Existence (response to #34 and #45):
Sorry for the late reply...

Hey Barn, do you believe, that, we humans exist as part of ;

1?} the one verse { Universe } of occupied space  --even if so called many-worlds--- i.e. a finite set of occupied space events, when considering a finite time frame, say, within 60 seconds, ergo, an integral a finite, wholistic unit, of pushes, pulls, orbits, toques, inside-outs and etc type set of limitations, or

2?} an infinite set of occupied space events, that, being infinite would mean that, there is no whole-listic integrity, within a finite period of time   ---again, say 60 seconds---.

..." 3: the quality or state of being complete or undivided completeness "....

This not to say, there are not indiviual quanta, but rather, that, they all { finite set }  are entangled in one way or combinations of each other  --ex gravity, charge, dark energy etc---- as unitary set.
I would have say choice 1. There are a finite set of events, even if said number is incalculable from the inside, making it appear like choice 2.

As an example: Designing a character in any video game, adding one more fixed cosmetic item raised the exponent coefficient to the available number of appearance combinations by 1 (I may be misusing these terms; it's been a little while since I reviewed this theorem); if it can be moved around on the avatar, then 1 for each potential location. This results in trillions of potential appearances a player may choose from; and yet, the designers can fairly easily calculate it. Further, while the player has selected a certain shade of flamingo pink eyeshadow, this doesn't affect anything within the game that a display outside the game contains a value to represent that (and if multiplayer, the colors will be simplified on everyone else's display; meaning it might only be a few hundred thousand potential appearances anyone else will see).

...

Barney, do you believe our occupied space { fields, quanta etc } Universe extends infinitely spatially, or,

that, our occupied space Universe, is of finite volume of space?  To be clear, I know you dont know, as no one does. just looking what your gut-mind instincts tell you at this moment,  full well knowing that yesterday and tommorrow your belief may flip and flop { oscillate }.

Finite ex  O similar or expressed as  (  )  or as /\  or as [   ] etc type informal symbolic expressions of a finite spatial limit
..macro and micro...
I believe it is limitless, even while the amount of space that the universe will ever expand to occupy will reach some limit prior to the heat death of the universe.

Definition of a Racist

@ADreamOfLiberty
Very good Ayn Rand quote.

While she had trouble making a compelling narrative, in snapshot form she's produced some great points.

I remember an ethics professor confusing her with Ethical Egoism, to which I argued Rand's villains are that and there's nuance which separates Objectivism from that. Granted, I don't think people should drink the Rand-aid; merely her work has lasting merit so should not be lightly dismissed in whole.

Definition of a Racist
I'm curious what are everyone's favorite ways to determine if someone is (or is not) a racist?

This keeps coming up in so many discussions; and while I doubt we'll ever have true consensus, I am interested in seeing the variety of answers.

While it suffers scope limitations, I deeply enjoy a modified Ryan Reynolds quote:
Four or five moments! That’s all it takes to be a [racist].
People think you wake up a [racist]… brush your teeth a [racist]… ejaculate into a soap dispenser a [racist].
But, no, being a [racist] takes only a few moments!
A few moments… doing the ugly stuff no one else will do.

Various Military (2nd response to #33):
  • Now and with the benefit of hindsight, what are your thoughts on American military activities in Iraq?
Our involvement is too inconsistent, and is has made more enemies than friends over there.
Further, we were lied to about why the war was necessary. Granted, Saddam had weapons in excess of various treaties; but clearly nothing to the scale that our president implied.

I think we should instead use much of the military budget to directly better our country, before trying to selectively fix the rest of the world.

  • Preferred side arm (for actual use, not just based on looks)?  (I would go for a P226, just based on functionality).
I sadly was not allowed to carry one. I had to use an M4, which is not garbage, but is very much suboptimal. For main weapons, I'm a fan of the FN Scar.

Speaking of pistols, I'm no expert. I do suggest revolvers as the standard for non-military use (reliable even if you don't practice and maintain it). That said, the P226 does look like an impressive weapon (I'd rather bring it into battle than the M4).

  • Do you read fiction?  If so, what?  Have you read the Dune series?  If so, what did you think about it?
I do read a lot of fiction.

I only recently got through the first Dune book, and am undecided if I'll continue into the others.
The villain was such a lazy generic design, which did not age well. Good villains need motives, and certainly shouldn't be ordering their best subordinates to kill each other at a whim.
Otherwise I enjoyed the book, particularly the take on seeing the future and the goals the main character set with it.

FYI, the first wave of the new Discworld recordings came out today. I already endorsed Small Gods, but Andy Serkis makes it an 11.

Food (response to #39):
what kind of food(or styles of food) do you enjoy the most?
My favorite food is Pesto Pizza.
A close second had been lasagna, but I no longer eat that after some heartbreak.

My favorite dessert is tiramisu, as much as I haven't had it for a couple years. I will say that I make it better than any restaurant I've tried.

Related to food, I should hit a loss of 20 pounds this week on my current diet.

But I'm not allowed to address the mods laziness in a topic about removing the mods.
OMG you're so opposed! No one can read what you're writing because some mean moderator disabled your posting privileges... What's that? You're still allowed to post? The only mod to tell you you're not allowed to doesn't exist outside your imagination?

Karen, the only person oppressing you around here is located inside the mirror. And no, us not banning everyone you dislike without reason is not oppression.

That I give you the benefit of doubt and point out better ways to get results, is because I operate under the assumption that you might actually want progress on things you complain of instead of just pity.

Right now, you're too technologically incompetent to even tag any moderators when asking policy questions in random threads.

You lost your quick reporting privileges for massively abusing them time and again, and have made no effort to show the moderation team that you have since gained the self control to not cycle thread to thread reporting anyone you dislike regardless of the actual content of said posts.

And yet, here am I again, reminding you that you can still make reports; just not in a format that allows you to quickly spam a dozen of them effortlessly.

All your complaining about how I am not investigating reports you are refusing to share with me (it would take less than a minute for you to copy/paste them), is wasting the time and effort that could go into disciplining this group of members who are apparently calling you and/or other members child rapists.

Various Military (response to #38):
Technically only one deployment, but it was a case of punishing my unit for doing a good job. We were supposed to be there only 3 months on a high intensity deployment, and that kept getting extended because we were too valuable. With increasing burnout, our casualties sky rocketed, and then the Troop Surge happened so we had to stay even longer.
If I recall correctly, that would have been around 2008-2009.  I don't envy that situation.  I also didn't realize you and I are about the same age.
Correct. I was in Iraq 2006-2008, and left the army in 2009. I'm in my late thirties.

With increasing burnout, our casualties sky rocketed, and then the Troop Surge happened so we had to stay even longer.
Years later, I wound up teaching an ex-Army guy who did a couple of tours in Afghanistan while he got his bachelor's degree on the GI Bill.   He shared similar experiences.  The multiple tours, often back to back, was reckless and irresponsible.  It's not like those risks were unknown.  They were widely known, and yet proceeded anyway.

Now it seems like there's the opposite problem, along with a general deterioration of military competencies and leadership.
I don't know much about the current state of our military, but I imagine the systemic problems have continued to ruin it.

Speaking of "It's not like those risks were unknown.  They were widely known, and yet proceeded anyway."
This hits even before deployments. Such as the 82nd Airborne Division's physical fitness program, which designed in direct violation of army regulations to injure soldiers and thus harm their physical fitness. The irony of that is not lost on me.

Male on male. There was a fellow soldier who started obsessing with me, and treated my refusal to watch gay porn with him as some kind of challenge. I can't remember all of the escalation, but it reached a peak one night in Iraq when he tried to force himself on me while I was asleep in my cot. Suffice to say, I woke up swinging my fists. For this, he received no punishment.
Reminds me of experiences I had in athletics when I was in high school.  Sometimes it's hard to tell the line between "boys will be boys" type egregiousness or the beginnings of something worse.

Do you know what ever became of of him?  Is he now a high ranking officer?  Seems like today's military would be ok with that.
I don't know what became of him. I will say he exemplifies two core problems of how organizations get diseased:
  1. When people like that get rank, they'll use it to unfairly promote others of their ilk (and of course help their buddies avoid punishment). This becomes a self-reinforcing cycle, which makes it harder for good candidates to get to the top, and undermines any efforts at improvement they might try to implement in the rare cases where they make it.
  2. It's gone too far, so we can't investigate now, because all the earlier misdeeds we allowed would come to light... This type of thing, is part of why the army claims LaVena Johnson shot herself in the head, then poured acid on herself to destroy the evidence, and left bloody footprints leading away (true story).

Lawful Orders (response to #36):
Given that I got in a lot of trouble for declining the "lawful order" of planting dirty needles in a public park right by a playground, I was done with the military anyways.

Various Military (response to #33):
  • How old were you when you enlisted?  Deployed to Iraq?  How many tours?
I was 20 (turned 21 in basic).

  • Why did you enlist?  Do you regret it?  Do you regret leaving?
In college, there was a lot of anti-war stuff from my teachers, including an American death toll on one of the classroom doors. So signing up as a medic to do something to stem that, matched my proactive ethical stance. That said, there's never just one reason why someone enlists. Life was at a low point for a number of reasons. So really, a great SJW reason to enlist, and the lack of reasons to not.
I don't regret it, as much as I wish I had done many parts of it differently (for starters, the air force apparently treats their people like human beings).
I miss my actual job in it, but actually getting to do anything related to my job was a rarity in the 82nd. Given that I got in a lot of trouble for declining the "lawful order" of planting dirty needles in a public park right by a playground, I was done with the military anyways.

  • What was the sexual assault incident in the military?  Male on male?  Commanding officer?  In what context?
Male on male. There was a fellow soldier who started obsessing with me, and treated my refusal to watch gay porn with him as some kind of challenge. I can't remember all of the escalation, but it reached a peak one night in Iraq when he tried to force himself on me while I was asleep in my cot. Suffice to say, I woke up swinging my fists. For this, he received no punishment.
After deployment when he was about to be promoted, he literally grabbed my ass in formation in front of everyone, at which I rejected him yet again. So he swore in front of everyone that he was going to use his new rank to get revenge for that. This being the 82nd airborne, there was not even a delay on his promotion.

That got a little heavy. I'll reply to the rest later.

After seeing the mods engage in conduct that blatantly abuses their power
By this do you mean banning Incel-chud for doxing? You've been complaining about that a lot, but I figure it's best to doublecheck.

Anyways, your document is well laid out. There's some nitpicky misunderstandings (Michael is the only one who can assign or remove moderator powers, not the head mod), but those are easily remedied. I don't like the amount of red tape in it (precisely this many hours, between precisely these hours; and spend up to a week asking people if they really made forum posts adding their names to a petition). As moderators are members of the site, I am not sure why they would be barred from voting. I like the spirit of the thread limit rule, but trust me, you set a rule like that, and someone will make several additional threads in protest against their freedom of speech being stolen.

I more strongly disagree with this: "Any official moderation acts by a removed moderator shall be null and void." Take me for example. Who do you imagine would put in the time to unban the many spambots I get rid of? And for what benefit? ... Not even getting into the coding challenges, of archiving instead of deleting their spam posts so that they can be restored.

I do know what I've turned down more people than I've said yes to, and I've never pulled lame tactics on my partners (I guess I just don't want them to feel dirty and regret it the next day). Sex can be a wonderful part of a relationship, but for me it isn't a requirement.

Violence (response to #21):
My stance on this may seem contradictory...

I think violence should be used far less often than it is. It should almost never be the intended course of action.

That said, I have not punched nearly enough people in the face or otherwise. I'm pretty sure the total number only comes to four or five, and three of those were when I was a kid. Of those two were Neo-Nazis (my brothers), one was defending myself from sexual assault in army, and I mildly regret the remaining two.

I have also been in a few long distance firefights in Iraq. I know I did not shoot anyone, since I did not engage in indiscriminate spray and pray (sadly, that's all too common in the military)... Instead even when doing suppressive fire, I aimed my shots.

Slavery (also in response to #16):
I mean I was born into slavey. Modern slavery is more rare, but it sadly still happens.

My parents had two perfect boys whom they viewed as the future of the white race, and the rest of us were bred as a cheap work force.

At least in Canada, one of the tactics Neo-Nazis and pro-lifers use to get away with this is fake private schools.
My oldest two brothers of course got a real education. For the rest of us, if we were caught with books it meant we had too much time on our hands so more work; when there was not work for the movement available, it was time to paint the house again.
I ended up teaching myself literacy when I was 14 or 15, and escaped when I was 18 with help from one of my older sisters who had previously gotten away.

Shortly before I escaped, I had a conversation with my mother because I didn't understand peoples obsession with having children, and specifically did not have a desire to have any of my own. She basically broke down in a panic because if I didn't have children, then there wouldn't be enough white people on the planet for my oldest brother's kids to make more white babies with.

Name Change (response to #16):

In short:
It felt right.

At length:
It's been well over a year since I had a real formal debate, with the last I remember turned into tutoring sessions.

The longer I'm retired from debating, the less I feel like quite the same person on this site; to which I've been pondering changing my username for quite awhile. At first I thought the desire might pass, and then I just did not have anything specific to which I wished to change my username.

When Barney popped into my head, I tried to dismiss it, but it just wouldn't go away. When I started giving it serious consideration, it just felt right.

I'll freely admit that the name Barney brings a couple fictional characters to mind. I certainly would not want to resemble either of them in their entirety (such as disrespecting women or breaking into songs), but a smart snazzy dresser and a purple clad educator; those are things to which I strongly relate... In terms of style, I probably own too many suits (if such is even possible), and indeed my favorite color is purple. In terms of mental faculties, I can safely say without giving into narcissism that I am a genius (even if I am not infrequently thick headed), and in my role on this site I am routinely trying to lift people up to become better debaters.

Who I was before, was about beating people in debates. It was sometimes a good test of myself, but it was also quite egocentric. Now, I mostly wish to help people unlock their excellence.

Immigration and Patriotism (response to #13):
Both are correct.

I was born in Canada, and spent the first decade of my life there.

In my twenties I dropped out of college to enlist as a combat medic. I ended up in the 82nd airborne, and served in Iraq. I had actually earned a slot in Ranger School, but a pogue I was forced to go through in his laziness managed to sabotage my security clearance (literally just putting something already completed in the mail box was too much work for a whole month; and he kept lying by claiming it was already done).

To have security clearance in the US military, you cannot be a foreign national. However, military service makes someone eligible to take the citizenship exam.

Funny thing was that during deployment, I got a second vacation due to that security clearance issue. I was required to have top secret security clearance to be on the mission set to which I was critical personnel. My direct superiors got into a little trouble, since I had tried to square it away just before deployment, but they had chosen to prevent me from attending the citizenship exam.

One thing that still stings to this day, was after deployment when I tried to vote, they tried to order me to not vote due to some epically bizarre sense of nationalism they suffered.

Political Polarization (response to #9):
Mainstream media is largely rubbish. This is chiefly the result of perverse incentives.

What we should have with the liberal vs conservative networks, is slanted opinions of the same events. But their pursuit of ratings means they don't want to offend anyone within their core demographic, so they take turns burying their heads in the sand ignoring the news on which they are duty bound to report.

Sadly, middle ground news networks are going to offend fragile sensibilities of crybabies on both sides, so have lower maximal ratings as people self-self away from things they don't want to hear. A Venn Diagram could show it pretty easily.  Not to say they could not be successful, but they would have to work a lot harder and find an appeal more powerful and appealing than the metaphorical blanket the others give.

Have you watched Anchorman 2? It's pretty much a mockumentary on what went wrong with the news, when it became about entertainment instead of informing anyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xvRtZZhURg

Political Polarization (response to #3):
I don't think the average people on either side are that tunnel visioned. The problem is the loudest talkers distort it. There was a great comic from Morning Breakfast Cereal on exactly this issue. That said, things are getting bad due to tribal virtue ethics and over enthusiastic application of otherness.  Still, I think the average person on each side generally want to same things as each other.

As for the USA splitting up... I think we are too reliant upon each other to attempt that. Further, the American Civil War affirms that the union will not allow states to secede.
To more directly answer the question: Sure it would solve some problems, but it would probably create twice as many, and ones of greater magnitude at that.

RFDs (response to #2):
I agree the rules are indeed extremely lax.
This may be surprising given that they're like a dozen pages, yet those pages are in large part to guide better voting among people who wish to be better voters.
While it's true those rules enable moderation to remove votes for a variety of reasons, said reasons usually boil down to the voter overlooking something basic and essential.
Speaking generally, an intentionally bad voter can get away with a lot if they dress it up.

I will add that I don't know what the perfect level of strictness would be. I suppose it would vary with the site population. Some laxness to avoid discouraging potential voters (particularly new ones) is important, but the goal of a larger voter pool to cancel out the occasional bad vote has not been attained.

There is also the problem of resource constraints. Removing a bad yet detailed vote, can require reading the whole debate to understand why a lengthy vote is not relevant to what was actually presented.

You're getting into an area of deep absurdity playing a semantics game.

Russia is huge, with a massively diverse genetic landscape. That some people dislike the choices of the dictator, to you means someone is racist. We clearly have vastly different grasps of the English language.

Furries exist all around the world. They share culture and traditions with each other. Your definition would define them as a race.

Likewise since I reject Neo-Nazidom, your definition would define me as not part of the race I was born into since I don't murder nor endorse the murder of people for perceived genetic differences.

This website is Russia-owned. What is our official stance on the Russian genocide of Ukraine?
-->
@3RU7AL
Not so. Human rights still apply. Granted, people try to apply human rights to things that are not rights.

As an example, Incels insist women not putting out is human rights violation against them. It should be self evident that using someone elses body, is not a right.

Putting mass murderers on trail would certainly be ideal. It is however not always feasible. Putting a stop to killings, takes precedence.

@3RU7AL
does this "cancer analogy" apply to any other "(sub)humans" or is this a case of "special-pleading" ?

the concept of "human rights" is something of an obsession for me
Certainly. The key thing being that it is by someone's willful choice, not genetics or even culture.

To support that it's not a cultural issue: I had to disown half my family, due to their sustained pro-genocide beliefs. While I was raised/brainwashed in that isolated environment, having any compassion I disagreed with murdering everyone who isn't one of us.

@RationalMadman
Can we type that on a Russian website? Is it racist to worry?
It's not racist to dislike racists. Additionally, it is fear over a valid cultural issue which is not passed down genetically.

And yes, Russian aggression against Ukraine is racist. They previously ethnically cleaned up to 8 million Ukrainians.

If you were looking closely at the head shapes of the two, to declare that makes one better, then you would be committing racism.

@3RU7AL
i'm guessing you've somehow drawn the conclusion that some individuals are more human than others
I do entertain the notion that some people by their own choices, reject shared humanity. While I would still classify Putin as technically human, like a cancerous growth that is also technically human, surgery is needed to remove it.

Question Brainstorming for Next Referendum
-->
@oromagi
FYI, we (or at least I) encourage community lead referendums. If you want to put the work in, you're welcome to initiate one.

That said, I'll give feedback on the bullet points...
First, and I'm sure you already meant this, but I advise making all those proposed separate referendums into questions in a single larger one.

  • I propose a MEEP that states that the majority opinion of debaters on DART outweighs the opinion of the moderation team and on those rare occasions where mods must stray from the voter-approved  MEEPs, the DART community is constantly consulted and negotiated with as part of any decision the moderators make to modify MEEPs.  Mod rules state that MEEPs are binding and so moderators should see themselves as bound.
There's a fair bit to unpack here...

If I understand this correctly, the main goal is to codify that mods communicate far better when deviating from course set by previous referendums.

Further, a refinement to the official referendum rules to specifically state that referendums are binding. While I respect Bsh1's work in codifying it, I would personally be glad to see the referendum process rewritten (the extension by no more than 12 hours, is weird in practice... Plus two days does not seem to be enough time to give people a fair chance to participate; even if the week I aimed for proved needlessly long). I would also love to see the specific name MEEP done away with.

So yeah, please rewrite the referendum rules, and lets get the new ones voted on.

  • I propose a MEEP to eliminate the office of DART President, since I think we've established that nobody seems to expect anything from that office and so that office proved a  divisive waste of time.
Seems premature. Maybe the president will do something... Maybe not... I don't care much; I just hope we don't go back and forth on if it exists every referendum from now on.

  • I propose a MEEP that eliminates EDUCATION as a Forum Category and makes HISTORY  and CONSPIRACY THEORIES new Forum Categories and arranges Forum categories so that the most recently posted to Category is seen at the top of the Category list until a Category with a newer post pushes all the Categories down one.  This way, posters are less tempted to miscategorize Topics for improved visibility.
I've previously lead some forum restructuring, and would glad to see more of it. Ultimately, there is no one optimal set of forums here, as we'll have a slowly shifting userbase with different needs over time. Yet, I am loving the idea of a conspiracy theory forum, and suspect it would aid site traffic.

  • I propose a separate Debate Tournament page that's built to be faster and less formal-debates have no set rounds but each debater has a 10K character limit.  There can be up to three debaters on either side of an issue.  Debaters can argue back and forth as much as they like until they hit that 10K limit then they're done.  Debates end as soon as all debaters hit their limit or 72 hrs passes.  It takes 7 votes+24 hrs to end the voting phase.  To earn a berth in the tournament, debaters must have voted on 3 debates.  Leaderboards for tournaments refresh to 0 every hundred days.
Sounds like some very cool long term functionality. You'd have to get Michael to agree to code it, which will be when he has time and gumption for it, but still sounds cool.
