The United States is between Canada and Mexico, which are potentially more similar than the majority of first world countries in various respects, though I wouldn't close myself off to considerations in European data.  I believe that North American data is sufficient for comparative analysis in application to policy topics within the United States, and may arguably be preferable to European data.
I think more data is always preferable.

Due to diminishing returns and increasing odds of corruption, that is not reliable advice

@n8nrgmi
you can do the math yourself

i googled that there are 2.5 million assault rifles in circulation. 374 rifle deaths per year. there are 11000 gun homicides. there's a gun for every person in the usa, 340 million.

what's the math say? 374 divided by 11000 is 3.4 percent of deaths are from rifles. 2.5 milliion divided by 340 milliion is less than a percent. so what does this mean? despite rifles being less than a percent of guns, they cause 3.4 percent of deaths. that is, a rifle has a higher percent chance of being used to murder than a non rifle.

i think dred is just getting stuck on the fact that hand guns OVERALL are more likely to be used, but that doesn't mean each hand gun has a higher percent chance of being used for murder than a rifle.

obvious dred is the one who doesn't know what he's talkin g about. and he still hasn't answered the question of why nongun homicides aren't wildly out of whack in the usa, which it would be if we just had a more murderous bad person society as he claims.

Because the political climate can sometimes obscure established terminology you always want to check if Assault Rifle, actually means assault rifle, not "Assault weapon" which could potentially change according to political climate. A rifle variant of an assault weapons legal class is not necessarily an assault rifle.

Over 100 million (approximately one third) of firearms in the United States are rifles.  The boldened portions are certainly in error.  Its possible among other lines of reasoning that the "Assault Rifle" estimate of 2.5 million could actually be the amount of AR-15 rifles estimated during a certain year in recent history, which I can recall claims off the top of my head of between 2-5 million, recently considered the most popular model in America in terms of sales.  Some people believe mistakenly that AR corresponds with assault rifle.  In fact, there are less than 1 million firearms in the United States legally classed as machine guns, and some fraction of those are technically real assault rifles.

sure, and the next worst?

I am uncomfortable to be honest about trying to say what is "worse" in terms of human life.  The Indian massacres of the 1800s come to mind, notably the massacre at Wounded Knee in South Dakota.  Beside the shear scale, these were particularly devastating because of the challenges the survivors had to face.

There are over 100 million handguns in the United States

Assuming a future murder rate of 10 in 100,000 individuals (handguns)

Rounding down to 100 million handguns, at a 5% rate that would be 5 million murders, not including accidents and justifiable cases of homicide.

Assuming an average population of 400 million people

Approximately how long would the guns have to last before reaching a 5% murder rate?

400,000,000/100,000*10=40,000 murders per year (handguns)
5,000,000/40,000=500/4=125 years

In this case, a significant amount of today's firearms are predicted to last in excess of 100 years, and still be in use, and be employed offensively.

i dont know the number but for example there's a ten percent chance an assult rifle will be used to murder, but a five percent chance a handgun will.
This should be verifiable since assault rifles are among the most well documented class of firearms in the US, and handguns are the most well documented class of commonly available firearms.

Virtually every store that I know of carries an "assault weapon" but rarely do they carry an "Assault rifle".  An assault weapon is a political term.  An assault rifle can be switched to automatic fire.

9/11 is the worst that I know of.  The strategy whereby "assault weapons" are designated in small increments as a minority is well known to be advocated by Bill Clinton.  That is why seemingly irrational policies involving cosmetics are utilized.

Do you support a nation with a dominant culture encompassing many ethnic groups?
Okay, if I understand correctly, this is impossible, because there would no longer be ethnic groups.  Essentially you are talking about an ethnostate, but technically the heritage is still there even though its probably irrelevant, a reason being that its not lending to the formation of culture.

I am supportive of a federal government spanning over legally united states and I find multicultural tendencies qualify according to my morals and understanding of the world I live in.  I am not supportive of the formation of ethnostates within the United States, or a most unfortunate event of such ambitions towards the entirety of the American populous.  I am generally supportive of people being able to form and reform government, not closed off at all to people having representation in jurisdiction with their culture, ie changing boarders,  joining the United States or appealing to part ways.

If you intend to keep a firearm for self defense, it has been considered well worth taking a course on this kind of stuff for most people in my experience.  You would want to ask around for a quality learning experience and introductory that provides a good foundation for what you should be looking into and where you may be lacking.  A good one should not be like passing a drivers ed test or something.  You get a solid base of understanding for the things you have to take your own initiative to work on, and this includes your legal liabilities.  As well, I have found that a significant amount of people who have really considered it end up deciding initially that they are not emotionally or otherwise prepared to take on the responsibility upon inquiry and end up exploring other options, and of course you have your spiritual fitness to think about as well.

This seems an inappropriate manner of addressing the educational failures in your country, pandering this nonsense wherever it is coming from.

I wonder if "racism" has some sort of legal leverage amongst the codified means for enabling the enforcement of aristocratic assaults on free thinking which is managing to permeate throughout much of Europe, including the UK.  In my country, people would be preparing for revolt.  Have you noticed any similar concerns mounting around this subject?

I read an article here with my morning coffee and the author was pretty straight up that they wanted this "definition" above to manipulate people, and gave an example of why people should be slandered for not accepting the insult to their intelligence, and apparently the expectation of an inferior education. The terminology obviously can't be agreed upon because people will always reasonably believe it connotates an irrational fear of Islam, which is also not a race.

Yep, for the rare occasion that someone might have to live through an extended fight, people used to (and still do) simply load an extra sidearm before manufacturing  practices improved to the point they are today for magazine fed mechanisms.  I'm not sure that magazine limits would really have a negative impact in civilian life.

In terms of human casualties the evidence is supportive of the idea that people are often not following ethical guidelines.  I think its safe to say that we have some additional "variables" to account in understanding a relationship in what is considered more or less lethal besides the payload.  The amount of energy is not necessarily the same as something that could be quantifiably estimated as "stopping power" (Seizing an act within a given timeframe) which is not yet demonstrated to correlate with lethality in the real world anyway, let alone theorizing a relationship and drawing conclusions.

In reference to target acquisition, I doubt that the average person has the training to gain a significant advantage between a manually actuated design and an automatically actuated design.  In a defensive situation, whatever the person can actually manage to operate proficiently would be preferable.  For some people, this means not having to cycle the action under stress.

In all honesty, Utopia is not attainable by humanity alone.  Such a thing could be a gift that can only be derived from the love of God, not something we deserve in our own right.  If that is not our utmost priority by virtue, than I can wholeheartedly agree that we as a people are backwards and encumber our progress towards a more perfect way of living, and it should be no wonder that people abide by the peculiar notions in vain pursuits, and self righteous glory.

I think your historical generalizations are agreeable, but the sitting president is pro immigration and pro border security, with priority to national security in his jurisdiction of duty over foreign nationals.  The civil war involved a minority of freedom fighters (in the sense of economic exploitation) as well other movements during the tumultuous times, and while I would say it was primed with great significance on differences on how to handle the southern slave population, it was primarily fought through from the perspective of the union cause, and the confederate cause.  I'm unsure of why caucasion, chinks, etc... is mentioned in your reply and what significance that is meant to convey.

The .223 is an intermediate round.  It is soft shooting and economical with a flat trajectory, and the power of a magnum handgun cartridge.  Its a fine choice for a first rifle, though typically a "22" would make more sense if the cheaper ammo is conducive to practice, and its nice to shoot subsonic at shorter ranges.  I have heard people claim from experience that the .222 from which it is conceptually derived is a superior chambering within its limitations.  Less overkill on small varmints with full powder charges, better accuracy (splitting hairs though), longer barrel life.  Neither can be universally recommended for medium game larger than 100 lbs.

@dustryder
The 22 Long Rifle and 22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum are both rimfire cartridges.  Because their primer compound is placed in the hollow rim of the disposable brass casing, which subsequently must be dented (and structurally compromised) by the firing pin to set off the cartridge, rimfire rounds are generally not practical for high power application, and would typically be used in economical applications which a chamber pressure not exceeding 26,000 PSI.  Though perhaps the most powerful cartridge of this variety, the 17 Winchester Super Magnum is still available, exceeding to an estimated 33,000 PSI and capable of over 500 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle, I personally have never seen one.  Noted by Wikipedia, this came about in part because it could be utilized from an existing nailgun cartridge.  Historically, rimfire cartridges were once available in .44 and .32 caliber as well as some others I'm sure.  Because the primer compound which sets off the charge is not placed in a specialized piece which is then loaded into the shell, people who use rimfire cartridges are generally subject to manufacturing tolerances and market availability.  For application in semi-automatic firearms, premium ammunition is particularly desirable.

The most common rimfire cartridges in my region, the 22lr and the 22wmr, are available at almost any ammunition outlet in America, both of which are originally intended for rifles, but often used in handguns.  The 22 Short is the same as a 22lr with a shorter casing, both of these being the most economical of all cartridges in America, and perhaps the last surviving rounds with a heeled bullet design.  The 17HMR is a necked down 22wmr for higher velocity with slightly less energy.

Welcome to Ballistics By The Inch, or 'BBTI' as people have taken to calling it.
Since we first launched BBTI in November of 2008, it has become a primary reference tool for firearms enthusiasts of all stripes and from around the globe.  Our initial research data covered the relationship between barrel length and velocity for some 13 common handgun calibers/cartridges.  In response to the phenomenal popularity of the site, we’ve continued to do testing, and have expanded the data to include an additional 8 handgun calibers/cartridges (and a repeat of the .380 Auto tests with additional ammunition) as well as the .223 rifle cartridge.  We’ve also conducted a major study of the 'cylinder gap effect' on a revolver, involving more than 6,000 rounds fired, as well as a comparison of the performance differences between polygonal and traditionally rifled barrels.  As always, all of our data is freely available, though we happily accept donations (see button below left)and would greatly appreciate your tangible support to help us continue the project.

It is extremely rare that information like that to actually be used for solving a violent crime, to the point where countries with registration systems (not to be confused with tracing) tend to have a hard time justifying the cost of record keeping (absent confiscation).  If an assailant ditches their sidearm, its probably not traceable to a suspect.

It is not that rare for law enforcement to investigate supply networks

I remember some years ago I saw 22 caliber Gatling style gun kits that utilized the parts from two rugar 10/22 rifles if I remember correctly and they costed something over a couple hundred bucks at the time without the rifle parts.  I'm unsure of the NFA status, especially recently since there has been talk in Washington of changing how trigger mechanisms are considered, so you would definitely want to look into what kind of federal paperwork that would entail and of course your State laws will still apply.  That stuff should be pretty easy to look up on the internet. Perhaps the parts can be procured abroad as well?

A pressurized pipe with a sealed breech.  Could be dangerous without critical thought, applicable knowledge, common sense, and testing.  To do it properly somehow you have to figure out how to do the choke.

Rifle barrels are difficult to make though, and even crude ones would be time consuming without an expensive machine shop.

Since none of us dip shit Americans know the rest of the world exist then no foreigner has to worry about us taking their jobs.
False. Its not that USA citizens dont know the rest of humanity exists, its just they could and do, care less about those countries peoples and more so, if those people are not of the same skin color or Christian pr etc....

Totally understandable, to a degree. Best to care for self first and then when have better ability to care about or for others.

USA is primarily wealthy 1st world country, that is backwards in that it has the abilitiy{ wealth an skills } to meet all of its citizens needs but chooses not to do that.

We have a humanity that has the weal th and skills to meet all humanities needs, if their existed the unified agreement to choose to do so.

The United States of America is more of a globalist design of government than most countries.  Although its structure is admittedly less developed perhaps the most analogous situation available would be how you wouldn't expect people to say in terms of social services in this case, that the EU, comprising of 28 (nation) states is failing to meet the needs of Europeans in certain respects unless influential people are rationalizing and making an attempt to consolidate power in the higher level of government.  According to the manner in which the United States is conceived, the federal government and the state government are supposed to be designated in such a manner that they balance each other out in various respects.  The 50 states predominantly handle their social services where as the federal government is comprised by a binding constitution (which provides additional guard to certain rights) and operates predominantly in matters of national security, international policy, and interstate commerce.  If this relationship is not maintained, it would be difficult for a system of government in which the power is justly derived by consent of the people to persist through the challenges faced over successive generations.

Reality = The divide by rich and poor continues to rise. Quick, build more concrete walls [ |||||||||||||| ]  to keep out the poor.

I don't think this can be quantified, yet I feel this statement gets to the real issues people are appealing to remedy within their community when they mistakenly reference some percentage which is not actually indicative of societal well being and economic mobility.

This is not to say that income inequality cannot be an integral aspect of economic insanity in certain respects.  For just one example, we Americans are apparently held liable to money making entities that are considered by many "too big to fail".  This is not something I would allude to as a mutually beneficial relationship between compatriots.

Briefly if you would like, could you please list what constitutes "legitimate use" of firearms?

As for what I personally think is legitimate, a use case such that the use case is unique to the tool and is demonstrably a realistic use case.
Is recreational activity, such as "plinking" and general target shooting, a legitimate use?
Is decoration and art a legitimate use?
Is teaching a minor firearm ethics and safety a legitimate use?
Is historical and educational application a legitimate use?
Is pest control a legitimate use?
Is hunting a legitimate use?
Is Self Defense a legitimate use?
Is Common Defense a legitimate use?
Is training and sport a legitimate use?

What does a realistic use case entail?
