(anticipating the whole thing collapsing including the underground part, i want to be far enough away from the house to avoid falling into any sink hole that might be created but yet I don't want to actually go into the fog. (depending on what we find outside, there are many other house etc that have been abandoned. This is a walled and gated area, perhaps we should secure the perimeter to prevent things from coming in, close the gates, stuff like that)

If we are going to rest here do we want the portcullis back down? While it might keep something out, it will also keep us in should we need to make a hastey escape.
