I was reading this thread: https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/381
The idea was weird but there was no reason to lock the thread, and less reason to be catty about it.
"Yeah, no." reminds me of reddit mods, lol. in the near future RIP DART

I agree strongly with Bench and would also like to point out that holding off at least a year or so to do a hall of fame solves the issue that was brought up by Vaarka. It's simply true that if we did it now or any time soon a lot of the votes would be based on things that happened on DDO because there is so much overlap between the two sites. The longer we wait, the more DDOs relevance to this site fades
This is a new site. I don't know if it will last. I hope it does. But let's wait until some legendary stuff actually happens to create a hall of fame

"I promised you people that we'll think about the voting system, just give me some time to finish some other basic things before we jump into it."
Yeah I get you have a lot on your plate, but put me down as someone who very strongly believes that there is no justification for a multi category voting system
"And thett3, mind you language, especially when you are creating topics."
I mean, I feel like you should be admonishing me for misspelling "Grammar" but okay
also how do you quote people?

well it remains to be seen what happens on this site but on DDO back when people actually voted on debates they tended to use the other points to stack their vote so it was worth more. At the very least it was ridiculous that the other points added up to be more than what the arguments were worth. I remember it being at the point where any seven point vote was considered (rightfully so most of the time) to be a vote bomb, which is ridiculous if you think about it. The only people who filled out the entire ballot typically had malicious intent
My opinion is that if the conduct is sufficiently bad it should warrant a loss of the debate, but I don’t really have a problem keeping it either

These voting categories need to go away. Debates need to be judged on solely on a win/loss ballot, full stop. I proved this conclusively in my debates with Roy and Zarroette

got it...still don’t agree but I was surprised you didn’t see how having an explicitly different legal standard based on race is a dangerous road to go down

”In cases where police officers kill African-American individuals who are innocent of crimes:
(1) The burden of proof on the prosecution in their criminal trials should be lowered to the balance of probabilities, rather than the "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard”
There is literally no justification for changing the rules exclusively for black people
Yeah

"for example, calling all Jewish people "f*cking k*kes who deserve to get sodomized by sword point before being burned alive" would certainly violate site policy as it is currently written."
For clarification since you said all Jewish people, would if be okay if I called a specific Jewish person, say Dtaylor, a "f*cking [k*ke] who deserves to get sodomized by sword point before being burned alive?"

I can’t begin to comprehend how naive one would have to be to look at history think that a united “Earthian” race is even a remote possibility, let alone inevitable, but here we are. Just saying that you think something is going to happen eventually isn’t an argument for why we should do it. Policy should be decided based on how it effects the populace, not some abstract moral ideal about the “browning” of the world

yeah, most of the pro immigration arguments just come off as sophistry to me. On the surface level they make sense but get weaker and weaker the more you dive into them. I didn’t even get started on how this massive influx destroys social capital

I’ve been following the DOJs lawsuit against Harvard fairly closely. The DOJ is alleging that Harvard unlawfully discriminated against Asian-American applicants (which is probably true)
a lot of documents have come out of this and I think I’ve discovered the argument that Harvard uses internally (on the DL) to justify affirmative action. While I don’t agree with it, it’s actually a pretty good argument.
The value of an educatipn at a place like Harvard or Yale is not the things you learn there. There is a subset of the student population at these schools who come from extraordinarily wealthy and powerful families who buy them a spot. The true utility of an Ivy Leauge education is the ability to network with these families, and affirmative action is about making sure every group gets a taste.
Thoughts? I don’t agree with it, but that’s the best argument for affirmative action that I could come up with

“The main benefit is that immigrant workers fill domestic labor shortages, by taking jobs that native-born American workers can't/won't take.“
Even this argument isn’t that compelling. I addressed this in my (unfortunately deleted) debate with Tej. The USA is simply too big and (economically) diverse to just generalize that there’s a labor shortage. There’s a reason wages in the North Dakota oil fields are so high—it’s an extremely low population state and no one wants to move there to do a dirty and dangerous job. So wages have to go up to encourage people to relocate. If every position in an undesirable or undeveloped part of the country can be filed with an immigrant Americans will never be able to take advantage of localized labor shortages.
As for jobs Americans “won’t do”...I’m very skeptical. Those jobs were done pre-1965. Systemic unemployment is a very real issue, workforce participation for prime age males has fallen off a cliff and each year more and more people are on disability, even though medicine continues to advance. The problem is simply that wages in jobs like construction are too low for Americans to take, especially if you have an out such as SSDI. Cut off immigration and these wages will have to go up. Labor costs would go up too, but by how much? I don’t think it would be nearly enough to offset the massive social dysfunction caused by a large subset of our average to low skilled workers being cut out of the workforce entirely. Any argument about how a massive increase in the supply of labor doesn’t drive down wages is pure sophistry.
Economists say that limiting immigration is bad economics because immigrants spur demand. I suspect that if this is true, immigration restriction is bad economics in the same way that tariffs are bad economics. Maybe the total amount of wealth decreases, but how has the distribution changed? To me it seems that mass immigration ends up being a wealth transfer from the bottom and the middle to the very top.
Spacetime already addressed the societal issues with mass immigration in the OP, but it’s worth pointing out that even if the extremely simplistic “melting pot” model is accurate...so what? What if I don’t want to live in a “melting pot” where my grandchildren’s culture isn’t recognizable to me?

I don’t think Juggle is ever going to fix DDO, because from their perspective it’s already been fixed. Their site no longer hosts links to illegal pirated material. From a financial standpoint the domain name is inherently valuable and there’s plenty of old content to generate Alexa rankings. Very few if any non users checked in to read the posts of a couple dozen members, people would search an issue and a debate or poll would pop up. That content is still gonna be there so I don’t think they’re going to bother to fix the site
