What is Religion About?
Religion is all about you, God and your relationship with God.

Why do people believe in God?

Most were trained from birth to believe, others begin to believe later.

Believers believe because they don't want to go to hell of course, that's one big thing.

They do want to go to heaven, that's another thing.

They want to be better more disciplined people, which is an advantage.

They want to feel better and many report feeling more content as a result.

They may want to quit drinking or have some other life crisis that can be eased by the adoption of religion.

There are probably a lot of reasons, but they are all about you and what is going on inside you.

Religion is an inwardly focused activity and that's what it's about.

Liberalism In Action

@ethang5
There are two kinds of conservatives, wealthy charlatans and thesuckers who believe them. The wealthy tell the people what to believeand the believers believe it. This way the wealthy harnesses a largenumber of voters and they make the money flow to the wealthy withtheir votes.

Trump Fixes Fatal Flaw With Policy
-->
@Vader
There is no defending Trump. If your family has someone with a disability you are going to be affected by higher prices and increasingly crappy insurance all of which are a direct result of Trumps policies. I don't know what kind of medical costs you have but I do know if you have substantial amounts you are definitely poorer then you were 4 years ago, I sure as hell am. You have to be willfully ignorant to support Trump, he's an awful president. You should start thinking for yourself instead of just believing the crap Fox News and republicans tell you to believe. They will screw you really bad eventually if he remains president. If you can't see that coming there is something wrong with your thinking.

Who else would the Creator be?

In other words you have never thought about any other possibilities except for god because you can’t think of any? Have you even tried?

I believe in intelligent design because of what the body does.

When your dyeing of thirst your body turns urine into blood to keep you alive.

A substitute teacher i had always say this.I don't see why it would be wrong.I can not find this weird info in the internet.She did science stuff for a living and was an atheist i think.So you should fine her reliable.

Our body works like a factory

One gram of DNA can hold up to 200 terabyte worth of information. To store the same information in mans technology.It would take 233 3tb drive weighing 151 kilo's

Is that intelligent design's use?

Something that helps you believe in god?

So, I can only assume from the silence that intelligent design doesn't tell us anything about the creator or even anything about anything. I'm beginning to think it's pretty much useless unless you can give me a use for it, can you?

The Creator is not a product of environmental factors like skin, you guys have to get more serious.

Well, outer space is mostly black and god is everywhere so I think it's perfectly reasonable to say god is black.

Yes but it's not a scientific theory, it's only theory in the sense of conjecture.

What does intelligent design tell us about the creator?

Contradictions in the Bible thread!!
Thou shalt not kill. Dt.5:6-21

If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Namely, of the gods of the people which are
round about you ... Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare,neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die. Dt.13:6-10

That’s good, I’d rather god didn’t create me.

So you said he created my distant ancestor in his own self-image and I’m wondering, why does god need legs?

They have to do with the topology of the universe and the topology has something to do with the shape.

You might start by looking at the choices and asking yourself which of the three universes (closed, flat or saddle) is most likely. There is plenty of information available about that.

@secularmerlin
Well, there are choices. You can propose a closed universe, a flat universe or a saddle universe all with four spacial dimensions with or without any number of holes.

There is nothing wrong with saying you don’t know, but there are plenty of scientists that have well informed opinions to offer the difference is you don’t.

When I said center of the universe in the post you quoted what Ishould have said is the center of the VISIBLE universe which is notthe center of the universe in it’s entirety. The universe in it’sentirety has no center.

@secularmerlin
I don’t know what the shape of the universe is, that’s why I’m asking.

The Shape of the Universe.
-->
@secularmerlin
We know that no matter where you go in the universe you will see everything moving away from you.

If you went to another galaxy you would see everything moving away from you just like you see on earth.

So the center of the universe is where ever you happen to be in it.

For this to be the case the entire universe must be higher dimensional.

Created:

The Shape of the Universe.
-->
@secularmerlin
It's not that we don't understand higher dimensions, we do:

The problem is that you can't picture more than three dimensions, the gravity well example illustrates that.

What Einstein did was use time as a dimension, space time has three spatial dimensions and one of time which is four dimensions.

If you add the dimension of time then you can talk about the shape being dynamic.

If you want to understand everything you will forever be disappointed.

Staying locked in a solipsistic box leads to everybody knowing nothing about everything (except what's going on inside there own heads).

The Shape of the Universe.

@zedvictor4
Remember, I'm the one asking the question here:

Do you ever think about the shape of the universe?

How would you describe the shape of the whole thing?

We can talk about the center of the universe as well if you like.
All I've done is get you started thinking about your answer.

Four or more spacial dimensions.

@secularmerlin
So you think you have a pretty good idea of how gravity works from looking at the picture. Maybe you even watched a video showing a large ball on a rubber sheet and smaller balls being rolled around it which seem to orbit the large ball.

The problem is this is not what gravity actually looks like. In gravity there is no vertical component like there is in a picture of a gravity well. Things don't orbit a planet above the equator when far away and below it when they are close. This however does not stop us from understanding how gravity works and making it part of our knowledge.

What we do know about the universe is that it is a higher dimensional shape.

It's a picture of gravity.
