunate.

weirdly I'm taking the position that republicans would usually claim they support. That a business has the right to do business how they want. It's their software, they can make the rules to use it as they see fit. Republicans pretend like they believe in stuff like that, but you're all massive hypocrites who will turn on your "principles" as soon as they become inconvenient.
Republicans don’t believe companies should be immune from lawsuit. You do.

It’s funny. The Democrats want to repeal a constitutional amendment that prohibits discrimination and preferential treatment in public employment, public education, and public contracting on account of a person's or group's race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
Seems like they are now against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which was an “act to enforce the constitutional right to vote, to confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States of America to provide injunctive relief against discrimination in public accommodations, to authorize the Attorney General to institute suits to protect constitutional rights in public facilities and public education, to extend the Commission on Civil Rights, to prevent discrimination in federally assisted programs, to establish a Commission on Equal Employment Opportunity, and for other purposes.”
Interesting huh?

@HistoryBuff
why? you sue people for the things they say. Twitter isn't saying it. They are simply filtering out things that break the rules. That is not the same thing as creating content.
You’re saying they’re just like any ordinary company, so they should be open to lawsuit. Unless you consider them special. If I post an Op-Ed on CNN, I can be sued for libel. If I post the exact same thing as a Twitter post I can’t. Does this seem fair to you? CNN is also a private company and they’re liable.
True, but CNN seeks out those op-eds. Twitter doesn't seek out any content creation. They simply allow things to be posted that don't violate the rules.
Not necessarily lol. Anyone can post an Op-Ed with approval from CNN. Can anyone post an Op-Ed on Twitter without fear of it being removed? The same Op-Ed can be sued if on CNN but not Twitter, why?
the content they don't allow has broken their rules and therefore can't be posted on their platform. Those people are free to post it on another platform that is willing to let them post it.
What if I don’t think it broke the rules? I should be able to sue them right? But I can’t. Why do you want Big Tech rich companies from being immune from lawsuits?
no, you have to actually create content. Which twitter doesn't do. I don't know why this is difficult for you.
CNN doesn’t create content. Writers do. CNN regulates whats published. Twitter does the same thing. It’s really not difficult if you weren’t a supporter of banning speech that you oppose.
you have yet to provide a single argument why that is true. They can't be sued for libel because they aren't creating content. So what grounds would you sue them for?
You seem to support the rich big tech billionaires who censor speech. In what world do you think this is good if they don’t even bother banning porn. Which is worse. Porn or Political Speech?
Created:
-->
@HistoryBuff
Twitter has a right to make whatever rules for posting content they want. You do not have a right to control what rules they make. If you don't like their rules, use a different platform.
Then I should be able to sue them.
they set rules for what is and is not permissible on their platform. If you break those rules they can ban you. That is what a platform is.
Then they should be able to be sued.
no, CNN is paying people to write and create content which they then spread. they are liable for that content because they are creating it.
Op-Ed writers generally aren’t paid but their content is still published with approval from CNN. So no.
You are missing the critical difference. CNN either directly pays people to create the content, or they go out looking for the content they want and publish it. They are therefore liable for that content because they are choosing it.
And the content they don’t like they don’t allow.
Twitter is not creating content. They are not paying people to write specific content. They are the platform. That platform has rules to post in it. As long as you obey those rules you can post anything you want. Therefore Twitter is not the content creator, they are just a platform.
You don’t have to pay someone to be a content creator lol. They are actively suppressing content which should open the grounds for lawsuit. Platforms are given legal immunity in return for regulation of obscene content and no censorship of political speech. You can’t be censoring political speech and be immune from lawsuit.

my ideals are for a society that doesn't tolerate sending shock troops to trigger violence for political gain. My ideals are that the government should take care of it's people during a crisis and not sacrifice them to a pandemic in order to allow rich people to go back to making money (and also for political gain).
Feds didn’t start the violence. Feds didn’t create the Coronavirus.
Joe biden being elected is certainly a setback. But you can't stop progress. more progressives are getting elected. Otherwise "safe" establishment dem seats are coming under threat from progressive candidates. Change will come.
No it won’t. Democrats won the House because of moderates not Progressives. Progressives have proven track records of losing competitive races and it will only get harder if more and more progressives primary moderates. The Democratic Party won’t allow it.
spoken as someone who sees the writing on the wall and covers their eyes.

@HistoryBuff
In your opinion. But your opinion doesn't mean anything at all. They are a private corporation and can decide whatever rules they want for posting on their site. If you don't like their rules you are free to go elsewhere.
You disagree with me on this? Twitter should allow obscene content but not political speech?
nope, not even particularly similar. You are comparing CNN writing and posting a story to some random person writing a story and posting it on a platform. They are different.
It’s not a platform if they’re allowing whats posted and what’s not lol. That’s exactly what CNN does.
for what? You keep saying for libel, but that law only applies to the person who wrote/said it. Since twitter isn't writing/saying the things you want to sue them for, then those laws do not apply to them. You can try to sue the person who actually wrote it though.
No it’s doesn’t lol. You sue CNN not the writer lol. Why the hell do you think Nick Sandmann sued CNN and Washington Post and won lol.

At this point I have reluctantly had to change my mind. I strongly dislike Biden. But Trump's complete botching of the Coronavirus pandemic coupled with his attacks on protesters are deeply disturbing. As much as I dislike the idea of Biden being president, Trump being president is much more disturbing.
Funny. Cant vote your ideals just cause someone sucks. How does it make you feel that Progressives will never dominate the party if Joe Biden is elected.
the polls for hillary were off by a few points in a few states. If they are off by the same amount now then trump is getting absolutely crushed. The polls have biden up 10+ points. Hillary was never up by that much and trump only very narrowly managed to eke out a win.
The only poll that matter is November 3rd.
Basically, it is to call out his egregious behavior to his face. He is going to lie and misdirect, and he is very good at it. But you have to call out their horrendous behavior even if you can't force them to stop.
Lmao then you can’t be saying Barr should’ve kept his mouth shut. His behavior was completely fine because of childlike display of Democrats at that hearing.
Created:

@HistoryBuff
this is accurate. The platform puts rules in place for what content is and is not acceptable on their platform. People who obey those rules may post. People who do not get banned.
Only obscene speech is not acceptable. Political content is.
that is nothing like what twitter is doing. CNN is creating that content. They write the story and publish it. They are liable for the things they are writing. Twitter is providing a platform for other people to post things they write. Those people must obey the rules of twitter to post there, but twitter is not creating the content.
No. A writer creates a story and CNN decides whether it should be on their website or not. Another person creates a story and puts it on Twitter but it can get quashed by Twitter lol. It’s the same thing lol
a private company has the right to control their rules. If you don't like those rules use a different platform and stop crying about it.
Then they should be able to be sued just like every other company right?
Created:
-->
@HistoryBuff
if you haven't finished asking your question yet, then they are cutting you off. And if they aren't even bothering to answer the question, then why let them go on lying and distracting?
Why continue allowing them to grandstand and continue putting talking points out there. You disagree with it, why can’t Barr correct the record? In fact he actually did with the next GOP congressman. Democrats just couldn’t listen to it because they didn’t like it. You admit it.
even if the polling was as off as it was in 2016, Biden would still win in a landslide.
But you won’t be voting for Biden, so one less vote him right? As for polling Hillary was winning in Summer 2016 by a lot and Alaska was lean GOP in the end of October per some polling. Don’t worry the poll that matters is on November 3rd. I’ll be voting Trump. You won’t be voting Biden.
No. The point of the hearing was to draw attention to the horrendous things the trump government is doing and to get an official response on record. Nothing bar was going to say was likely to be useful or relevant. But it is still useful to call them out for their tyranny.
That’s antithetical to the definition of a “hearing.” Congressman Can speak all they want on the House floor about the exact same thing. Why do they need to call Barr lol.
Created:

@HistoryBuff
I have never said i am fine with obscene content. Why would you think that?
So tell me why Twitter isn’t banning porn lol
why? They are not creating content. You can't sue someone for saying something that they didn't say.
Censoring someone’s opinion is selectively choosing what content gets out. All the articles at CNN are written by an individual that gets put forth or quashed by the company. This is exactly what Twitter is doing.
that doesn't make sense. There is a very big difference between filtering objectionable content and creating content.
Permitting Porn but not political speech is inherently wrong. A platform’s job is to remove obscene content not political speech
Created:
lol this is a government hearing. There are a myriad of rules around how this works. It is not a forum for free speech. The person being questioned does not have the right to cut off the questioner.
If they’re answering the question they shouldn’t be cut off if you want to play that game.
We have already seen that this is useless. The republicans do not give a shit if someone is guilty. If they are republican or are working for trump then the republicans will protect him. The point of the hearing is partially to grandstand. But also to draw attention to the horrifying things the trump government is doing. This will help to ensure trump is voted out in november.
We both know you aren’t going to be preventing Trump from winning by voting Biden because you said you weren’t. As for grandstanding, thanks for agreeing that the entire hearing was a sham because of the Democrats.
