Jesus’s cry on the cross—“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)—does more than express anguish; it recalls the opening line of Psalm 22, which moves from lament to hope in God’s ultimate victory. In quoting this psalm, Jesus shows a profound solidarity with human suffering, illustrating that even in dire desolation, one can still turn to the Father. Psalm22 was written by David in his time of suffering. But unlike Jesus who went onto die on the cross.
David died of natural causes in 970 B.C.E.; he was buried in the City of David in Jerusalem. What King David did was to fight, unite, and rule over a nation that he expanded, enriched, and protected until he gave the crown to Solomon to continue his work.
Jesus was hoping for the same outcome. But Jesus died on the cross.
And instead of inheriting king David’s kingdom as promised.
As the angel Gabriel told Mary: “The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever” (Luke 1:32-33). The coming Messiah is identified as this promised Son of David in the Old Testament prophecies (e.g., Isaiah 9:6-7).
Jesus is a house keeper in heaven preparing rooms for guests.
