New changes

Added debates information to the profile pages and fixed some minor bugs.

-----

I've had some severe food poisoning last night and I feel like crap, so I'll check the other threads and answer questions some time later when I feel better, thanks for understanding.

hm, a full screen without the sidebar seems pretty interesting. Having given it much thought until now.
Yeah, I think it can be quite interesting. I am worried about consistency though because all other pages will stay as they are now, which is probably not a good design thing ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Btw, regarding the PM chat, I am thinking about making it "full screen", so not showing the office sidebar when you are there, just the chat. Do you think it's a good idea? And obviously I'll make it real time, probably in a couple of weeks or less.

I believe RM brought up pretty much the same subject at some point. The idea was to add a checkbox that would change the way you send messages or create a new paragraph. So at the moment, you use "enter" for sending and "shift + enter" for creating a new paragraph but with that checkbox, that'd be up for a change by every user :) I'll get to that at some point but not even soon I am afraid.

I am afraid the way it currently works is that there is no previous message saved in the database after it's been changed and if it was, then it would make sense to be able to see some kinda "diff" between the posts, like you can on StackOverflow but it's a lot of work and not too critical at the moment. But once we're done with the core, we will start exploring more fancy things, including this one :)

@Outplayz
It would be cool to have a "like" option on the forum posts. No "dislike" bc that would be kinda mean. But, having a "like" can save people from writing "agree "or something like that on the posts.
Agreed. I recently added the "likes" for the debate comments and at some point will add them to the forum posts as well :)

Is there a way to change my email and other information? Looks like you can only change the password
I am afraid at this point it's possible to change only the password. If you need to change your email, I could do it manually, just PM me. It's a temporary solution but the only one we got so far ...

Look, you either behave in an appropriate manner or just get the hell outta here. I am sure there are lots of trashy forums where insulting and other things are welcome but this ain't one of them. You can argue and express your opinion, just do it in the corresponding topics and without insults, it's not that hard.

Btw, if I knew more about IT, I wouldn't be asking you about anything I knew would be a large or complicated effort. Just stuff I knew would be doable in the short term. Unfortunately I don't know, so forgive my ignorance.
Oh please, don't worry about it :)

I am going to try to add the debates list to the profile info and it may take some time, probably 2-3 evenings, maybe even more, so please don't get scared by the absence of the daily updates.

I am trying to move from the easier to the hardest. So first we implement the core stuff and then we move to the more complicated and interesting things, there will be video and other formats of the debates, real-time chat, ranking and reward system and so on and so forth.

@Smithereens
It's probably possible to implement something like this but I am afraid it would be error prone and rather complicated.

One problem is that the argument texts already include formatting so we'd need to first get rid of it, which by itself can be error-prone. Then we'd need to probably ignore words in the quotes and stuff like that, that's another reason for errors. Then we'd need to decide what's considered a word and what's not and write an algorithm for that. I am not saying it's impossible, just time consuming to do it properly so I'd say it would be considered at the later stages.

Regarding the limit of 30k, I bumped it because RM managed to hit the one of 20k so I thought it wasn't big enough. But by no means it's necessary to fill all the available space, an argument can be 100 or 1000 characters, for all we care, it's all context specific I guess.

an RFD is reason for deciding who you voted for. Instead of just voting for the side you agree with, DDO standards require an explanation as to why you voted for that person
Oh I see, thanks. Yeah, here you also have 4 criteria and a way to add a text why you voted this way. But I do realize that we're gonna have lots of work to implement things in the most acceptable and well-thought manner.

 An activity feed for user profiles.
Definitely will be there.

 A set of big issues with users' opinions.
Also will be there in some form or another but not too soon :(

A system of voting on debates, involving RFDs, and the appointment of a voting moderator who's an experienced in debater in some formal format.
Could you elaborate please? What's RFD? My idea was to create two things, first is "judging guilds" which would have 2 or more judges and could be assigned to the debates. And the other is to come up with some idea of "trustworthy" judges, which is pretty much the same thing that you suggested. Given time, I think we'll come up with something decent :)

For now you could just change your username to Mike (Admin) or something like that. Or just use a profile picture that has an admin badge.
I'll get to that a bit later :)

So are the usernames of banned members always in red?
Only for today I am afraid, tomorrow they will be grey and stroke with a line :)

The sites that I'm used to, a red username is typically reserved for site administrators and staff. I might sugges tpossibly using red for site admins and green or blue for site moderators. As it stands now, one may think RationalMadman is a staffer because of his red name.

For banned users, I would consider making their names a lighter color grey, italicized, and crossed out.
Good idea! I also wasn't sure about the red one. I'll check it out tonight and probably push it to the next release.

@Jhhillman
If you need money we could probably set up a GoFundMe or something.
At the moment the expenses are not that high, I am using a nice programming language and it's not consuming much of resources so hosting is more or less cheap. It may be much more problematic once the site grows but we ain't there yet :) Most likely eventually I'll add some link to the footer for those who wants to be me a coffee but that'll be later :)

I think I could come up with something not too ugly for the profile page but if you could help with something for the main page, that'd be highly appreciated because at the moment it's an abomination and I have no idea how to make it decent :(

New minor changes:

1) Added the indication of the banned users

2) Changed the debate arguments size from 20k to 30k characters (it still varies because it depends on the amount of formatting)

Suggestion: I think it would be good to put a list of all the user's debates on their profile like there is on DDO.
Yeah, profiles will definitely be extended to include that kinda information, just a matter of time. Not sure how to design this stuff ...

Could you add something where arguments that have been written but not posted (I mean stuff that's in the "type new argument here" text box) are saved even when you close the tab? I spent an hour on an argument, but then lost it all when I incorrectly thought I had posted it and closed the tab.
I believe it should ask you if you want to close the tab when you are writing an argument to prevent accidentally closing it, so it should help a little. Regarding this caching system, I am not sure how it could be done but I could play with it and see what's what :)

It's probably not immediately clear to newcomers that the time stamp is a link. Putting the link under the time stamp and calling it "View Recent" or "View Last Post" might be better.
Yeah, you are right, I'll make it more obvious.

If anyone has suggested a preview feature for debate arguments and forum posts, that would be greatly appreciated. I didn't know what my argument formatting would look like when I posted my argument, so I had to butcher my APA6th style referencing format to ensure it didn't end in chaos. If I could check what the argument would look like beforehand it would allow me to make my arguments a lot more neater and aesthetic.
I will try to add it, sure :)

@XLAV
I know a lot of people from DDO forums don't like the polls or the opinions section but people do use them and I believe it will help attract more people to this site if we have them.
Truth be told, I am also not a fan of those. I believe there are a lot of polls website out there and we could those instead of we need to do some polling and it would rather hard to come up with something unique here. Regarding the opinions, it would make sense to have something like that at some point but we'd need to drastically change the format. But it's hard to say anything at this point.

I think you guys are worried for no reason. Most likely they are just trying to block the accounts of the spammers and you got blocked as a collateral damage because of some crappy algorithm or whatever it may be. I think they will figure everything out, they just need time.

@AngelofDeath
if your username and password is the same on here as DDO, you probably got hacked....
It's a good practice to hash the passwords so anyone who gains access to your credentials here or on DDO, most likely they will just see a long random string instead of the password which they will not be able to use to log in so don't worry about it :) But DDO doesn't use encryption on the HTTP protocol layer so it's possible that somebody (on a public wifi, for example) can steal your identity but that's another story.

Well, my guess would be that the code base that they have is a mess or that nobody is simply familiar with it so they fix one thing and break 2 more, I've been there and I wish them good luck, that's exactly the kind of tasks that make programmers unhappy :(

I am not sure how they could go around the captcha, as far as I understand, it's rather complicated to do, you either need to hire lots of Indians that would solve it for you (it works for some captchas at least) or apply some complicated algorithms to solve it automatically but if it's possible, then this captcha is not worth anything.

Friends and blocking will be implemented, just a matter of time.

To be able to go to the recent post of a thread like in DDO.
It is possible just not too obvious I imagine, you can just click on the timestamp in the last post column, the one that says "5 minutes ago" or something like that.

-College is spelled wrong
Wrong indeed. Will fix in the next release.

Some small changes:

1) Removed the "Show recent" link and added pagination to the topics top right corner, it should be a bit more flexible this way.

2) Now it's possible to click on timestamps in the "last post" columns and it would take you straight to the last page from the categories or topics list.
