Debaters can’t both be right - but they can both be wrong. I’ve voted for a handful of debates to be a tie, normally because both sides don’t do enough to move the needle to their side.

i often cast a tie vote in scenarios where I literally could have awarded the debate either way, or the criteria for awarding the victory is almost entirely down to an arbitrary and subjective opinion with interpretating the burden or resolution.

The clue is that the column title and the title of the ratio in profiles is win percentage. Oddly, this strongly implies that the number is the percentage of debates won.

This is not the same as the number of debates you didn’t lose, or a win/loss percentage.

The leaderboard ratio is a win ratio. Not a win/loss ratio. If it’s not a win, it’s not included in that ratio as a win.

yeah - this is exactly why I made the request to re-examine the policy.

Starting in two weeks - I will be hosting a (hopefully) monthly roast.

A roast will be a debate between two individuals where the goal will be to insult a third participant primarily, their opponent secondarily, then any other consenting member after that.

The roast will be a judge debate (so no ELO), and the judge of the roast will be the roastee - Who will decide which person has the best insults.


Anyone can consent to be a roastee - and only consenting roastees may be insulted. If you consent as a roastee - you are also eligible to be selected as a roaster. You may not participate as a roaster unless you agree to be roasted yourself.

The roastee will be selected by popular vote of participants based on the list of participants. Roasters will be determined by Ramshutu with input from partipants.

A minimum level of participation of 4 debates or 200 debates on DART is required to be the subject of a roast debate - but you may participate as a roaster.

To sign up, please post verbatim:

Also - add your preference as to whether you’d be interested in being a roaster participant.

You may post the safety word Chihuahua in this thread or anywhere if the insults or roasts are too much, cross a line - or are substantially more than just an insult. This will be like an emergency brake on a train - but misuse, or use just because you have no sense of humour will cause you to be removed from the roast group. 

You can withdraw consent at any time by posting: “Chihuahua - I remove consent” if you remove consent during a roast - you will be removed as a roastee for 3 months. Or 3 roasts (whichever is longer).

Ramshutu will keep a list of Participants.

i include them in forfeit debates because I’m a vote whore.

I have done it for non forfeit debates in cases where there is a legit tie. I’ve normally written a long RfD as a result, and include for the purposes of feedback and because also I am a vote whore.

If the rules of the debate are unfair, they can be challenged in the debate. If you feel it is unfair that speedrace unfairly excludes you; you can wrap this into a kritik of the debate rules, provided you can show a clear harm in voters accepting the rules as they are - and your opponent isn’t able to invalidate it: I would not penalize you for accepting the debate.

The debate above is where I have done just that, and is an excellent example of the rules being challenged.

If you’re unable to show a clear harm in the rule; then in the words of Mr T, quit yo jibber jabber, fool.

A rule of thumb, is that no matter how unbiased, valid, reasonable or thoughtful an RFD is, you will almost invariably find the person you vote against feels it’s the most outrageous and sadistic violation of their human rights, and you must be a shill/douche/liberal/conservative nut job who is doing it on purpose just to penalize their genius, not because their arguments were worse.

If these users wept and cried and gnashes their teeth at the moderators, and the mods only saw x argument was better”, it’s hard for them to disagree - as their is no objective measure for them to judge your vote on.

The rules are there as an objective thing that a valid analysis of an argument would include: IE the RfD in your head you formed reading the debate would meet the voting standards.

Writing it down will still have you accused of outrageous and sadistic violation of human rights: but if you’ve done everything a good RfD should do, all the mods are able to do judging whether your decision is correct - which is not their job (otherwise why not just have the mod pick winners).

The rules are not setup for you or I, and those who would weigh in legitimately and objectively where necessary. They are there to try and preclude votes going the way of popularity contests or voting canals. It may not necessarily work that way - but it’s as much as can be done without having the mods beginninserting their opinions.

I always find it hilarious when you ask this. He’s writing text. He literally has to watch how he talks to you - it’s right there on the screen.

While I don’t necessarily disagree - that some people can handle a large number of concurrent debates, there does come a point where individuals accept, say, 20 concurrent debates, then end up forfeiting/conceding debates - and which has happened at least twice in the last week. 

I dont think if there was a limit limit for debates you are that is as low as 3 (or maybe 1 for virtuoso!), it’s possible you may either want a higher restriction - or have the ability to limit individual users if their behaviour is disruptive.

I mean, someone accepting every single open challenge debate then it participating would probably be as bad as starting multiple spam debates.

Note - my intent is not to cast aspersions in anyone, or argue they are doing anything wrong or doing something nefarious: just that at the very least it’s easy to get carried away, take on too much, and generally degrade the content - ultimately in a way that is a little detrimental to others experience 

So, we had Type1 creating dozens of debates, then forfeiting.

We had Wrick it Ralph starting and accepting dozens of debates, and has now conceded a bunch.

We have sparrow and Joshua Whatshis name forfeiting accepting and starting multiple debates.

We even had RM who basically hoovered up every debate he could find, and ended up forfeiting the last rounds in a dozen.

Should we consider a limit on concurrent debates - at least temporarily until we have an increased number of participants and debaters - for the purposes of improving content?

And I am somewhat sure that you are sure that I am sure, but you probably shouldn’t be.

I wouldn’t worry too much. To be honest, from DDO onto here, it’s difficult to appreciate and understand the reasons votes are removed, and it’s easy to take it personally and feel like there was some obtuse error committed by moderation. I don’t always 100% agree with everything they’ve decided, but they’re always made in good faith.

Don’t forget there’s plenty of other reasons to hate the mod team :)
