(@Budda: You need 25gp worth of powdered silver. Which would be 250sp. You guys have about 70 actual silver pieces between the lot of you.
@Earth: I just want confirmation that you actually looted the church)

The priest goes back to praying fervently as the party leaves, paying them no heed. They can hear banging coming from the trap door leading to the undercroft as they do so. When they reach the town square, they see an old lady pushing cart.

The undercroft is pretty secure, it's held my son for the better part of a year. I can make holy water, but it requires powdered silver and I don't have those ingredients.

As far as I know, she's just an old lady that sells mince meat pastries. Plenty of the town folk swear by them.

The priest sighs: A year ago an adventurer came to this valley. Like you he preached about getting rid of evil, getting rid of Strahd. He proved himself to be a great wizard. He riled up the villagers and they assaulted the castle. None of them returned. We thought them dead. I despaired until he returned, my sweet Doru. But he was the monster you hear. I managed to lure him into the undercroft of the church and trap him there, but I know of no way to save him save for prayer. I have do not have access to that kind of magic.

The priest sighs and looks down.

I cannot raise a hand to harm my son, but I will not stop you from doing what needs to be done. But without my son, I have nothing to live for.

(Yeah... That might be more in line with a vengeance Paladin. But "devotion" in this sense means, honesty, courage, compassion, honor, duty. I'll note that willful violation of Paladin Oaths with no repentance can have... consequences).

The priest narrows his eyes at Snerp and resumes his praying.

Grahf looks around at the rooms of the church and uncovers the following:

B: This dirty, lightless room contains a wooden bed with a straw-filled mattress. Mounted above the bed's headboard is a wooden holy symbol.
C:  This dirty room contains a wooden bed with a strawfilled mattress, next to which rests a small table with an oil lamp burning brightly on it. Mounted above the bed's headboard is a wooden sun-shaped holy symbol.
D: Time and neglect have punched holes in the ceiling of this moldy room, which contains a few broken roof shingles amid puddles of water. In one corner, set into the floor, is a heavy wooden trapdoor held shut with a chain and a padlock. A young man's screams of anguish can be heard through the door.
E: An old desk and chair stand against the south wall, a wooden holy symbol mounted above them-a sunburst. A ten-foot-long iron rod attached to the north wall stands bare, suggesting a tapestry once hung there. Against the far wall stands a wooden cabinet with four tall doors.

Roberts and Luraxt part ways with Ismark and make their way to the church.

The Priest: He's not a vampire! He's just... he's just sick. That's all.

The Tavern Crew

Ismark: Moaning and yelling can be heard coming from it night and day. And investigating creepy sounds is just something you learn not to do around here.

Ismark nods.

Yes, and I would hurry. That church is not the holy place one would expect.

Day 2
Evening (the sun is beginning to set)
The Church Party

The priest calms down considerably as Eikka prays with him. He closes his eyes and takes a few deep breathes, wincing as another yell originates from underneath the church, reverberating throughout its walls. FATHER!

He sighs and looks to Snerp and Eikka.

I am distraught and I do not know what to do. If the village found out, they would kill him. I thought my son lost when he left a year ago. I rejoiced when he returned but... with him in this state... yet I cannot lose him again. I hold out hope that the Morninglord will release him.

The Tavern Crew

Ismark escorts the group outside and watches as Grahf silently leaves and heads for the church.

He's not one for words, is he?

Ismark leads Roberts and Luraxt south down the main road toward a large manor, speaking in hushed tones.

I know that note wasn't written by Koylan because Koylan is my father. I am Ismark Koylanovich, son of the burgomeister. When I said I have duties here, I meant duties in terms of helping run this village, or what's left of it. My sister, Ireena, has been targeted by Strahd for some vile scheme and I intend to get her somewhere Strahd cannot reach.

Help?! You just want to destroy him. He speaks to himself frantically. No. There is a way. I just need... I need to pray more.

He returns to the altar and resumes his prayers, seemingly oblivious to Snerp's attempts to clean him and the church up.

The priest lets go of Snerp and slumps down into a sitting position. This place is no haven. If you have any sense of preservation, you will simply go. I cannot help you.

The Tavern Crew

Ismark smiles warmly. Excellent! I'll shore up the bill here and meet you outside and take you to my manor.

The priest continues to sob, the suggestion appears not to have taken effect. I can't... there must be a way to save him...

I pay and thank the barkeep. I head over to the windmill.
(You'll have to be a bit more specific as to how you're getting there. Currently all you know is that it is "west" and that a road will pass by it. Are you just hitting the road and heading out on your own?)

Then why are you here? Hm? You barge in here, talking about Strahd and my son and vampires! He rushes up to Snerp and grabs him by his clothes, falling to his knees. You can't take him, he's all I got! The priest then breaks down into sobs. (Before I process the suggestion, it must be a specific command or direction, two sentences or less, a  generic "do what I say" isn't sufficient)

The Tavern Crew

Ismark cautiously glances over at the Vistani, then back to Roberts.

I have... duties to attend to here. We're at the eastern end of the valley, so everything else of note is to the west of here. The Old Svalich Road will take you anywhere you need to go. It's a bit windy, but necessary as you descend down the mountainside. From here, it is about 17 miles to Vallaki, and you will pass the windmill on the way, yes.

The priest pauses at the mention of "Ireena". Ireena? You know Ireena?  He appears to lower his guard as you talk of being deceived by Strahd and offering to help Ireena, but at the mention of his son he goes on the defensive again. Begone! I lost him once and I will not lose him again!

The Tavern Crew

I would of course personally ensure the safety of my sister to Vallaki, but I could not stay there.

Ismark tells you the same thing regarding the deeds and will that Bildrath did: he's never heard of the house in question, but there is a windmill to the west of the village. The note, however, interests him greatly. He leans back in his chair as he reads it several times over and examines it closely. After many minutes he frowns and pushes it back to you.

I am afraid, my friend, that you have been deceived. This note was not written by Kolyan Indirovich.

Lies! He - the priest points at Snerp - just said you came here on Strahd's behalf! I will not be deceived!

He darts back and forth frantically, keeping the podium between you and him.

The Tavern Crew

Ismark sighs ruefully, The Vistani are Strahd's servants, spies, and lackeys, he allows them to leave because it suits his purposes. Those three in particular own this bar and only really care about making sure people pay their tabs.

Me and other Barovians are stuck here. I was born here and will most likely die here. All I care about is getting my sister out of this village and into one of the other, safer, villages, like Vallaki. I've heard it is not as bad there as it is here, so close to Ravenloft.

Yes, I see you've been exposed to the... nature of the valley. I'm afraid you cannot leave. Anyone who attempts to  leave - aside from the Vistani - choke on the fog and die unless they turn back. Many people such as yourselves have been lured here, but they all die or disappear eventually. No place in the valley is truly safe, but some places are safer than others.

You're in league with the Devil Strahd?! INVASION! STRAHD IS ATTACKING THE VILLAGE!

The priest stops ringing the bell and beings grabbing whatever debris and pieces of wood he can find and flings it harmlessly at Snerp and Eikka.

Begone foul creatures! You cannot take my son!

From underneath the floorboards, you can hear an unearthly yell. Father! I can smell their blood!

The Tavern Crew

Ismark raises his eyebrows confused, as Roberts walks away.

I guess your friend doesn't like to drink?

He smiles awkwardly at Grahf and Luraxt, who drink silently. Ismark clears his throat.

Ahem, so.. do either of you have names?

The Vistani quiet and take interest as Roberts approaches the group. They are wearing dark, hooded cloaks that are splayed open, revealing the colorful clothing underneath. They do not appear to be wearing armor, but Roberts can catch glimpses of short swords slung at their hips. They listen stoically as he gives his statement, then look at each other. After a brief pause they all begin laughing, then resume their conversation, paying Roberts no more heed.

@Danielle
Edit: my comment "it would arguably be even more imbalanced" was in reference to (or I thought I read) questioning a mafia JOAT with a janitor.
My question remains. How is that less balanced than 1x framer with a janitor? My goal here was to reduce it to the bare minimum that needs to exist. We know there is at least a 1x janitor and I highly suspect that I've been framed, meaning there is at least a 1x framer. To me, that is the bare minimum. So forget about redirectors and god fathers and such and just distill it down to the bare minimum. That is what I was doing, and yet I'm told that makes the game more balanced. That doesn't make sense to me.

I feel like you should outline a course of action that explains what we should do today (and maybe list your reads).
