Mafia Wins!

Town

SupaDudz - Trouble Maker
Speed - Beloved Princess
warren - Sheriff
MisterChris - Hunter
Lunatic - Vanilla
whiteflame - Vanilla

Mafia
ILikePie - Paralyzer
Bullish - Sniper (Was not part of the PM and didn't know that Pie was his partner)

Third Party
oromagi - Anarchist

Actions
DP1:
warren shoots Supadudz

NP1:
Pie kills Speed
oromagi bombs Pie (fuse set to 2 passes)

DP2:
Bullish shoots oro
Pie passes the bomb to Chris
Town lynches Lunatic
Chris dies to bomb (due to time)

Notes
I thought town had this in the bag. Bullish was correctly identified as the sniper (wHy WoUlD I oUt?!)

I am very curious as to the thought process of granting an unconfirmed player two free kills. Anyway Pie played it well.

Mimes Win!

Town

Elminster - Vanilla
Speedrace - Hidden Miller
Lunatic - Seer
That1User - Vanilla
SupaDudz - Cop (Insane)
GreyParrot - Hot Potato

Mafia
ILikePie5 - Popular
Crocodile - Hated

Third Party
Danielle - Mime
whiteflame - Mime

Notes:

The game was designed to instill doubt. Doubt in trusting results (insane cop + hidden miller) doubt in lynching people (mime) doubt in not lynching people (popular mafia) doubt in getting lynched (hated mafia) doubt in not getting lynched (mime) doubt in who to NK (hot potato) doubt in getting NKd (mime, again) even doubt in lynching correctly (seer)

I think it's pretty ironic that, even after a mime flipped, I'd say that, on the hole, this game had far less paranoia than your typical mafia game. Sure there was some rampant speculation regarding game mechanics and who was what, but actually getting someone lynched usually takes significant effort and the lynches in this game were pretty seemless.

Hot Potato

I needed a mechanic to induce paranoia in the Mafia NK and I really didn't see one that fit the bill appropriately, so I modified the Detonator role from EpicMafia into Hot Potato. Originally, the person who had the bomb at the beginning of the night was the one who was protected, not the person receiving the bomb that night. Grey pointed out to me that Mafia can just give the bomb to their NK target and eliminate it from the game. Since that would defeat the purpose of the role, we discussed how else the role could work without being a) useless or b) overpowered. In the end I decided to switch it to protect the person who was receiving the bomb that night.

This was after GreyParrot claimed Mason, but before DP1 had ended. It didn't affect any night choices and didn't kill or save anyone that would have been killed or saved otherwise. It did cause a hitch in GreyParrots game-play strategy but I don't think it had an overall effect on the outcome of the game.

That was the only mid-game change.

But it also wasn't the only reason the role list was getting updated. I update it in response to questions asked to make things clearer and add notes and such, so the modification check wasn't really confirmation of GP as I could have been updating it for other reasons.

All in all, I think things worked out well. GP is right that getting rid of the bomb eliminated Town's primary defense but it was interesting to see players eager to lynch with a known Mime in play.

I know how Jester-roles are much maligned here which is why I went for the double Mimes. I am glad that they were well received.

This game is themeless in the sense that it is not based on any third-party universe or material. There are no "characters", just rules.
This game does have a theme in a sense that the roles were chosen for a specific purpose: to induce paranoia.

The game is designed for 9-10 players.

    Mafia Wins!

    Town

    oromagi

You are NICK FURY from the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.
You are the REINCARNATER. If killed at night, you will self-resurrect at the end of the following Day Phase. If killed during the day (except by lynching), you will self-resurrect at the end of the following Night Phase. Lynching kills you permanently.
    You win with the Town.
    Intelligence

You are MACE WINDU from STAR WARS.
You are the WATCHER. Each night you may choose another player. You will receive a report of all of the players that visited your target.
    You win with the Town.
    Crocodile

You are JOHN SHAFT from SHAFT.
You are the COP. Each night you may visit another player. You will receive a report of "Innocent" or "Guilty."
    You win with the Town.
    Lunatic

You are FROZONE from THE INCREDIBLES.
You are You are the JAILKEEPER. Each night you may visit another player. They may not be targeted by other players and cannot target other players themselves.
    You win with the Town.
    Danielle

You are RUSSEL FRANKLIN from DEEP BLUE SEA.
You are a VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    skittlez

You are ARNOLD from JURASSIC PARK.
You are a VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    Mharman

You are STAN from TOGETHER FOR DAYS.
You are a VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    Mafia

    Speedrace

You are ELIJAH PRICE from UNBREAKABLE.
You are the STALKER. Each night you may visit another player. You will learn the role of that player.
    You win with the Mafia.
    SupaDudz

You are RICHMOND VALENTINE from THE KINGSMAN.
You are the ARSONIST. Each night you may visit another player. Players visited are PRIMED. Once per game, during any day phase, you may "ignite" all primed players, causing them to die.
    You win with the Mafia.
    Notes:

Speed and Supa did not share a Mafia PM, meaning they could not coordinate actions. Furthermore, only Speed was aware of Supa (that he was mafia, but not his role), Supa was not made aware of Speed, or that he even had a mafia partner. This balances out the extra killing ability since Supa could accidentally kill his own partner or they could end up killing the same person (as Speed retained the Mafia factional kill). The delayed nature also means that anyone Supa primed could be lynched, reducing his effectiveness.

    MVPs

Lunatic and Oro did a good job scum hunting and this game, really, should have been over DP3. Instead Town decided to sheep Supa because they were collectively annoyed with Croc, rather than listening to oro's arguments. Frankly, imo, Supa played DP3 suboptimally - specifically, too aggressively. He needed a single mislynch to secure the win. While he eventually got it, he almost got himself lynched, trying to futilely argue against oro. If Croc was a better player or more active, Supa had provided the Town with the noose to lynch.

It is a shame that Town decided to lynch based on annoyance rather than actual scum reads.

A tip for oro though: don't argue with scum. You aren't going to convince scum to lynch themselves. Instead communicate more with the other townies to lynch scum. Yes, it is important to also communicate with scum to draw their lies out, when it becomes a 1v1 argument, the rest of town tends to tune out.

    A Note on Balance

I'll stand by this game being balanced. Mafia had extra killing power but were not coordinated. Town had strong roles. Watcher, Cop, and Reincarnater. JK is normally null, but in this set-up is very powerful. With the split mafia, he could effectively neutralize one or the other completely without them able to do anything about it. The real kicker here is the unexpected nature of the Arson role, which is a role few people would expect.

For anyone still reading this far: BOOKMARK THIS POST. Several people talked about how such and such combination is unbalanced. Personally, I have been quite clear and vocal on this matter: YOU CANNOT DRAW ANY CONCLUSIONS ABOUT BALANCE WITHOUT KNOWING ALL THE ROLES. Looking at two roles and saying they can't be in the game together because that would be OP is bogus because you don't know what other roles exist that could balance it out. You simply don't know until you know what the Mafia can do and you can't know that until you kill them all.

So the next time a player in a game I have designed says something like that, link them to this post.

    A Note on Theme

I though it was interesting that people were suggesting the theme had to be something complex. I did not realize that I had a reputation for complex games. The theme here was very simple:

Samuel L. Jackson is bad ass. He is bad ass in whatever he does. Hence: BAMF mafia.

The roles were based on the character. Do-nothing or minor characters were Vanilla. Powerful characters got powerful role. Yes, Mace Windu is a watcher because that's all they did: sit around and watch shit. Fite me.

The Town/Mafia split was a simple protagonist/antagonist split. Good guys were Town, Bad guys were Maf.

    Action Summary:
    N1
    Lunatic JKs Croc
    Speed RCs oromagi; kills Lunatic
    Supa primes skittlez
    Intel watches Lunatic
    Croc cops Lunatic (failed)

    N2
    Supa primes Intelligence
    Intelligence watches Supadudz
    Croc cops Intel (Innocent)

    N3
    Supa primes Mharman
    Intel watches oromagi

    D4
    Supa ignites primed players.

Third quickfire game using my Semi-Open Setup for 7 players (5 town, 2 mafia). Semi-Open TL;DR:

    1. Semi-Open: the ratios of town to third party to mafia is known. The pool that roles are selected from is known, but not the subset that is selected for the game. Within each affiliation, roles are unique. Roles with identical functions are named differently between Town and Mafia (e.g. Tracker. vs Scout)
    2. The game is Night Start. Instead of starting at DP1 leading into NP1, it will be NP1 leading into DP1.
    3. With 7 players, the ratio will be 5 town and 2 mafia.
Also, here are my generic Mafia Rules. TL;DR:

    1. Day Phases are 36 hours or when all players have voted and a wagon has a majority vote.
    2. Players not voting if the time limit has been reached are removed from game. (This is the only requirement for activity)
    3. If a role calls for a Twilight Phase, it will begin at the end of the Day Phase and last 12 hours or until all actions have been submitted.
    4. If a game uses Twilight Phases, the results of the lynch won't be revealed until after the Twilight Phase has ended.
    5. Night phases last 24 hours or when all actions have been submitted.
    6. Players not submitting actions when their respective Twilight or Night Phase ends will be removed from game.
    7. Actions may only be waived explicitly.
    8. Use of encryption or external sites to convey information is forbidden (no deciphering schemes or use of Google Documents for arguments)

    Mafia Wins!

    Ragnar:

    You are WARREN.
You are the GOON. You win with the Mafia.
    SirAnonymous

    You are WHITEFLAME.
You are the VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    Singularity

You are PRESS. You were the first person voted out to be on the Jury and decide the final winner.
You are the RESTLESS SPIRIT. While dead, you may visit another player each night. During the following Day Phase, you will have a vote placed on that player.
    SupaDudz

You are DRAFTER. Between winning challenges and hidden immunity idols, you were the vulnerable the least number of times throughout the game.
You are the BULLETPROOF. You cannot be killed other than by lynching. You win with the Town.
    Zaradi

You are SUPA. You were protected by an immunity idol at a key moment, forcing out another player.
You are the 1x GOVERNOR. If the Day Phase voting would result in a player's lynching, you may change those results during the following Twilight Phase. You may change the results to another player or to a No Lynch. You win with the Town.
    GreyParrot

    You are SHAB.
You are the VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    Speedrace

You are LORDLUKE. You fancied yourself a mole, passing messages among players in the game.
You are the SPY. Below is a list of all roles in the game. During each Twilight Phase you may select one of those roles to send a message to. The player with that role will receive the message during the following Night Phase.
    Waterphoenix

You are SUI. You formed a majority alliance at a key point in the game, turning the tide for those alligned with you.
You are a 1x MASON. Each night, you and the other masons visit another player and convert them into a MASON. You will all die if that person is Mafia.
(This is the role PM verbatim, but you are 1x meaning you get to mason one person and convert them into a mason, but can't recruit beyond that).
    You win with the Town.
    oromagi

You are SPEED. You used your mutiny ability to switch to the other tribe.
You are the TURNCOAT. You win with the Town. The first time the Mafia tries to Night Kill you, you will not die, but your alignment will change to win with the Mafia.

    ILikePie

    You are REF.
You are the VANILLA. You win with the Town.
    Twilight/Night Actions
    TP/NP1
    Zaradi - Waive
Speedrace - Send message to Water; NK Supa
    Water - Recruit Grey

    TP/NP2
    Singularity - Vote Ragnar
    Zaradi - Waive
Speedrace - Send message to Supa; NK Grey

    TP/NP3
    Singularity - Vote Zaradi
Zaradi - Overturn lynch onto SupaDudz
Speedrace - Waive message; NK Water

    Analysis
This was a weird game to watch. Town had some rather insightful moments... and then never acted on them. Going into DP2, you had 3 confirmed/confirable Townies + a failed NK. That was a setup for success. Yet, collectively, you decided on some bizarre lynch decisions.

Day Phase 2 (and 3), Grey, Zaradi, Singularity all FOS'd Ragnar (and speed was willing to bus) but somehow you couldn't put it together and get him lynched. Zaradi even believed Singularity to be town while FOSing Ragnar, yet deliberately waived and let Singularity get lynched.

But, perhaps the most frustrating part was the exchange starting with this:
" look at the people that are not in my townpile. That are also not in your townpile." - GreyParrot

That is the most important statement ever made in the history of mafia. It is, in fact, the only statement that ever matters. If people HAD actually looked at their collective non-town piles and focused on where those piles overlapped (i.e. Ragnar) this game would have went better for Town. It is both a shame that this point was missed and a greater shame that Grey did not have the patience to explain it further.

    Solid win for Mafia.

Important note: I end DPs and judge activity by votes. DP only ends when there is a majority lynch AND everyone is voting -OR- due to time limit. If DP ends due to time limit, non-voting players are ejected into the sun. If there is an available replacement, they will be replaced. Otherwise they just get mod-killed.

With 7 players, it takes 4 votes to lynch. This DP will end by 8:00 pm (EST) on 1/21/2020.

IMPORTANT MOD NOTE: With the RESTLESS SPIRIT ability there are more votes than there are living players, meaning it is possible for more than one person to get enough votes needed to lynch. At the end of the DP, ALL players with enough votes needed to lynch will be lynched.

Just to clarify, this is a Mafia game. The theme of this mafia game is going to be DART Survivor, Season 1. The players from that game (sui, water, speed, drafterman, Shab, whiteflame, Press, REF, dormouse, LordLuke, Supa, Wylted, warren, AROSE) have been converted into mafia roles.

So if you want to relive the drama and excitement, mafia-style, sign up!

I have been collecting data on Mafia games. Basically Town-Mafia distributions, voting patterns, etc. Basically I've been moneyballing this shit. Or at least I've been trying to. Jury is out as to whether all of this data is useful or will help improve anyone's game. But it can be good for some fun.

So I present to you, 2019's* Mafia Superlatives!

    * - Since this is the first one, I'm doing all of the data I have so far, going back to Bloodline in 2018.

Most Distrusting - e.g. "I don't care what faction you are, you gonna die."
(as town, highest percentage of votes against other town players)
    Speedrace! (77%)

Best Scum Radar - e.g. "Oh, one more thing..."
(as town, highest percentage of votes against mafia players)
    Disciplus! (46%)

Most Vegetative - e.g. "They're still in this game?"
(as either faction, highest percentage of non-votes or voting for no lynchers)
    Mharman - (56%)

Most Cut Throat - e.g. "Beep! Beep! Bus coming through!"
(as mafia, highest percentage of votes against other mafia players)
    GreyParrot & SupaDudz (25%)

Model Citizen - e.g. "I don't even lie on my taxes."
(played the most day phases as a town player)
    WaterPhoenix (32)

Teflon Don - e.g. "You ain't got nothing on me, copper."
(played the most day phases as a mafia player)
    Speedrace (13)

    Monk Wins!

    Surviving Players:

Lunatic - You are the GHOUL. Each night you may choose another player. If you would be targeted by a killing action, that action is instead redirected to your target. You may only successfully redirect a kill once per game.
    You win with the Town.

PressF4Respect - You are the COP. Each night you may visit another player. You will receive a report of "Innocent" or "Guilty."
    You win with the Town.

Notes: Press was Brutal Cop. He roleblocked his targets.

SupaDudz/ILikePie5(2) - You are the BLEEDER. If you would be killed at night, your death is instead delayed until the end of the following Day Phase.
    You win with the Town.

Speedrace - You are the MONK. Each night you may visit another player. If your target would die that Night Phase or the following Day Phase (even by lynching), they will not die (unless by an ability that explicitly bypasses protective roles). You win if your ability successfully protects two players.

SirAnonymous - You are the FILIBUSTER. You cannot be lynched unless every other Town-sided player is voting to lynch you. You win with the Mafia.

    Speedrace - Protected Supa/Pie(2)
    SirAnonymous - NK Pie(1)

    NP1:

    PressF4Respect - Cop (Roleblock) SirAnon
    SupaDudz/Pie(2) - NA
    Speedrace - Protected Supa/Pie(2)
    SirAnonymous - NK Press (Roleblocked)

    Analysis
Overall I think a good game. Some good thought processes all around. Lunatic hit on there being a Filibuster, but figured the wrong person. For some reason, Press lied about who he investigated, not sure what he was going for there.

    MVP obviously goes to Speed.

Second quickfire game using my Semi-Open Setup for 6 players.

    3. Third-Parties may joint depending on the specifics of the role. (Note: Joint simply means that more than one faction/party wins. There are no places. A joint win isn't any less a win than a solo win. There is no advantage to winning alone versus winning along side another party)
    4. With 6 players, the ratio will be 4 town, 1 third party, and 1 mafia.

Modifications from last game: I removed the mechanic that ends the game when everyone has voted but there wasn't a majority vote on a wagon. Instead, if all players are voting, but there isn't a majority vote on a wagon, then players may only unvote in order to place their vote on an existing wagon: you cannot simply unvote or start a new wagon.

I also eliminated the Mafia Captain mechanic.

    Thoughts
I want to thank everyone for engaging in what was essentially a beta test of roles and features I've been eager to try out for a while. So I would also appreciate any constructive feedback. My goal was to have all information available up front so there wouldn't be any confusion about how roles work.

There are some things I'm already thinking about changes, but I want to hear what other people think.

As far as game play, I think everyone played fairly well. Lunatic made strategic use of not killing and successfully kept suspicion off of himself.

I think we, as a community, should come up with some rough guidelines about how to handle inactive Mods. I won't play coy here and admit this is brought about by Mharman's game. He was skipped over in starting it due to lack of activity and it has almost been 2 days since the official closing of DP1.

Having your turn skipped can be frustrating and having people abandon your game for a new one moreso, so I don't propose that we do anything lightly.

However, I think we should have a contingency plan in place that allows Mafia games to continue in the even a mod becomes MIA.

I think a week is a bit too long to ask people to wait, but 2 days seems to be about the minimum we should expect.

I suggest that if 3 days goes by without an update to a game, that game is voided and the next game in the list is permitted to proceed. That mod is then placed On Hold. If they return and want to be put back on the list, they go to the end of the list.

    Thoughts?

Okay, the current and next Mafia games are more "Mafia adjacent" and the mod of the current game is a bit MIA. In the mean time, I'd like to run a quickfire game using my Semi-Open Setup for 6 players. This first series will essentially be a trial run of this configuration. I encourage everyone to read to get the full rules, but the TL;DR is:

    1. Semi-Open: the ratios of town to third party to mafia is known. The pool that roles are selected from is known, but not the subset that is selected for the game. Within each affiliation, roles are unique. Roles with identical functions are named differently between Town and Mafia (e.g. Tracker. vs Scout)

Also, here are my generic Mafia Rules. TL;DR:

    1. Day Phases are 36 hours or when all players have voted (not just when someone gets a majority VTL).
    8. Mafia has a Captain that decides the NK (target and who carries it out). If they do not submit the action, the Mafia forfeits its NK.
    9. Use of encryption or external sites to convey information is forbidden (no deciphering schemes or use of Google Documents for arguments)

Ever wonder what is going on in the Games' forum? Why it has so many posts? Do kids really talk that much about their vidya games?

Well, yes, but that's not why: it's Mafia!

No, we haven't been invaded by the Cosa Nostra. This isn't the work of Sicilians...

    ...it's the Russians!*

Mafia was a party-game invented in the 80's. It is known as a "social deduction game" where you have a "Town" team and a "Mafia" team. The objective of each team is to kill the other. The Town, while in the majority, doesn't know who the Mafia are. The Mafia have to Masquerade as Town, convincing them to kill their own (and also have the ability to directly kill Town's people themselves).

Today, it is a commonly played online: in many forums on the Internet and on web sites dedicated to the game, such as Epic Mafia or Town of Salem.

Each place has its own implementation and variation and DART is no different. Because of this, there can be a steep learning curve which can act as a barrier to entry.

    No more!

In times past we have held Beginner's Series of game to introduce people to the mechanics and culture that is DDO/DART Mafia. If there is enough interest (~7-8 people) we can resume this series of games.

So if you've ever been interested in what this game is but were worried about being fitted for a set of cement shoes, fear no more!

    * - Seriously, Mafia was invented by a Russian.

    The argument is simple:

    1. Knowing the identity of a reporter is immaterial to the substance of the report. The reported comment, vote, thread, etc. is a violation or it is not. The status of that violation does not change if it was reported by Bob vs. Alice.
    2. Knowing the identity of a report can only possibly introduce bias in how mods respond to reports. Mods should be objective.
    3. There is no problem that requires knowing the identity of a reporter.

I think the user base should be aware that one of the changes made to the moderation tools is now that reporting is no longer anonymous.

The ability to report behavior anonymously is a crucial element to being able to report in a secure and safe manner. I find it troubling now that moderation can now evaluate reports based upon who is making them.

Even more disturbing is that this change (as far as I can tell) isn't one that was made publicly aware. Stripping user's anonymity is something that should have been made very public.

Lastly, this is not just me chicken-little-ing here. Yes, I'm the one that has been reporting all of the debate votes. Guess what? Not disallowed by the CoC. Not prohibited behavior.

Yet, because of the stripping of anonymity, I now have a moderator breathing down my neck about it, telling me that "isn't ok."

Sorry, but that's the last straw. Moderation here sucks. There is no recourse to change it.

Moderators have lied to support moderation decisions. They have used personal biases to make moderation decisions. They have made threats of moderation when there has been no violation.

They refuse to consider alternatives or feedback.

They got appointed moderators while this site was new and there really wasn't anyone to object and now that they're the big fish in their little pond they've got control of the site.

    1. This change needs to be rolled back and anonymity restored to reporting.
    2. The moderation team needs to change. Either the current mods need to be replaced or supplemented with mods - equal in authority - that can provide diversity and alternative viewpoints rather than three mods just parroting blindly what the chief mod wants them to.

I think we can agree that ELO is intended to be a ranking that displays relative skill in a given area. And that things which aren't a demonstration of skill shouldn't be a factor in one's ELO ranking.

As mentioned in another thread, debates with no votes (and, in my opinion, full-forfeit debates), aren't really measures of how well a person debated.

In the first case, no one actually weighed in (by voting) to judge either side's debate skill (in contrast to a debate where people did vote and it still resulted in a tie) and in the second case, the other debater never presented a case, so there was nothing to judge the debate against.

Mike is looking for discussion and feedback on the idea of changing the ELO ranking so it does not factor in debates like these and basically treats them as if it never happened. Coding-wise, I doubt this would be retroactive.

    1. Should the above debate scenarios (no vote ties; full forfeits) be included in ELO ranking?
    2. Are there other scenarios that warrant ELO exemption?

    **********SPOILERS**********

This post will contain spoilers about the movie and the comics. If you don't want to be spoiled, stop reading.

    **********SPOILERS**********

Avengers: Infinity War is the first part of a capstone movie meant to be the culmination of all the Marvel Movies to date. The plot of this particular movie is roughly taken from a series of comics, "Infinity Gauntlet" from 1991.

There are a number of differences between the movie and the comic series (for better or for worse):

    Motivation

In the movie, Thanos is motivated by some twisted sense of preservation of the universe. Having experienced the downfall of his own people (which he attributes to over population), he believes that the same fate will befall the rest of the universe unless the population is significantly culled. Deciding upon a 50% reduction he goes about this the hard way, manually halving all of the populations he comes across. At some point he realizes he needs a better way, any decides to capture the Infinity Stones to achieve this. His acquisition of the stones is the underlying impetus for the plots of Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, and the stones themselves feature significantly in almost all of the MCU Films save Black Panther, Ant Man (1 & 2), and Spiderman: Homecoming.

In the comics, Thanos actually doesn't give two shits about halving the population of the Universe; Death does. In the comics, Death is an actual being, death personified. She is angered that there are more living beings than dead, and seeks to even the scales. To this end she resurrects and empowers Thanos (who is in love and infatuated with her) to enact her will. Through trickery, Thanos convinces Death that he needs the infinity stones to accomplish this task, and she assists him in collecting them. He has to be reminded of his part of the deal (by his lackey, Mephisto) and only performs "the snap" as an afterthought, thinking that by holding up his side of the bargain, he will earn Death's affection.

Ultimately, I think this was a good move. Thanos' obsession with death is something that might play in the comics, but would be just a bit too silly on the big screen. It also eliminates having in introduce a new character, a cosmic being at that, and avoids any confusion with Death and Hela, Asgardian Goddess of Death. His plan in the movie is a bit more sensible (even if it has his flaws) whereas his goals in the comics are somewhat undefined.

    Timeline of Events

Infinity War has been building for quite a while, with the gems appearing predominantly, and Thanos waiting patiently in the background. Only after repeated failures does he decide to enter the game himself, forcibly taking the gems and - only after protracted resistance - is he able to perform "the snap."

In the comics, Thanos' acquisition of the gems is a plot in its own right (Thanos Quest) and he goes around, personally taking them from various beings. The main plot (Infinity Gauntlet) starts with him in possession of all of the gems, and almost no one is even aware of this until after the "the snap". After culling half the population, then the protracted resistance begins, as Earth's assembled heroes attempt to take back the gauntlet.

    The Fight

In the movies, the heroes assemble at a number of points to try to prevent Thanos from getting the gems and to take back the gems he has already acquired. In the comics, they can only hope to kill or seize control over the gems, as he already has them all by the time anyone is aware. In both cases, Resistance is Futile, and Thanos easily dispatches them. The main difference is, in the comics, the heroes are acting under the direction of one Adam Warlock, who acknowledges that the fight is merely a distraction while more powerful beings (cosmic entities) muster in an attempt to launch their own attack.

With the appointment of moderators, I think it is important to examine what exactly they will be using as the basis for their decisions. And that is the "Rules and Code of Conduct."

I've decided to look at the document (specifically the Code of Conduct Policy section) and offer my opinions on the thing. My background? I write policy documents as part of my job, which involves a lot of establishing required behaviors on behalf of users for IT services with a primary focus on maintaining the security of information systems.

The CoC is a policy document. It establishes requirements and expectations of individual behavior. Policies should be concise, consistent, and easy to read. It should use simple language, brief sentences, and choose words that reduce ambiguity (must/will/prohibited/required vs. should/should not/shall/may, etc). It should be consistent, not conflict with other policies, and not rely on volatile information that is subject to frequent change.

    Now, on with the show:

These are the official site-wide moderation policies for DebateArt.com. These policies cover a wide range of topics, and you are advised to familiarize yourself within them.

"you are advised" is right out. The Code of Conduct is the primary basis on which users are permitted to use the site. They are expected to follow these rules while here and failure to follow these rules is grounds for banning. While sites such as these are generally not held accountable for the actions of their users, it is advised that web site owners and administrators close any and all loopholes for potential liability.

Recommendation: Change to "Users are required to read and understand these policies."

    I. Moderation
A moderator (mod) is a person granted authority by the site owners to enforce the rules of the site, primarily, the voting policy and the code of conduct policy. Moderation actions are any actions taken by the mods to enforce the rules of the site. Moderators have complete discretion in the enforcement and interpretation of the site rules.
Short. Sweet. To the point. It establishes what the mods are and defines the scope of their responsibilities.

    A. Moderation Structure
There is one chief moderator and one deputy moderator. The chief moderator has the power to appoint (as needed) various assistant moderators beneath the deputy moderator to assist with various tasks. The chief moderator has the power to overrule the deputy moderator. The chief and deputy moderators are vested with the power, by the site owner, to take moderation actions at their discretion, with all exceptions to this power stated in these terms. Assistant moderators must receive prior approval from the chief moderator or deputy moderation to take moderation actions, and this approval must be granted explicitly for every action taken by the assistant moderator.
"The chief and deputy moderators are vested with the power, by the site owner, to take moderation actions at their discretion, with all exceptions to this power stated in these terms." This is redundant with the power of discretion already granted to them in the previous section.

Recommendation: Delete. Move reference to any exceptions to the previous section.

"Assistant moderators must receive prior approval from the chief moderator or deputy moderation to take moderation actions, and this approval must be granted explicitly for every action taken by the assistant moderator."

Good. Strongly worded. However, as a policy it doesn't make sense. If the assistant moderator must obtain approval for each and every action, then what are they good for? I don't see how this lightens the workload for the moderators themselves.

    B. Moderation Remit
Moderation is guaranteed a high degree of autonomy from site ownership, and may exercise their discretion in moderation decisions. Moderators can take action regarding any conduct which they believe threatens the health of the site or the wellbeing of any site user. The code of conduct policy and voting policy are not to be interpreted as defining the complete scope of moderator authority. Moderators’ decisions are final and not subject to appeal, except to the moderators themselves
A more verbose explanation of moderator discretion. Completely unnecessary and redundant. Stating that moderators have "complete discretion in the enforcement and interpretation of the site rules" pretty much covers everything.

Recommendation: Delete entire section. Move lack of appeal to first section. First section should now read:

"Moderators have complete discretion in the enforcement and interpretation of the site rules, with all exceptions stated in these terms. Moderator decisions are final and not subject to appeal."

    C. Recusal
Moderators may recuse themselves in a particular situation if they deem it necessary, passing their duties in that situation off to another mod or to a trusted third-party (such a third-party must not have a track record of poor conduct on the site). Moderators must recuse themselves from moderating votes on their own debates and from moderating their own votes on others’ debates.
The first sentence is redundant given the power of discretion already vested in them.

Recommendation: "Moderators must recuse themselves from performing any moderation actions involving situations which they have participated in as a user (not in their official capacity as a moderator). In such a case, the responsibility of moderation will be deferred to the other moderator. In the event all such moderators are involved in the situation as users, moderation responsibility will fall to the Site Owner."

    Second sentence is good.

Since Mafia is having a bit of a time getting off of the ground, I was thinking about alternate games to drum up activity (and potentially new users). A low-activity forum without special coding really isn't ideal for doing Dungeons and Dragons but... what the hay.

    Basically here's how it works:

    1. We'll do daily posting. Each day, I'll post a description of what's going on and the players each post a response. The next day I'll post a new description, incorporating the players' speech, action, and decisions.
    2. I'll handle all dice rolling on my side and simply include the results in my descriptions (making this more role-playing instead of roll-playing on the part of the players).
    3. Combat will be truncated and streamlined.
    4. Roleplaying between PCs (player characters) is free-for-all, not limited to one-per-day. But to keep things in synch, not all player-player interactions may be incorporated when I post my daily descriptions.
