Why is there a need for any ritual? Have you ever attended a graduation? A baptism? A wedding? A naturalization? A funeral?
Why should I have to sit here and answer a silly question who's answer you know? When you yourself take part in rituals but pretend obtuseness only when the ritual happens to be religious?
Now, if you weren't quite so irritable you would be on "board" and make a pertinent case for these practices.
Why should I have to "make a case" to you? Who are you? Why should I care what you think of the rituals of my faith? And why should I have to do so to a person who clearly understands rituals when it fits his atheist worldview?

Answer this question for me.
It's 1690, a black slave and his slave wife who has just given birth, are about to bed down on the haystack in the horses shed.
The wife tells her husband, "Go sleep on the floor. I'm afraid you'll smother the baby if you sleep on the hay with it."
The bemused slave shakes his head and goes to sleep on the floor beside the horses muttering, "I swear, this woman treats me like a slave!"
A trio of white farmhands happen to hear him say this, and find it hilarious, getting the humor of a slave grumbling about being treated like a slave.
Now switch the scenario. Say it's the white master's wife telling him that he cannot sleep with her and the newborn child in the king size master bed, but must be satisfied with sleeping in one of the guest rooms.
And a trio of house slaves overhear the bemused Master say, "I swear, this woman treats me like a slave!"
Do you think its as funny as when the slave said it? Do you think it means the same thing? Do you think the trio of slaves will find the master's comment as funny as the trio of farmhands found the slave's comment? Why not?
Anyone can say anything they want, but because of history and reality, it's sometimes stupid and insensitive for some people to say some things.

No one has gotten my approach yet.
Consider this.
The first time a person smokes, it is an unpleasant experience. The body rejects smoke into the lungs, and one coughs and hacks. Yet, millions did it again and again, enduring the unpleasantness till their bodies were acclimated and addicted to the nicotine.
Why did they do that? It wasn't (at first) for any "high". What powered them was their desire to be cool, to fit in, to please others.
These are people with a fundamental flaw. With a broken esteem system. They feel incomplete. They think they lack something. They are searching for something that makes them feel alive, or something that drowns out the life.
The problem in America is not drugs, but so many people who think they want/need them.
It's even more curious that the populations with the highest standard of living, and the most creature comforts, claim to be the most in pain. Even sub Saharan Africa has fewer suicides than the so called rich countries. Why is that?
Its hard to see the craziness of a culture from the inside, so most replies to this post will only defend the "need" for drugs, never questioning why so many 13 year olds are sniffing glue.
I watched a Palestinian ceremony once where parents of those "martyred" were "appreciated". The occasion was replete with big pictures of each "hero" hung from the rafters, 6 year old boys marching with wooden rifles preparing to themselves be martyred, and adoring fans giving flowers to the proud mothers of the glorified.
Do you think if I told anyone at that gathering that the whole thing was stupidity, they would see it that way? If I said they were glorifying terror and indoctrinating kids into a cult of death, would they understand my meaning? No.
It's the same thing here. Emersed in the culture, most people are unable to raise their heads above the trees. Tell the typical American youth about the insaness of the drug culture and he won't have a clue what you're talking about.
Drugs should not be a problem at all. No one should be taking drugs for fun. That people still are, has nothing to do with drugs. It's culture, and until we address the dumb things in our culture, drugs, (or something else) will plague us.

I bet you, no current billionaire shot for a billion dollars. He shot high and got a billion. Now, if government takes a billion off the table, fewer people will aim high. Fewer people will keep working after 900 million. The economy will contract.
What do democrats do when the economy contracts? They tax the rich and increase services to the poor. Which in turn contracts the economy even more. See the cycle?
This isn't conjecture. The process has been played out in many countries over history. Anyone who thinks democrats would stop at a billion dollars don't know history or human nature.
Today, we have no Trillionaires, so a billion seems a good place to put the limit. So when we have no more billionaires, where do you think the "right" place will be for liberal democrats looking for more money, having squandered all the taxes on illegal immigrants and abortions on demand? Right, at a million.
Some of the countries they praise as wonderful take as much as 65% of all the earnings of its populace in taxes!
They see no need to limit how poor a person can get, just keep throwing someone else's money at him, but at the other end, limit how rich a person can get, and take his own money!

The economy is great. They say Obama started it and forget they predicted a crash with Trump.
The Mueller report finds no collusion, they simply move to the next deranged thing and forget that for 2 years they said they already had proof of collusion.
Trade is going great. They will forget that they predicted that the USA would be the laughingstock of the world.
NATO countries have ponied up, Canada and Mexico have signed contracts, England is seeking one, and North Korea has settled down. All exact opposites of what they predicted. But they seem impervious to reality.
The supreme court allows Trump to restrict green cards, upholds religious rights, allows Trump to restrict immigration from certain countries, and agrees Trump does not have to produce his tax returns. And it's like they see none of that.
The economy is doing great. Employment is soaring, manufacturing is up, the stock market is booming. Consumer confidence is strong. Yet HB says the opposite. What country is he talking about?
Now HB is claiming Trump is stealing. Yet the court just threw out the emoluments case against him. Where is HB getting this secret information? How does he get access to such privileged information?
Does it really matter?

I have always loved languages.
One of the things I love about English that is absent in many other languages, is multiple words for things with only very slight differences in reality. The words are so precise, and thus require precision in their usage. A good example would be the words...
Slime, grime, mud, sludge, sleaze, dirt, and muck. All wonderful words, that can sometimes be used interchangeably, and other times mean almost opposite things.
How about grains, motes, bits, flakes, crumbs and dust?
At times you can spot the none native English speakers when they say something like, "crumbs of dust" instead of "grains of dust."
They say eskimoes have many, many words for snow. But English has many, many word for everything.
Take the derogatory terms for women,
Slut, skank, whore, and bitch.
A slut is a woman who will sleep with any man, and implies poor personal hygiene too. Though she may be of any socioeconomic class.
Whereas a skank is a woman of so low a class that she is not able to care for herself regardless her desire to do so.
And whore implies a woman whose body can be bought, usually for far less than it is worth. Implying low esteem.
Though the word "bitch" is losing it's sexual meaning, it originally meant something closer to "slut", as it's original meaning was a female dog in heat. Today it's used to say a woman is mean, and not empathetic.
There are even more derogatory words for men. Some are...
Chump, douche, jerk, doofus bozo, and loser.
Chump and doofus allude to low intellect, bozo to clownish demeanor, and jerk is the male equivalent of the female bitch. Loser has an implication of poor general economic performance.
Some of the words are so close in meaning and so nuanced, its a joy to watch a word artist use them correctly. Consider the words "nerd" and "geek"
Bill Gates is a geek, not a nerd, and Steve Jobs was a nerd, not a geek. Though both of them were jerks.
Knowing precise meanings, and then using the words correctly given those meanings, is an art.

And what to you is religious fervor, is from my vantage point dirty rags. But in His gracious mercy, King Jesus accepts my rags and counts me, a grain of dust, as worthy.

But really, if you are put off by the religion boards trolls, you'll never post there. And blaming a person who is being stalked as "always having dangerous people around him" is morally repugnant. It's like blaming the rape victim for rape.
If you really want a board free of trolls, first be morally honest, and then insist the mods rid us of them, either by controlling their behavior, or by banning them.
A rational honest person doesn't want stalking victims eliminated along with the stalkers just to be rid of stalkers.
