@Melcharaz
Sounds like you are an expert on the theme. You should join in this game.  You don’t have to know much about the game and we always need new players.  It helps to have a few people familiar with the theme.  If you agree to play, you’ll need to unblock DD so he can send you eyes only character/role info. We don’t generally drag any drama from other forums into gameplay and the game is good for building site fraternity.  Hope you play

I think that’s an unforgiving take on a first time player. If we want people to play maf we’ve got to give people time to appreciate the dynamics which are both complex and ephemeral.  I’d encourage user to digest the critique but gloss  over the dudz’s condemnation. Some of us have been playing for years and still VIG the wrong guy

Clarity on Full Forefeit Rules Please
In the case of awarding conduct points solely on the basis of forfeits, there is an exception to these steps: a debater may award conduct points solely for forfeited rounds, but only if one debater forfeited half or more of their rounds or if the voter also awards argument points (or explains their decision not to award argument points in a manner which meets the argument points voting standards).

A full-forfeit debate is defined as a debate that has no argument presented by one side following the opening round, resulting in all subsequent rounds being forfeited. When this is the case, these debates are considered full-forfeit debates and are not moderated unless a voter votes for the forfeiting side.

Thx dude! It's good to see you too! How are things in DART as of late? (Honestly, I think it's gonna be the same old good quality stuff *wink*, just as it was before lol, but I could be surprised)

Also, what was the reaction to my "disappearance", and how many juicy conspiracy theories came about from it? I am genuinely curious lol

I'm kind of the wrongest guy to ask because I just kind of skip over most of that stuff.  I don't even know wtf happened to Ramshutu.  I have certainly just walked away for a while on DDO.  I think the first time I didn't come back for four years. My internet got turned off and when I got it back I just stayed away for a while.   It certainly seems that the history of DDO and DART is replete with people who just vanished one day and I think most of us get the need to just walk away from it some times.  Its good to not be too dependent on any one habit but its also always good when the well-remembered return.

What's wrong with the horseshoe theory?
THEORY has multiple meanings including

"A description of an event or system that is considered to be accurate."

but also

"A coherent statement or set of ideas that explains observed facts or phenomena and correctly predicts new facts or phenomena not previously observed"

The horseshoe theory is an accurate description of something but it doesn't do much to explain or predict political behavior.  I think calling it the "horseshoe observation" might quiet some critics.  The phenomenon is not particularly surprising when one considers that both extremes are alike in their contempt for the establishment (which is typically more politically centrist than say, Trump's America) and each extreme studies the other for successful adaptations and tactics.  Many extremists are more defined by their extremity or their anti-establishment posture than by any idealogy.

We see this when the most ardent Bernie supporters vote Trump, for instance.  Tellingly, 10% of Bernie voters in 2016 voted for Trump in 2016 while in 2020,  when Bernie's support is rather smaller and more socialist, a greater percentage of Bernie voters (15%) have shifted their support to Trump.  Clearly, that 15% is less interested in say, healthcare for all than it is in seeing the present infrastructure crash altogether.  We can see that Russian espionage exploits this dynamic by setting up increasingly radical facebook groups on the far end of either spectrum.  For exaple, Russian money supported California separatists on both ends of the political spectrum.

A vivid illustration of the horseshoe dynamic can be seen in the 2017 marches and protests in Berkeley, Portland, etc.  Certainly, each extreme had its own symbols and demographics and other identifiers but what is striking to me is the way the college lesbians of Antifa adopted the tactics of Proud Boys and Klansmen-  dressed in black, masked, anonymous, gas masks, helmets,  clubs.  Both sides march the same routes, wave signs, flags, etc.  Each spares some rhetoric and violence for the other but most of the action on either side is directed at the police trying to keep them in line.  There are multiple examples of no side being able to tell which side perpetrated some offense or initiated some clash.

User Accounts Policy Discussion
Any thoughts on the related issue of stalking? As a more minor example, we've had at least one person create new accounts at least in part to tag people again after they blocked him.

I don't care whether there's evidence of multi-accounts in this case or not.  A new user who jumps on and immediately starts some unwanted over-engagement should be quickly cautioned and ejected upon persistence.  It seems a core necessity of a debate site to have thick black lines between the artificial controversies, objections, insults of a well-engaged debate and the brotherhood of debaters that should guide our conduct outside of debate.  We're not looking for new debaters who mistake harassment for argument and our fuse ought to be short with those new users who can't demonstrate their understanding of that difference.

Do you believe who issued which reports should be kept private? Something which frequently happens right now, is third party reports from outside the conversation; which gives the reported person reason to believe the other person reported them (via all the green reports handled which begin to appear). ... Don't get me wrong, some such reports are very good, but it can still distort perceptions inside a conversation.
I'd live by Moderator's discretion, I suppose.  If Mods are convinced some user is merely abusing reports to razz some other user then that the abuser loses the presumption of any courtesy of  anonymity.   If Mods suppose a little public humiliation might tame the troll, have at it.  However, I think Mods position on reports should default to privacy, with the privilege of publicizing  abuse or overuse as a means of improving the focus and quality of genuine problem reporting.

2020 Mafia Championships Voting
Folks-

I'm sorry to report I had to drop out of this.  My mom's health took a bad turn on the 2nd.  She is in the hospital and visitation restrictions should have theoretically offered me more time to play but new medical and legal developments keep overwhelming my capacity to keep up with that game and maintain minimum activity.  I stuck around for a couple of rounds hoping time would improve but players were complaining about my inactivity and it started to feel like I was being unfair to them and asked to be excused yesterday.

Perhaps I should have expected that today I suddenly find myself with lots of time.  Family always has a certain genius for blowing up one's expectations.

I regret the disappointing performance when representing this site and ask for your understanding.

If a report is evaluated as spurious or tactical, the reporter should be advised and cautioned.  More than say, 3 spurious reports in a ten day period might qualify for site restrictions.

@Barney
I dont envy mods this problem.  I have some sense of how persistent, even compulsive some users can be when trying to get away with multi-accounts.  Ultimately, the only real arenas for harm are in voting, gaming, and leaderboards.

  • I can't think of a solution for leaderboards but the harms seems fairly minimal.  A user might improve his short term debate rating by resetting his  position but that's not likely to make him a better debater.  Reset offers no improvement for most of the leaderboard stats, which elevate cumulative contributions.
  • In gaming, a single user running multiple players is an obvious cheat.  I think the creator of the game controls the rules and should be free to prohibit any player from any game of that creator's making for any reason, including unsubstantiated suspicions.  I would have no problem with moderators who discretely share their strong suspicions regarding a user with the maker of any game for the purposes of exclusion or even just monitoring.  No user has a right to participate in games just because they are a user in good standing on the site.
  • In debate voting, manufacturing extra voters for the purpose of modifying the vote outcome is an obvious cheat.  Fortunately, the subset of active voters is fairly small at present so we might hope that any preferential voting by users who are also strongly suspected of multi-accounting should be fairly evident under current circumstance.
    • I think such a suspect may be reasonably advised to refrain from preferential voting and if a second instance is detected prohibited from voting altogether for a probationary period (say, 3 months).  Such a prohibition might allow us more time to recognize multi-users by language, habits, oversights, etc.
      • New violations after probation should qualify for site restrictions.
  • User testimony regarding their own conduct is generally unfalsifiable and so makes a poor standard on which to base user membership.  If Mods have good reason to suspect some multi-accounter, I think mods let them know and judge them based on their conduct on this site.  Any multi-account worth using has to eventually engage in conduct that should expose the violation over time.  Those who don't try to take advantage in games and voting aren't really much of a problem.

it's a suicide move for singularity if he is lieing so there isnt really a reason for him to lie

plus nobody else has claimed the cop role, if he was full of shit someone would've called him out.

I agree that its strategically dumb of him to lie- I can't tell if he's lying or misinformed although his track record suggests the former.   I agree that there's no CC for either of his cop claims.  All I can do is fulfill my obligation to advise town he's lying.  Since I am VANILLA and we aren't at mylo at least we'll nab him tomorrow.

Plus if you look, Oro believed Singularity was Town Cop at the very beginning of this DP. His belief changed as soon as he saw that Singularity had copped him guilty.
That was cut & paste from Ragnar.'s post DP1  If you believe I am scum and you believe that I believed that Singularity was COP then why wouldn't I have killed Singularity NP1?

I don't have any evidence that Singularity is not a COP except that he's already lied about his role once but I do know he's claiming false information whether sincerely or not (with singularity, the safe bet is not)

Why would my guilty results on water have anything to do with oro (one would thing that if singularity was for real he'd double check the role)

They must have a tole cop or something because oromagi somehow thinks I am cop though I never stated it other than my dp cop troll dp1

DP1 Singularity claims COP, 12 post ago, Singularity claims COP,  now he's saying "oromagi somehow thinks I am cop though I never stated it" This just comes off as gaslighting now.

Owen and no justification just a character description. ( My character got a short justification)

Racial epithets are Singularity's "go-to" zone as soon as he starts to lose- debates, forums, mafia games, etc  When he starts using the N word you know he knows he lost

what's your opinion on singularitys claim?

I don't know what to think exactly.  Nobody's counter claimed his COP so far but are we in a game where a COP is likely?  don't know. He lied about DAY COP, lied about finding me guilty but does that make him scum?  Hard to say....Singularity just likes to introduce a lot of chaos into every game he plays.

Does anybody know anything about the cartoon?  Singul claims Owen and the wiki portrays Owen as this fat naked farting party boy.... which doesn't seem consistent with cop.  My justification made a certain amount of sense so how does Owen justify COP?

my best guess is singularity is just tossing hand grenades.  I think we should flip him for lying and see if there's anything to what he says.  If its down to my word vs Singularity's I'd argue:  which one of us has already been caught lying in this short game?

Flynn vindicated. Rogue FBI thwarted.
A fairly stark example of Trumpkins believing whatever they're told.  Flynn has confessed that he took more than half a million dollars from enemy states, that he was advising Turkish and Russian spies how to handle the USFG.  As the Reagan appointed Judge Sullivan said to Flynn when accepting his guilty pleas- "You have sold out your country"  and openly wondered why Flynn was not charged with treason (a capital offense)

Even now, nobody (not Flynn, not Trump) denies that the top US spy was secretly taking hundreds of thousands from Putin and Erdogan.   In any other time and place,  double secret agents who get discovered and captured get jailed or hung posthaste.  James Bond  would strangle treasonous bitches like Flynn with his bare hands.  A top spy like Flynn who had been turned by Russian agents could expect life in SuperMax.  Only in Trump's America are confessed Russian spies championed.  Only those who hope to subject US interests to Russian interests would celebrate this breathtaking attack on the integrity of our National Security.

Increasingly, "Vote Trump" and "Death to America" are aligning their interests to mean the same thing.

Forfeits make debate unmoderated or awards no points
-->
@Melcharaz
I think the opposite should be true.  On the first forfeit, the debate should end with the non-forfeiter winning full points.   Whoever forfeits first usually loses the debate anyway, we just have to wait for week or months for the inevitable to resolve.

You used real world examples to say that real debaters seldom forfeit.  That's true because that would be a black mark on the defaulter but when it does happen in the real world is there really any question that the person left standing won the debate?

Such a rule would be ruthlessly exploited- any time your opponent makes a better argument than you the smart move will be forfeit the next round an nullify the debate.

Daily Mail assists wife in murder. Blames Trump.
  • I love that GrayParrot dismisses newspapers but relies on some coked up ex-lawyer making videos out of his car in Toronto for an accurate daily news
  • I missed the part where the Daily Mail is under implication but yeah, the Daily Mail is a English tabloid- it barely pretends to be news.
  • There is a death investigation..  There's always a death investigation when someone dies although most death investigations are short affairs.  I certainly don't discount the possibility of murder but there is no whiff of a homicide investigation as yet and police actually complained when the Washington Free Beacon invented a rumor to that effect last Tuesday.  The Beacon had to run the story that the opposite was true on Wednesday including the Mesa PD denial of the claim.  The previous day's story only stated that Mesa PD does not comment on active investigations.
  • but I've read of many elaborate murder plots and some small percentage of them turn out to be true, some smaller percentage of which are found not guilty.  I'd say based on the available evidence her story would be hard to prove or disprove.
  • Its interesting to track the spectrum of conservative media.  You can often tell the Trumpkins from regular old conservative media by their willingness to report "homicide" investigation, without even, apparently, making a call to the Police Dept to confirms.  Fox said investigation underway in headline but reported NO homicide investigation in the last graph- tricky.
  • Why is that every GreyParrot topic heading ends up being mostly bullshit?  Last time it was Chuck Schumer's armed revolution, right?  Was there a gunfight in Congress and the lamestream media just never reported?  Why not just report a story truthfully?

I want to debate liberals
The definition of liberal has changed deal with it.
Just because FOX news requires you to think that does not make it true.  Dictionaries record semantic shifts, not Rush Limbaugh.

Technically I would fall under the classically liberal paradigm
Bullshit.

  • You don't believe that all people are equal in rights.
  • You consistently prefer totalitarian propaganda to liberal science.
  • You think that guarantees of human rights imply an absence of responsibility when the opposite is true.  Anarchy is not freedom
  • Your name, Singularity, reflects your core ideology that humans should build robots that take over human decision-making and punish humans who don't submit
    • Your whole ideology is one big  "let's give up"  in search of some enemy you might surrender to.
  • Because you don't understand that America is by definition a liberal project, you don't understand the word liberal or the nation called the United States of America

Singularity: "If it causes the complete destruction of the west, I am fine with it."

Greyparrot: "a culling Nuclear holocaust might not be such a bad thing for the future of the human race"

In any public policy debate, the side that favors "let's kill the public" always loses because that side has demonstrated lack of interest in the public good.  Since Singularity and Greyparrot reveal that their motivation for championing disinformation is ultimately the death of the US, their opinions should be  viewed as unfavorable to the interests of Americans.

Trump at risk of losing reelection because of his own retarded supporters
-->
@Imabench
I agree that Trump missed his first real chance at popular support and winning an election by majority by inaction and misunderstanding for the first 8 or 9 weeks of the pandemic in US.

Even now, Trump seem to placing all of his chips on inaction when his own experts tell him the odds are good this thing will come roaring back just in time for elections.  If Halloween is cancelled due to COVID, I give Trump zero chance of an honest win.  I think the odds are better that Trump will try to cancel or postpone the election than that he will win by honest vote.

Have you seen this article from Admin Theory and Praxis?

This is from 3 weeks ago now but Johnson, et al argue that Republican's more liberal approach to COVID is already cutting deep into the thin electoral advantages that won Trump WI, MI, PA, etc in the 2016 election.

"The COVID-19 pandemic could have a particularly direct effect on the U.S. presidential election scheduled for November 3, 2020. All members of the U.S. Congress, one-third of Senators, and numerous state and local elected officials are up for election at this time. Given the gravity of the pandemic situation, it is likely to have a profound impact on the election (e.g., Cillizza, 2020).

This research note models the potential effects of the COVID-19 virus on the political landscape of the U.S. past election projections have not accounted for the vast loss of life that is currently being projected as part of the COVID-19 response modeling (COVID ACT NOW, 2020). Should these dire projections hold, the political shifts in the nation could be dramatic based on the change in demographics alone

Recall that individuals in this age group are more likely to vote Republican, which explains why Republican voters in this category are projected to be lost in greater numbers than Democratic voters. In looking at Table 3, if the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania continues to use only social distancing to combat the latest coronavirus, they could potentially lose over 13,000 more Republican than Democratic voters, in the 65+ age category. Even with a shelter-in-place order in effect, states such as Michigan and North Carolina could see significantly greater losses of Republican voters in this age group. These results suggest that when considering nothing other than the loss of life due to COVID-19, the demographic shifts alone, could be enough to alter the political landscape of the United States.

As an example, if the results of the calculations noted in Table 3 were applied to the outcomes of the 2016 presidential election, a significant narrowing of the results in the closest contests would occur. For instance, Pennsylvania is implementing a social distancing action showing a projection of 190,000 adult fatalities including across the three age categories 18–49 (7,600), 50–64 (30,400), and 65+ (152,000). After accounting for voter participation, the calculations show that among age group one, 953 more Democratic voters than Republicans voters would lose their lives. In age group two, 1,824 more Republicans than Democrats would potentially perish while in age group three 13,680 more Republicans would potentially perish. Cumulatively, 14,551 more Republicans than Democrats would perish under these projections, a significant change given that Trump carried the Commonwealth by 44,292 votes. Michigan is also implementing a social distancing action and projections show that the estimated loss of life is lower than in Pennsylvania. However, Trump carried the state by 10,704 votes with the narrowest margin in the nation. The calculations suggest that 11,145 more Republicans than Democrats would potentially perish, suggesting that Michigan would be more difficult for Republicans to maintain their narrow win in 2016 for future elections."

My fav 20th century French philosopy book is

Mythologies is a 1957 book by Roland Barthes. It is a collection of essays taken from Les Lettres nouvelles, examining the tendency of contemporary social value systems to create modern myths. Barthes also looks at the semiology of the process of myth creation, updating Ferdinand de Saussure's system of sign analysis by adding a second level where signs are elevated to the level of myth.

He examines the mythology of Marilyn Monroe and the mythology of Pro Wrestling, etc.  It is pretty great

The Myth of Sisyphus (French: Le Mythe de Sisyphe) is a 1942 philosophical essay by Albert Camus. The English translation by Justin O'Brien was first published in 1955.
Influenced by philosophers such as Søren Kierkegaard, Arthur Schopenhauer, and Friedrich Nietzsche, Camus introduces his philosophy of the absurd, that life is inherently devoid of meaning and consequently absurd, but humans will nevertheless forever search for meaning.[1] Camus compares the absurdity of man's life with the situation of Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology who was condemned to repeat forever the same meaningless task of pushing a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again.

How are those doctors financially motivated to lie about corona virus if corona virus is creating a warzone forcing everyone to go to health clinics that he makes a profit from them running to
Crucial question which I answered above and you failed to read.  Urgent Care clinics crashed during this emergency because they lacked the equipment to treat coronavirus.  Plenty of coronavirus patients showed up at this clinics only to be referred to an acutal emergency room.  Meanwhile, Urgent Care's usual patients- people with strep throats or a funky rash and just want a quick prescription for something or people who don't have a family doctor and don't want to pay ER prices decided that sitting in a waiting room with a bunch potentially infectious people generally stayed home.

So here's two doctors  who left ERs behind to buy a more lucrative middle man franchise and now those franchises are out of the loop of any medical demand.

I heard a doctor on the radio last night comment about these jokers' analysis,  "imagine an urgent care clinic said that 12% of their patients came in with broken arms in April and concluded therefore that 12% of Californians had broken arms- that is the magnitude of the stupidity FOX is advocating here"

So what this means is you gotta go to court to determine what to do when Executive Privilege clashes with Legislative Oversight. Various cases of this nature are already pending before the Court.

The obvious problem being that a corrupt or ill-intentioned  president can swamp the courts with spurious, even absurd claims of executive privilege, as is true today.

Let's recall the SCOTUS has not ruled on executive privilege vs Congressional subpeona

"Regarding requests from Congress (instead of from the courts) for executive branch information, as of a 2014 study by the Congressional Research Service, only two federal court cases had addressed the merits of executive privilege in such a context, and neither of those cases reached the Supreme Court"

"Generally speaking, presidents, congresses and courts have historically tended to sidestep open confrontations through compromise and mutual deference in view of previous practice and precedents regarding the exercise of executive privilege"

Trump's disordered personality does not allow for public expressions of compromise or mutual deference as Trump views as weakness such pillars of democracy and functional govt.
