Lord of the Rings is what made me love the English language.  My 3rd grade teacher read us The Hobbit and I spent the summer reading the trilogy- the first very long books I had ever read.  The first books I read with war and fear of death and sacrifice.   I've never been much a fanboy but I wrote a letter to Tolkien and went to the library to find out his address.  When the librarian advised me he was dead, I cried, and the poor librarian had to comfort me.  I've never been much of fanboy but the Red Book version of The Hobbit and a little statuette of Gollum are two of my most beloved possessions.

To me, that world exists entirely independent of Amazon or Jackson (Dead Alive is still his best work)  or Bakshi.  If any outsiders influence my imagination it is the Brother Hildebrandt.   In much the same way I don't judge a film by the faults of the actors, I separate these LOTR works from my imagination, knowing that no artist's vision could rival that first imprint.

That's a lovely post friend. I envy it.

I love Louis CK.   We are both half Irish Catholics born in DC about a year apart- I can really relate to him.

I think he's the funniest comedian there ever was. But Tommy Tiernan is great fucking fun.

I don't know how you can fine that like an angry girlfriend lol.

You know who knows what it is to be American? Louis CK. Wanking off in everyone else's faces. That's your whole global personality. While being a shitshow socially and politically.

How is it otherwise?

Look, I'm definitely a proud Irishman. Yours is definitely a great nation and maybe there's a bit of begrudgery in it. But you lot are fucking obnoxious lol. The rest of the world isn't feeling your America wank at all.

When you pull your heads out of your arses to make great television and music and art, well, it is that.

Brits spend 51% of their day looking at TVs, pcs, laptops, smartphones all products of American science and culture.  Since 33% of the day is spent sleeping that leaves 16% of each day for other activities.  It is therefore accurate to say the  average Brit spends 3 times as much time being entranced by American cultural artifacts then they do any other activity.

If you are not impressed by the internet, films like Star Wars and the Avenger, TV shows like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, music such as Rock & Roll, Hip-Hop, food like candy, peanut butter, fast food, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, soda pop, hamburgers, fried chicken, tech such as  the transistor, the integrated circuit, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwave ovens, atomic energy, GPS that's fine- we have other interested customers.

I can understand why you get like this, but the whole rest of the world invented a bunch of shit too. Money and wealth concentrated in the states and you lot did some shit with it. Shoulders of giants kinda thing. Nobody's ever going to clap you on the back for being rich.

Your nation isn't mentioned in my country without someone rolling their eyes. There's great people in America. You make fantastic television. It's sometimes hard to reconcile the fact that you make such compelling television with what we see on the news and of your politics. You're not kings of the world.

Game of Thrones
Hangs in the balance sounds about right to me. My feeling of this show is that it understands the cleverness of the original series but can't emulate it. Game of Thrones is sex and explosions and fine chemical compositions making for those explosions. This show gets that. The family is combustible material and okay maybe none more so than the Targaryen family. But what this show lacks is subtlety. e.g.: The dreadlocks guy says one thing about "we are not given, we make" and one letter from his brother and Daemon runs at a whole army on his own. In comparison, Tyrion says something to Theon in Winterfell. Like 3 seasons later, Theon tries to take Winterfell, loses his cock for it, goes through a whole ordeal for it. I mean it's that stuff I loved about GoT. Tyrion, tiny little fellow, walking around saying clever things, lighting fuses in people. George RR Martin spun a dwarf up into a tornado. It was subtle. There was real art in it.

I don't know. I like Viserys' character. I think it's a very forced sort of character. I guess we're jumping across years so it's kinda got to be. But then that just feels like, well, they figured out the explosive properties, slap them on screen, let's see him explode. They didn't do much to work those properties into him. It's art after Game of Thrones but barely. I don't know. Show feels like if GoT had a highlight reel. They might do cool things with it. It's fun characters. We'll see I guess.

It's halfways a children's show. It feels like Stranger Things. But they spent a billion on it and it does reignite a wonder about that whole universe. At the very least, there's going to be fireworks. It's not as bad as everyone is making out.

True Detective - Season 1

@oromagi
Season 2
I actually couldn't watch it. The switch up is far too jarring. Same with Fargo. Loved the first season. Couldn't reinvest after.

That very long super take in Ep4 when the drug deal goes bad has to be one of the most spectacular feats in cinematic history.  Nobody talks about it much but I bet that crew is legendary in Hollywood for that one take alone.
Was exactly that ep I was watching when I made this thread.

I know why this show is awesome but I'm not clever enough to articulate it. It's just the real mud and blood of real human relations. Rust and Marty relate to each other like nothing else I've ever seen on TV.

Predictions for the future of politics and society
The internet has only begun to change the world, but it's not going to end up in some stupid metaverse kind of idea. Instead it's our Tower of Babel. It's the eventual end of all religion prior to this and the beginning of a new religion founded on this new immense outpouring of human soul. I mean it's hard to even describe what it is or the depths in it. It's beyond books. It's beyond radio. It's beyond film. There's soul in all of those, but we could take it as we liked. The internet is like humanity has finally opened its mouth to roar. I swear, I can feel its cosmic background radiation in me now, like we have equalled the big bang.

I think we need religion. I think religion is natural. I think it arises out of the natural isolation, solipsism, pure crushing pressure of all that exists. And it's an attempt to tame the others around us just as much as it is the universe and fate. We will have some organisation around it. We will grow into each other simply by the admission of this shared suffering together. That's always what religion was. It was this need for someone else to be alongside you in this. Well now you can hear humanity roaring it out. The old religions are lost in books. People forgot what took them there. Humanity is roaring at you to look up from your book. And you can throw your US Constitution out too, I think. I mean maybe the science stuff and psychology in that is all a bit complicated, maybe it all takes a self awareness that not everyone possesses, but morality isn't going to be a thing found in dusty old books or slips of parchment anymore. Humanity is going to roar it at you. There were men who sat down to bible and Quran and Constitution presuming to be the voice of God. They weren't. And they cannot compare.

I mean, I don't know. I'm spinning it up nicely. But I fucking feel it, man.

You raise a good point about guns though. In a society with so many guns, obviously the police will have to have a more itchy trigger finger because the first person to draw a gun in a gun fight normally wins the fight.
It's not just cops. Same idea works for gang shootings. Any grievance will end in a shooting because guns allow absolutely no middle ground.

Hell nah. They'll kick you out of the club. And maybe they won't beat the crap out of you if they're feeling nice.

There's way more solidarity between men than you think. At least where it comes to people who actually know you. I've seen it a million times. Women talk a lot of shit and tell a lot of stories and men call bullshit often. I get that maybe there's no mass movements or whatever, but a lot of that shit is nipped in the bud at the very interpersonal level. I guess the problem comes in where it's orgs or colleges or social media or whatever, but you got better friends than you think.

I was in work today for first time in a while and one of the lads asked me about my girlfriend, was I still with her. And I said something dumb like "I'm working on it" with a kind of manner to say I'm trying to break up with her. And he says "It's simple, just break up with her". And I say "The thing about women is...."

And the other lads around just go "Ohhhh Andrew Tate" and all start laughing  and I really do resent the shit out of that lol.

But the thing about women is, they are constantly escalating. It's like they're waiting it for all to be a lie and forcing the issue, escalating and escalating. It's a wonder women don't ask men to marry them.

But then you're  a man and obviously you get carried away in that because a lot of it is lies no matter how well meaning you are. But because women are forcing something so unrealistic. And then how the fuck do you make a clean break. You have to find an angle.

I think that's a fair point.

Virgins, man.

I'm not able to keep up with most women for sexuality. I was in the gym a while back and I was having a tired day and my gym owner this raucous Bulgarian telling me I need to leave these women alone, focus on my fitness. So I defended myself that it was the women wouldn't leave me alone, said women are way hornier than I am. Something like that. But anyway there was this old guy, must have been 65 sitting in the shoulder press machine looking as worse for wear as I was and he looks up and says "25 times hornier" a face of horror on him. The man looked haggard, like he was being rode to death. I don't know. Maybe he'd find energy for it again once he was out from underneath those weights, but it was funny. We're in the fucking wars here.

I think this fellow gets it. Truth's a nice idea that never was. Where one side will say "white fragility" and the other side "white guilt," all that's left is to apply a social cost. So you get "Nazi," "racist," "bigot," "creep" and the rest. It's not like anyone's missing some fact or line of reasoning. "White guilt" addresses it all. School shootings, the lives of those kids are weighed and found not to measure up. You'll be pointed to prospective tyrants, which amounts to unassailable nonsense. It's whackjob doomsday prepper bullshit, rightfully treated as such. We all have our own truths. "Facts" are wielded as blunt objects. It's righteous fire and moral resoluteness that wins the day.

It reminds me of Paradise Lost. Abashed the devil stood and that's about the whole of it. I like to see TWS in hysterics. I hope sadolite thinks himself a piece of shit once he's done cackling over his shitty memes. That's all progress.

It takes a genuine moron to compare gun deaths to deaths by car. There's tragedy and then there's atrocity. Gun deaths are the latter. No human is going to want to dismantle all civilisation and industry in fear of death. We live our lives. What's unacceptable is the wilful taking of that life by another.

Bad guys will always get guns.
This is a spectacularly unimaginative gotcha. There's 50 countries with strict gun laws and pretty much zero gun presence. I think it's a 5 year minimum sentence over here for getting caught with an unlicensed firearm. That will get rid of guns. It's not like the drug trade. First of all, there's serious manufacturing in guns. You're not cooking up AR-15's in a camper van Walter White style. Second, you shoot it once and everyone knows you have it. Where's the market there? The only problem in gun control is taking guns from gun crazy Americans.

Well that's foundational, right? I got problems with individuals owning machine guns. We're not so different after all.

People already do own nuclear bombs. They call themselves members of government. And since one's intentions are beyond the epistemological limit of another, it really makes little to no difference whether one identifies as a "member of government" or "average civilian."
I'm sure you understand the point I'm getting at. Your individualism is fine and dandy if we're all living on our own little islands, but we're not. Nuclear bombs in the hands of members of government comes with vetting and elections and protocols and whatever else. Threat management. That's what it means to live alongside other people.

Can't I get a yes or no answer? Let's see the consistency in your philosophy.

However, if we're going by track record, far more incidences of mass murder has occurred by instruction of governments than the average Joe. And it's not even close.

And average Joe probably definitely still has the bigger body count, right?

I thought all you whack job, Trumpers were pro law enforcement. Oh, except the ones at the Capital. I know gun nuts all have fantasies about rescuing a woman from a motorcycle gang or saving the country from tyranny, but that’s not gonna happen. More likely you’ll get depressed after a divorce or losing your job and you’ll  take your gun and kill a bunch of people, perhaps your boss and some co-workers or you will simply commit suicide. That’s much more likely. Half of all gun deaths each year are suicides - about 24,000.

@Swagnarok
Don't steal. Don't kill. Don't lie. Don't mistreat other people. Rules that humans born and raised in an anarchic vacuum don't typically care much about.

It's nonsense to give these to Christian morality dude. These are the most basic rules of engagement in any civilisation. They'll arise out of anarchy every single time because otherwise we all just kill each other and nobody ever writes a book in the first place.

Sure. But where did society get these values from, given that prehistoric and bronze age societies lacked them? And what's to stop society from changing for the worse?

We get these values from interacting with each other. As to why we won't regress: because we are now hyper aware of each other like we never were before. Because we have structures around law and order. Because nobody wants to be killed or stolen from or lied to. That's not Christian values. That's valuing oneself.

People tend to blow off the sex stuff as unrelated to morality. But how many players sweet-talk a young woman, use her for a night or two of sexual gratification, and then coldly dump her though she has come to love him?
This one gave me a chuckle, not gonna lie. What ya gonna do, man?

Sexual harassment of random women in the streets, to the point where said women might have to fear for their safety? How much underage pornography is floating around on Pornhub?
How much of this could be avoided if Christian ethics were applied to sexuality?

I don't condone any of that and it isn't of any Christian ethics. I live in a city and I got a rowdy sister living close bydoes bar work sometimes. I hate the thought of her walking home after work. I get mad at her often for it. Why do I need Christianity to want to stamp out anyone who'd hurt or abuse her?

All of this despite "more structure and transparency than ever before". Because structure and transparency only matters if people decide that these things are important. If there's no unquestionable religion-level significance ascribed to them, then some generation eventually won't. And if you do ascribe unquestionable religion-level significance to them, then you're quasi-cheating in calling yourself an atheist as you do hold to a secular religion. Perhaps not a religion that includes God but still.
I would say it's down to systemic unfairnesses. Where people feel lied to or stolen from. You guys have a very serious race issue. We have massive wealth inequality the world over. People feel they are living dead end lives, hence drugs. Used to be weed, now everyone here is addicted to antidepressants. Like that doesn't say it all. I mean we got it here too. We have Irish travellers and I've never seen one work an ordinary job in my entire life. They're 1% of our population. And there's nothing stopping them going to college, getting a degree, getting a job. At least that's what some stubborn people will tell you. But I could not imagine being in their position. It would take a superhuman effort for a traveller to amount to anything in polite society. I guess people are angry and people are hopeless.

How do you patch that over with religion? It seems wrong to even suggest that you do.

I mean is the world a better place tomorrow if God comes down and shows us the truth of hell? Yes.

@Swagnarok
This mindset, while it sounds nice, largely disregards history in practice.
The story of our species is a slow progression from brutal savages to mostly restrained modern people. Those who lived 3,000 years ago were just as human as you and I, but they were significantly less likely to "find morality in their own ability to act in this world".
Most people require some kind of structure before they can consistently choose to behave morally. That structure neither magically appears nor magically sustains itself without collective effort from societies.
It doesn't disregard anything. My point is that morality comes from engagement with people around us and as you've written structure affords us more and more consistent. We are put upon by those around us.

So how will ever regress when today we have more structure and transparency than we have ever had before?

You inherited moral traditions from the religious or religious-until-fairly-recent society in which you were born. Let's not pretend otherwise.

I want you to name them. I hold that society i.e. people around you is the civilising force. If you're going around killing people, people are going to put you in the ground. If you do good things for people, people will want to keep you.

So what do we get from Christianity? Sex stuff?

Created:

@thett3
I guess I can appreciate Christianity's control over sex in medieval times. Reminds me of this other idea that religions with strict controls over sex are very likely to pop up in places where there's serious sexually transmitted disease. I didn't write that well, but some correlation map or something. Sounds like Christianity tackled an infanticide pandemic.

Either way, I still don't see a regression happening.

homicide was always at least 10x-20x what it is in modern times and people were likely to get away with it in a lot of cases
I mean this one doesn't surprise me but ideas of medieval women walking down town with full bellies only to throw the kid into the river afterwards.
