The source of all evil is religion.
So since music preceded religion, was music not thought of as scary until religion?
If the source of all evil is religion, what does that say about the human apparent love and attraction for religion?
Are non-religious societies less evil than religious ones?

Good point. But I wonder, do we associate all unpleasantness with evil? Are ugly people thought of as eerie? Evil? Do tummy aches make us feel like something wicked this way comes?
Also, not all "scary" music is discordant. Some of it is quite nice, and a few bands have made a living from it.
Though that answer has some truth, I can't help but feel it misses something.

This is an excellent point which should be considered when we begin the HoF.
Walk on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today and you invariably ask, "who the hell was that?" Every one hit wonder and his dog seems to be on there.

@Smithereens
But why would we perceive it as "evil" instead of just discordant?
From whence comes the willies? The heebie-jeebies? The goosebumps?
How would one use music alone to incite violence?

Nope he only asked how /when, like any other mere mortal would.
Lie. He also said his wife was past the age of childbearing. You do not know what menopause is. Look it up, but there is no need to lie.
god doesn’t punish anyone, does he?
I never said this. Please stop lying.
Here look, show us all where is anyone struckdumb or even punished.
So what? God is not a machine and does not have to do the same thing each time. Zack did not need to say anything out loud. God could read his heart. God's judgment was that he would be dumb till the birth of the baby. His judgement did not need to satisfy you or pass your standard.
Do you actually believe that this man who walked "IN ALL the commandments and ordinances of his god" would have ignored his gods earlier example of bringing forth babies from "old and barren " women ?
Sure. You do similar. You say Zach worked in the "Holiest place on earth." What made it holy? God made it holy, yet here you are, ignorantly rejecting the judgement of the very God you are claiming is holy. You accept the verses that say he was a righteous man, but reject the verses saying he was struck dumb.
If you are dumb enough to cherry pick the bible, I have no quarrel with you. I have zero interest in debating illogical people. Instead of debate, I'll just toss you for lolz.
Here read for yourself and show us all here how this non punishment story compares to the extreme punishment of Zacharias who did nothing wrong.
Neither is a "punishment" story einstein. They are similar in that God made a promise of a son to a couple where the woman was past childbearing age. The details of the story do not need to be the same. It is a different story, at a different time, with different people. Think man.
You are pretty good at name calling and throwing accusations of ignorance around the place,
Sorry sir, but I don't do it just to insult you. It is obvious that you are poor at logic and ignorant. These are facts, not insults. The fact that you could not address what the phrase, "well stricken in years" means, shows your ignorance. You hounded MoPac for not answering your questions, but here you are dodging questions. Is that not hypocritical?
....asking us all to simply accept that this so called god has supernatural mind reading powers.
Lol. If you don't accept the Christian definition of God, your entire argument become nonsense. You aren't talking about the Christian God, as such, I couldn't care less about what you think.
Either you accept the bible's account, or you don't. But I will not cherry-pick with you. God is omniscient. If you don't think God is, then your questions and expectations are idiocy.
"Whereby shall I know this?"So in the case of Zacharias this means - I believe you by which method and when?
Untrue. It means by what means shall I know this is true? And as we can see from God's response, your interpretation is nonsense.
You should be looking at Abraham's first born by his Egyptian slave.
I don't care for your non-biblical rantings. Every false prophet like you has an...
...but I believe Ishmael is key and ‘fits’ more closely to the baptist story and than people like you care to realise.
....that he places as higher truth than scripture. What you believe carries no authority. And when what you believe contradicts the bible, I will throw it out wholesale.
Thanks for your time.

We all know that music alone can make us feel a certain way. That most of us associate certain key sequences as eerie or weird. The horror movie industry works on this truth.
In tests done all over the world to different cultures, "scary" music seems to be scary universally. There is something in the music, overriding culture, that prompts feelings of "wrongness" or "evilness".
So my question to you is, can music itself be evil? Are certain note structures wrong in and of themselves?
If your answer is no, then why do we see some music as weird or evil?
And why does this view seem to be consistent across cultures and ethnicities?

No sir. As I understand the setup, it falls on you. Mike can amend or veto a decision of yours, but until he does, the buck stops with you.Ultimately, it falls to Mike to make the call.
I don't think Mike wants to actively mod, and I doubt he wants members running to him every few minutes to review some decision of his mods. Who would want that?
For all effective purposes, you are it. You have legally been given authority, you do no wrong in exercising it.

You right. But you surprise us in that it seems you don't know willows. He would keep posting to his own threads, bumping them back up the line. A quarter of his threads dying without a single response.
And 26 in six hours is only what I counted, he topped that in later hours. Mike was 100% right to ban him, and if bsh1 would not have banned him, then Mike will know his choice of mod was a mistake. Given willows recent comments on DDO, it is obvious that Mike's decision was correct.
We are making this a bigger problem than it is. Guys who behave like willows, bully(Lunatic), or hari are rare, 99% of the time all it takes a a warning from a mod. The problem on DDO was that no mod did anything, not a single thing. So the 1% of toxic trolls seemed like 10%, and enabled and encouraged others to become toxic, either in self-defense or sense of revenge.
It is an interesting idea, but indulging or condoning such toxic behavior anywhere on the site will be a mistake.

Where does Zacharias once call this messenger a liar?
"God can read hearts genius. Plus Zacharias said, "I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years." If you weren't ignorant, you would know that women cannot get pregnant after a certain age, and Zacharias was doubting that what the angel said could be true".
No, Not once did Zacharias doubt anything and you cannot show me where he did.
I just did Jethro. Do you know what "well stricken in years" mean? You don't do you? How do you propose to critique the bible when you are ignorant of simple language and history?
And stop calling me ignorant just because I don't agree and go along with your beliefs and fantasies.
You are ignorant because you know nothing of what you speak about, and refuse an education.
The whole story surrounding the Baptist is as strange and puzzling one from start to finish.
"Because you are ignorant of Hebrew history and female biology. Most of the world is puzzling to the ignorant".
Now your talking sense.. in part. The gospel writer here has indeed re-hashed an Old Testament story, something they do often.
Right, because things never happen more than once in the world. An old woman getting pregnant could have happened only once or else it a re-hashing.
So why was this old devout priest Zacharias "struck dumb"
He asked for proof that indicated the story was true. He got it. He should have known the story of Abraham and Sarah and kept his mouth shut.
Again not true and the story is there to read for those who want to bother to read it. He didn't ask for proof of anything and you cannot show me where he did....
He asked, "Whereby shall I know this?" Do you know what his question meant? No?
his poor old aged and barren wife forced to "hide herself away"?
Because no one would believe she was pregnant at that age and would assume disease and become concerned and alarmed. Think man.
Again spouting anything that comes to mind without a single piece of evidence.
Lol. Read the story genius. Don't just take the atheist website's word for it. Bibles are free.

I am questioning the chronological order of Marks version of events.
I know. But you are doing so because you have somehow refused to see that Mark is talking about a past event.
You submit "past tense" to Marks unfathomable version.
Mark uses the word "beheaded" and you say I am "submitting" past tense? Are you trying to be silly? It IS past tense. How do you speak of past events?
So tell me why would Mark need to speak in a past tense?
Because everyone but liars and the insane speak of the past in past tense. For example, if I was to tell you about my childhood, I might say, "I lovED chess as a child." See the ed on "loved"? That means its past tense. I may no longer love chess now. I am describing an action already completed in the past.
Really. Do I need to explain this to you? Mark may be "unfathomable" to you, but I have never met anyone in my life who was confused about this simple passage. Your reading comprehension issues may be due to some underlying learning disabilities like dyslexia, or dysgraphia.
Are you aware of any learning issues you have?

People keep missing the point.
I don't care about personal insults. What do I care if some idiot I don't know calls me stupid?
What worries me is behavior that gunk up the works of a smoothly functioning board.
1. Responding to every post the same way. Think of BornofGod or hari. Soon their posts become like stones in a river and the conversation simply flows around them. But noobs keep getting drawn in and that disrupts threads. The board is for debate, not obsessive agendas.
2. Responding to every "type" with insult. Maybe they hate religion, or blacks, or women, or democrats, every post they make to such a person, as soon as he becomes aware of the type, becomes unwarranted insults to that person. Its isn't quite fair, say to a female, to respond, don't be so sensitive, when I'm a guy and usually free from such prejudice. No minority deserves to need thicker skins than majorities.
3. Spamming your obsession. Like posting multiple threads only meant to insult or shout your obsession. 26 threads on some variation of, "Are Liberals Stupid?" In 6 hours is spam that clogs up the board. Thread titles are not to be manifestos. Debate your obsession, not club people with them.
But everyone seems to go straight to name-calling. That is usually minor stuff. I've been called everything in the book. Never bothered me, as long as we can still debate.
So I have no issue with your idea. But if you do it, and some bozo begins spamming that thread at 50 flame threads a minute, or attacking any physically handicapped person who posts there with physically challenged specific insults, no one can go running to the mods.
But the moment it spills over into the main forum, I will have a huge problem with it. And I'm almost certain it will.

The only thing youhave shown is that you don't know what past tense means in language. If Herod says, "whom I have beheaded", that means he has already beheaded him.I know,
If you know John had already been beheaded, are you lying when you claim John was still alive? I prefer to believe you are just confused.
here read for yourself MARKS gospel>>>Mark 6:16 But when Herodheard thereof, he said, It isJohn, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
Yes, see the word "beheaded"? Means this is AFTER John's beheading. Think a little.
And it also means that MARKS gospel has him saying this before his birthday and the request of Salome his step daughter.
Untrue. This is after. Really, read more slowly.
There is no17 in Mark gospel,
There is a difference between verses and chapters. You cited chapter 6. The verse I cited was verse 17 of chapter 6. Where you stumble.
and I am only concerned with Marks gospel. You insisted Ihad Mark and Matthew confused.
You did and still do.
I am not confused. This is about Marks sequence of events, stop trying to weasle and worm your way out of the glaring anomaly in MARKS gospel as there are in ALL of the four gosples.. out of it.
I can't help if you insist on being obtuse. Mark is talking about a past event. That is why he speaks in the past tense. I am not responsible for your ignorance.
If I was really being sarcastic and "obtuse" I could have asked - how many friggin heads did John the Baptist actually have?
You could have, and that would have been just as stupid with you not understanding that past tense means already happened.
John was dead Einstein,Indeed and Mark says so and has JOHN DEAD BEFORE Herod’s birthday bash.
No he doesn't Einstein. You just assumed so because in your confusion, you thought the past tense meant present. Confusion is not your friend.
I will continue tobelieve the Bible thank you.I don’t doubt that for a second.
Thank you. Believing the bible over the many crackpots roaming the net has become second nature for me.
According you you, Jesus= lord of lords = Jesus is god =Jesus is god of gods
Please don't lie. "God of gods" is your clunker, not mine. Lying, like obtusness, is not good argumentation.
although you say there is only one god.
There is only one God. That is why you need to lie. More importantly, the bible says there is only one God.
I know my tenses Stephen. I know that "beheaded" means before right now. Don't worry though. Your confusion hinders only you.The confusion is all yours, ethang5

@Stephen
That is how normal speech is.Why do that?
It didn't need to use "past tense" at all.
It did if the event is in the past. And it was. That you were too.... confused to see that is your fault. Normal language has past, present, and future tenses to indicate the time of the event being mentioned. Learn.
Your problem is that I have shown you a glaring anomaly and contradiction in Mark.
The only thing you have shown is that you don't know what past tense means in language. If Herod says, "whom I have beheaded", that means he has already beheaded him. Learn.
THERE IS NO MARK 17!!!!!!!!
Calm down. We were in Mark 16. And there is a Math 16.17. Read slowly. It will help your poor comprehension.
You are correct, I am not dumb.
Then you are being deliberately obtuse, something smart people do not do deliberately.
Why would Mark talk of a haunting well before John was dead.
John was dead Einstein, that is why Herod spoke in the past tense. Slow down and think a little. I promise it won't hurt you.
the sequence is backwards and inside out with absolutely no reason for it to be.
The only thing backwards is your reading comprehension. We have tenses in language so that we can talk about past or future events in the present. Verse 17 says, ""For Herod himself HAD SENT forth and LAID hold upon John and BOUND him in prison..." That is why Herod thought it might be a risen John, because he had already beheadED John. Maybe English is a second language for you?
I simply do not accept your excuse
There was no excuse. Tenses are normal, common, and correct to sensible people. Your calling it an excuse makes us doubt your claim of not being dumb.
for the great anomaly in Mark's gospel
There is no anamaly. You are confused and probably poorly educated. Speaking of a past event is not anamaly. It is normal usage.
concerning Herod and the beheading of the Baptist. And you should accept that Marks version of events simply cannot be true.
Marks version is true. That Mark starts talking about a past event using past tense confuses you, is your own poor reading comprehension. No one to blame but you.
I will continue to believe the Bible thank you. At least Mark knows that when past tenses are used, the events are in the past. You are free to believe whatever nonsense you like. Being deluded is not yet a crime.

Stephen,
I will simply refuse to believe you could be this dumb. As such I must conclude that you either suffer from very poor reading comprehension, or you indeed are a troll using obtuseness as a trolling tool. Either way, I will help you.
In verse 16, John is already dead. That is why Herod says, "....whom I beheaded..." Past tense.
Now watch this, for this is where your ignorance kicks in.
Verse 17 then goes into the past, saying, "For Herod himself HAD SENT forth and LAID hold upon John and BOUND him in prison..."
Going into a "flashback" to explain why Herod was saying what he had. Do you understand what past tense is? So Herod thought it might be John come to life because he had already killed John. John was not alive in a cell, the Bible was going into the past, which is why it used the past tense through out.
Seriously, being obtuse is not an intelligent debate choice.
And obviously, no one has said "God of gods" except you. There is only one God. The phrase "Lord of Lords" does not contradict that there is only one God. The bible says God is one. So if you think "Lord of Lords" means "God of Gods", that is just your poor thinking, not my comment, and not the Bible's statement.
Work on your reading comprehension. Stop listening to whatever silly atheist website you're allowing to mislead you. And until you gain more knowledge, lose the militancy. Ignorance and militancy are an unfortunate mismatch.
Be well.

Do you think that Americans should give no money to any foreign entities for charity, trade or any other reason until the needs of Americans are met"?
I win on the real question.
Your complaint was that they drain the economy when I said that they boost it.
Untrue. My complaint was that they should not be here at all. Anything after their illegality is moot.
Besides the cognitive dissonance displayed in those two statements,...
The only dissonance is from you trying to conflate taxation and socialism. And I am the one complaining that our tax dollars are being given to foreigners. It shouldn't be as long as there remain Americans in need.
Do you think Americans would be willing to make those sacrifices to be "America First and Only"?
You added in "and only". Why? America is making sacrifices now. So yes, I think Americans would be willing to do so.
And giving to foreigners via trade, made your lifestyle possible today Bro

Moving them to where? If we took a vote, the overwhelming majority of Americans would be for helping Americans first. Now your moving the goalpost bro America isnt spending money on things people dont want, thats what elections are for.
It is your Right to spend your money as you see fit, but that doesnt mean that you aren't wasting it by spending it in illogical ways
If the owner is spending it how he sees fit, it matters only that its logical to him. No one else can tell him how to spend his earnings.
Undocumented immigrants contribute significantly to state and local taxes,...
They are called illegal for a reason. They should not be here.
And they commit less crime than native born citizens
So what? They are illegally here. A single crime is too much. Don't tell me a person who broke into my house causes less trouble than my kid. The trespasser should not be in my house at all. Any trouble he causes is trouble I didn't need.
It's completely relevant if your premise is that America has achieved it's greatness off of the merits you listed previously while ignoring that we have also profited off of exploitation of many foreign Nations which you choose to ignore.
You seem to be one of those liberals who thinks America owes something to some other countries. Bolderdash. America owes them nothing. It is not relevant. Our money is our money, and it should be used on us first.
Do you pay taxes?
Yes I do. To an American government to be used for the betterment of Americans, not foreigners. Taxation isn't socialism.
That makes no sense Bro. We don't import to help Non-Americans
We import because our past useless governments thought sacrificing American jobs to placate foreigners was a sound policy. america can be self sufficient. It makes perfect sense.
So your against trade also?
How is trade supposed to be giving money away. We pay for the things we get from trading, it isn't that our trade partners are entitled to our money. America has no obligation to take in, house, or support anyone but Americans. Anything else is charity, not obligation.
homelessness in America, It has nothing to do with what we are talking about
Many of the homeless are either illegals, or have been dragged down by illegals sucking the life out of their communities.
homelessness is caused by things outside of immigration
Untrue. Many illegals squat in huge homeless slums, spreading poverty and disease. Homelessness and illegal immigration are intricately linked.
One thing I agree with Trump on is bringing more jobs back to America as to that would help the homelessness problem
He's right on more than just that, as our economy is indicating.
Fixing the homeless situation has never been a priority in America
True, because the money to fix the problem has always been given to foreigners instead of Americans. Trump is going to take a look at that too.

It has everything to do with ownership. People who do not own my money cannot charge me with waste of my money. It is my right to spend it as I think is fit. The same applies to America. If America owns the money, they have the perfect right to spend it as they wish.Misopropitation has nothing to do with ownership, it has to do with misuse/waste
Waste would be spending it on things the people don't want.
Give to non-citizens? who are you talking about specifically? Foreign Aid? Illegals?
Any non-citizen.
Illegals pay taxes and boost the economy (which helps Americans)
Illegals should not be here in the first place. And talk about rose colored glasses! They are an overall drain on the economy through crime and social services.
....it's an incomplete representation of our history without mentioning that we have been at War for 222 outta the last 239 years
How is this relevant to our subject? Our money is for Americans. It should be used on Americans.
To mention socialism is a red herring and straw man not to mention a false dichotomy because I never mentioned it nor is it the only answer.
Any system where you pretend the earnings of profitable people are the property of everyone is socialism. Call it whatever you want. A rose by another name is still a rose.
Dont forget that when you mention "America First" that America imports much more than we export.
If the government used Americans money on Americans first, we wouldn't need so many imports. Sorry, but I fail to see how using the people's money on the people is wrong.
An altruistic approach to foreigners is not helpful to Americans at all neither morally or spiritually imo
I think you meant selfish, not altruistic. But altruism is not giving the people's money to things not intent ended by the people. Foreigners are not entitled to the money Americans own. Only Americans are.

What you are talking about is a misappropration of our funds bro.
I don't see how. Those funds are owned by the American people. It cannot be wrong to give it to them.
Little girls die in our hospitals because of ridiculous privatized healthcare costs, not because money is given to foreigners.
I did not say little girls die because money is given to foreigners. I said any money the country has should first be used to save its citizens, instead of being given to foreigners.
We have sports athletes and entertainers making 10's (100's) of millions of dollars a year..... so the money is there.
That money is made by them and owned by them. I do not think taking money from people who have legally made it to give to others who have not, is fairness or freedom. If the government has money to give to non-citizens, then the money is there. I say we use it first on Americans.
And remember that if you want everyone to keep their own money, then America would not be the Leaders of the World we are today.
Untrue. America is great because it never went down the socialist route. Americans had incentive to push, innovate, excel. No socialist country has ever succeeded. A conerstone of our culture is that you get to keep what you earn. (Less a little tax)
America would drown without the help (exploitation) of Mexico, the African Continent/ Middle East and Asia.Cant have it both ways

Max did not do that. And I can bring you threads where he shirked his duty. You seem to think your job is to please people. It isn't. If you uphold the CoC, Mike will not allow anyone to touch you.
But you cannot meddle when no code of conduct has been broken, and cannot be "hands off" when the CoC has been violated. Otherwise, we don't need a CoC and you can just call them as you feel, like Max did.
I vote for the CoC, not Max's vapor moderation.

Well, that is a different question than the one you first asked. No one is recorded as calling Jesus Lord of Lords to His face. But Jesus is called God to His face. I suspect Jesus waited for His mission to be completed and all things placed under Him to assume the title, Lord of Lords.I don't doubt he is "referred" to as lord of lords by many christians, but who is it in the New Testament that actually addresses Jesus directly as "lord of lords".
Again , I notice, if this a reference to Jesus, it doesn't even mention that he is also a god or a god of gods.
Then I don't know what you're asking because it seems to change. Are you asking if Jesus is God? The answer is yes. Bible authors call Him God. The Holy Spirit calls Him God, He is called God to His face, and He takes on the singular traits of God.
If you only want to know if Jesus is called Lord of Lords to His face while He was physically here on Earth, then the bible does not record that event. If you are trying to find something else, I don't know what it could be.
Jesus is God, as such He is superior to everything and everyone, whether the bible specifically says so or not.

You are confused. The different gospel books are writing about the same story, not citing a new story.
What do you think when a movie does a flashback? Do you become confused that the character is young again? I refuse to believe you can be that dumb. You must be one of those willows-like atheists who think being obtuse is good argumentation.
...but we read nothing in the gospels at all about any miracles i.e. "mighty works" performed by John
So what? The bible did not record everything. Could you be so clueless as to think, "if it isn't recorded, it didn't happen?
We are not told before this point in the bible anywhere that John is dead or how he died
Of course we are. In another gospel. How old are you? The gospels tell the same story but from the POV of each writer. You are hilariously confused.
Funnier still, you think all your betters missed this little tidbit till you came along in your intelligence and spotted it. Hilarious.

It isn't young Christians leaving the church (whatever church that is) it is young people leaving.
And Christians know why, first because we have seen the young people with the corrupt morality of pleasure. That is, "Whatever I personally find pleasurable is moral, and whatever I don't personally like is immoral.
They "leave" whatever they think blocks their pleasure. They are leaving marriage, school, childbirth, politics, and religion.
Second, Jesus told us 2,000 years ago that they would begin to leave, and He told us why they would begin to leave. For those people who interpret this as people getting "smarter", one look at the educational condition of young people leaving our schools today will show how wrong they are.
But the actual number of Christians in the world is growing, not declining.

Jesus is referred to as the Lord of Lords. As in, the Lord to whom other Lords bow.
The phrase means, whatever name you wish to call Jesus, He is above all principalities and powers, and subject to none.

No. It is symbolism of being buried with Jesus and sharing with His death on the cross, thus being resurrected with Him as He rose from death. Is baptism a ritual of cleansing of one's sins?
If God and Jesus are the same,....
The same what? You are confused. The Father is God. Jesus is God. The Holy Spirit is God. But Jesus is not the Father, though both of them are God. Your question then is illogical.
John the Baptist died twice, how did that happen?
John the Baptist did not die twice.
Why didn't Jesus resurrect his cousin John the Baptist as he is said to have done so with his friend Lazarus?
The bible doesn't say.
And he failed as a messiah in my opinion....
So what? You disagree with Bible authors and God's prophets. Thanks for telling us your opinion, but how does it matter to the truth?
I am claiming the OT was lifted from the Mesopotamian Epics...
Anyone can claim anything. My experience shows that people making this claim see similarity in some stories and then simply assume the later story is lifted from the earlier. Similarity and chronology are not enough to assume they were lifted.
Your claim is not true just because you believe it. And we will not accept it as true just because you assert it without support.
Jesus is called God in both the OT and NT, using the actual word God. Jesus is called God to His face. One may refuse to believe that Jesus is God, but one cannot deny that the Bible calls Jesus God.
So the question becomes, "Is the bible correct?"

Attention, any kind will do. He's all soft and jokey until you burn him good, and then the hard, mean anti-theist comes out, letting you know that the dumbledore is just an act.
Want to blow his mind, tell him you asked to join a religious group, and he will almost go apoplectic. Why, I don't know, and apparently neither does he, but its fascinating to watch.

As I said, it isn't an either or.
Plus, I was there, so I'm more worried about what did happen than what could have happened.
The bottom line is that Mike apparently wants bsh1 to benchwarm the mod seat. I'm sure neither Mike or bsh1 will lose sleep if I left. It would have been better if we had a mod who believes in actually modding.
But I'm done. Everyone will play their role. No hard feelings except for the trolls.
