The god of rape.
-->
@keithprosser
I think (I always have to say that!) this story is probably historically accurate.  It tells how a Benjamite rapes a Levite woman, resulting in a civil war amongst the Hebrew and the near annihilation of the Benjamites.  The other Hebrew tribes are unwilling to allow a fellow tribe to disappear so they kill the males of the non-Hebrew Machir tribe and give the Machir females to the few remaining Benjamite warriors.

Well where you are concerned Keith, first it has to be established whether or not you actually believe this biblical story, (exaggerated or not) before anyone takes the time to respond to what it is that you "think"  about this biblical story, keeping in mind that you dismiss these scriptures regularly.

What I find difficult is to understand what you believe!
I have made that,  my stance ,  perfectly  clear on what must be over a hundred occasions now. You seem to have missed it every single time I have explained it.

You seem to believe one verse but not another on no consistent basis

Ok. give me an example, right now.

- that puts atheists and theists off!

How? But before you answer that, You need to put up an example of my inconsistency.

Keith knows, and more importantly, understands scripture better than you are capable of.
OPINION, you clown.

But he doesn't believe what you say he knows does he?  You clown. And that is the difference, you clown. I have at least squeezed him to admit that Jesus -   minus the miracles - actually existed, which is more than you ever got out of him with your abuse.

It also hasn't gone unnoticed how far your tongue has reached up into the hole of your one time nemesis.  Proper little yes man now aren't you. Lick , creep, lick creep, lick creep.

I think the glories of Solomon were very exaggerated.

Yes, I know you do. You don't believe any of it. You have made that point very clear and on many occasions (do you need reminding?) . But here you are again, given an explanation of what it may all mean and the opinions of Archaeologists who do seem to believe in the existence of these biblical characters, as I do , exaggerated or not.

And you have missed the point. One one hand we have god handing out prizes of gold and other treasure and in mass amounts according to the scripture, and on the other we are told by his only son, not to gather earthly things because we can't take them with us.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

See? He called your explanation silly and instantly jumped to yet another passage.

Nope I have responded once to mopec on this thread at post 18. You won't find the word "SILLY"  in that post. STOP LYING!!!!

You really are blind as to what I have wrote. My response was to the verse that mopac had posted and to his explanation of what the OP  verse  meant. I agreed with him, but only  to a point.   My point in posting a contrary verse was to highlight the glaring contradiction as to the actions of god to what Jesus  teaches. You clown.  And you cannot square the contradiction, can you, you clown.

AND I notice AGAIN that you  have given this a wide berth too. You always leave it to the atheist to try to explain what is meant. Strange that, don't you think?

Atheist such as keith prosser who doesn't believe a word of the scriptures, and believes them all to be tall stories; fairy tales, actually attempting to explain ... the scriptures.

Saving for a rainy day and being Steve Jobs or Donald Trump are not the same.

Like this you mean 1 Kings 10: 14.

The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the territories.  That is about 30 tons or about 23 metric tons.= $250 million today.

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

Yes I got that " can't take it with you" from the story. BUT!!!!! my fawning sycophantic friend, You will now have to explain this verse away;
that seems to go against EVERYTHING jesus is teaching here.

AtII Chronicles 1:12, God promised Solomon: “Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after they have the like.”

Off you trot now, see what your teachers feeds you to relay in response. But you are going to have to come up with a beauty to explain away why god just didn't grant Solomon what he had " wisely"  asked for? Why all the bells and whistles and other shiney trimmings,

" that he can't take with him"!!!!!

@RationalMadman
IGNORE NEW TESTAMENT I BEG YOU.
I enjoy the reading the bible. I honestly don't believe it should be ignored.  I don't believe it is true as it has come down to us, that is to say, I don't believe it it to be the whole gospel truth about The Christ and his teachings. There's definitely and underlining story within these NT scriptures , just below the surface, that these gospel writers are desperate to hide.  This is why on the face of them,  none of these stories make any sense.

As Keith prosser pointed out the silly story about the husband and wife  -
Ananias &  Sapphira above, just "dropping down dead". These stories simply have to mean something other than what is written on the surface.

But this has nothing to do with the OP. So I will leave it there. If you wish to know what I believe is going on in this instance I ask you to read this thread of mine here>>>:

Acts 5:5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
....
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
Yes, I thoroughly enjoy this silly story. One the face of it, we see people - a man and his wife - simply falling down dead and being buried because they hadn't handed over all their hard earned cash.

I covered this in some depth in my thread here>>

Lazarus, theraising

it seems as quick as someone can be raised from the "dead"  they can just as quick drop down "dead" too.

It is rational advice if this world is about to end and be replaced by a new order.   Luke's advice is even stronger:

Lk 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

Do you not see how stupid and backward and contradictory Luke is being here. Or he is simply taking advantage of the naive and illiterate of the time.

I'll explain shall I.

What would be the point of giving to "the poor"  IF as you say,  "this world is about to end"?
It would only make sense if "the poor" meant something else entirely.

This is very simple,...........it just means don't get caught up in worldly attachments and desires where theybecome a priority over other more important things, like the things that remainwith you when you leave the body or the aspects of life that involve more quality relations.

So to simplify itsimply means “you can’t take it with you”.?

So do we agree that what we call 'Christianity' today differs from judaism more than Jesus' original message did?

What actually was Jesus' message to the Jews, his people?

Jesus would say one thing in earshot of the Romans while saying completely the opposite in private to his followers. He was believed by some to be the promised Messiah. So what you have to ask yourself what was expected of a Messiah.

It was JEWS that had expected a Messiah, not Christians.

jesus is describing conditions in a new world to come; they are promises.

And bad unfulfillable and unfulfilled promises, at that.  And none of these are truly ethical because they are all conditions for a future reward.

The beatitudes are not platitudes

I don't agree, What we have here, again,  is Matthew ( who else)? portraying Jesus as a sanctimonious hypocrite and purveyor of empty rhetoric - not so much Beatitudes as platitudes .

platitude is a trite, meaningless, or prosaic statement, often used as a thought-terminating cliché, aimed at quelling social, emotional, or cognitive unease.[1]
Platitudes have been criticized as giving a false impression of wisdom, making it easy to accept falsehoods:

We only agree only if you believe that Jesus....... was 100% human with no supernatural powers

How many times!? This is exactly what I believe of The Christ Jesus. Rightful - very human - King of the Jews. Rightful - very human - High Priest. He could no more turn water into wine, raise the dead or walk on water, than you or I.

nor any special relationship with God
His relationship with his god has no bearing on whether he is human. My sister is human but she believes in her god. But for some miraculous reason she has never been able explain away the ambiguous, anomalous, contradictory half stories that the scriptures are undoubtedly riddled with.. It is again the scriptures that sometimes appear to elevate The Christ to god/son of god status with ridiculous passages such as :

When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Matthew 27.

OOh well, that's it then.  If this ROMAN centurion - who had never seen or heard about Jesus THE JEW  in ALL of his life before watching him crucified and had perfectly good ROMAN gods of his own says  " he is S of G" .. then it must be true, I mean, what more evidence could one possible ask for or need?

I have said many times that Jesus would have been absolutely appalled that a new religious ideology had sprang up in his name. this would have been nothing short of blasphemy in his time.

I don't want it both ways... it is both ways.

You do. And now you are backpedaling because you have played yourself into a corner.

If by 'jesus' you mean a supernatural being then "Jesus did not exist".

I have made my position clear many many times on this site where I stand on the issue of Jesus FROM DAY ONE.

So  to be clear you are  now saying Jesus did exist but wasn't a "miracle worker" as I have been saying from day one on this site but never once did you supported me when I have been under attack from the fawning sycophantic christians here simply for expressing  my opinions and views  on these unreliable scriptures. indeed, you have proven to be contrary simply  for the sake of being contrary.

If by 'Jesus' you mean a flesh-and-blood preacher ..........about whom various legends were woven then

You know what I mean.  So stop trying to  filibuster your way out of the corner you have painted yourself into.

"Jesus (probably) did exist".

"(probably)"? Back on the fence or an agreement that Jesus existed?

"Did Jesus Exist?" seems a simple enough question but it's complicated by what is meant by 'exist' in this context.
Oh Stop it! You don’t believe he exists but it doesn’t stop you telling us what he meant

As an atheist I do not accept Jesus as an actual divinity walking on the face of the earth,

There it is again. Talking About someone who you deny existed as if he existed.

but I don't discount the possibility that Jesus was an 'ordinary human' around which legends developed.
This all seems like backpedaling Keith. You have come to realise that you indeed do have to accept this man as existing - although reluctantly - if you want to make claims as to what he meant, such as you did here:

Added: 11.23.18 07:41AM  "jesus is describing conditions in a new world to come; they are promises".

The entitity that walked on water and raised the dead never existed; the entity that gave the sermon on the mount very possibly did exist.

Well that is at least going some way to agreeing with me. I have said all along throughout this forum that I believe Jesus existed, that he was rightful king of the Jews  and High Priest.  I too have denied his "miracles" and I have gone some way to proving what is meant by “miracles"  i.e. "raising the dead", "water into wine" and "curing lepers"  etc etc. strange that you only mention this new belief now your backs against the wall and have never came out and agreed with me before: there is a name for that practice too.

Neither 'Jesus existed' nor 'Jesus didn't exist' is the full and proper answer.
No that is sitting on the fence.

That isn't fence sitting - it's a problem with the ambiguity of 'exists'.

It is sitting on the fence. You want it both ways. But you cannot have it both ways. You painted yourself into a corner simply by dismissing the scriptures outright.

Absolute mug. I have no sympathy for him as I do for his relatives.  But you haven't given your verdict keith., why is that? Waiting for others to take the plunge before you yourself comes off the fence?

There is also the other Christian story that the christians here seem to want to avoid. that of the poor pakistani christian Asia Bibi who after serving 8 years was finally acquitted of blasphemy and who now is in hiding for her life after the countries muslims are up in arms at the verdict.

There is a house to house search going on for her as we speak. They will behead her if she is caught and not a peep from her Christian brothers and sisters in the west.

I wrote to my MP telling him he must give her asylum here in GB. His weak kneed, disgusting apologists reply was to the effect that -  to interfere and allow her refuge may upset "British muslims here at home and we have to consider their reactions".

Suppose I made up a story about you to help explain your beliefs to a wider audience
And you are forgetting that these are "god inspired" gospel truths, according to Christians. This is besides the fact  that I am real and you deny the existence of Jesus As a true human being that did once exist.

The story would be a fiction and 'Stephen' would be a character within that fiction - 'real Stephen' never did or said what is in the story.

Then the story would be pointless, and as you have made clear, Jesus didn’t exist, where as I do.

You see Keith as I have told you before, this is what one comes up against once one dismisses something out of hand.

From where did Matthew Get the Sermon on the Mount?
Mark didn’t even  know about it.   Luke edited  it considerably, which must have meant that he found Matthew’s account unreliable and so felt free to change the wording. and John chose not to repeat it in his gospel yet this is supposed to be the greatest sermon known to man.

I don't know if Jesus really delivered the speech

See, it is there again. You do know he couldn't have possibly delivered this sermon because you tell us often, that you don't believe he existed. It  is  all fairy tales and they are all characters in a story -  or words to that effect according to you. Your trying to play both sides of the court.

- and neither does anybody else.
I believe Ethang5 would give you an argument there ( if he wasn't to busy trying in vain to debunk me at every turn).

I have no strong opinion on whether Jesus delivered the sermon on the mount.
this is what I mean about fence sitting . you make contradictory claims.

I can see no reason why not,

Again, here you say  you cannot see why  Jesus couldn't have delivered the sermon" one one hand but yet believe the character is "fictional".

but its not impossible that it is was invented

But are not  " fictional stories" as you believe them to be,  invented?

The gospels can be viewed as a popular, story-style account aimed at ordinary folk

Ordinary folk. Are you having me on?  What "ordinary folk" could you possible mean? Those that couldn't even spell their own names not even when simplified for them as X? Not to mention read. Education didn't become compulsory in England until about 1890 , so to which "ordinary folk" do you refer to?

and the epistles as written for more theologically inclined academics.

By epistles, you mean letters, I assume, as this is what the word epistle actually means.  I will come back to this later>

So, keithprosser  makes it quite clear  that  he is " on the fence"   and ethang5 tells  keithprosser he is not on the fence  .

So what we have here is  proof positive that these sycophantic christians will tell members what they mean and what they think.. So reminiscent of the gospel writers who , tell us what jesu was thinking and what he meant.

ethang5 is telling us AND keithprosser that he doesn't know what keithprosser is talking about even though keithprosser tells us quite clearly. that he is indeed

I'm treating 'jesus' as a character in a story, i.e. the gospel writers put those promises in their character's mouth.

I see. I agree. These gospel writers do that, put words into Jesus' mouth. And they do it often. Yes, They tell us often what he"really was thinking" and what he "really meant". Like this >>

19 Jesus Answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 The Jews Then said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He Was speaking of the temple of His body.

But I think it likely that a human 'jesus' (on whom the story is based) would have said very similar things

Why do you think it likely? What could possibly lead you to conclude what a "fictional character" would say or be thinking or think next ?

Even if the sermon on the mount never happened

Well if we take your view of it all being a fictional fairy tale etc, then there was every chance it didn't happen

i think the passage reflects the world-view of early Christians.

Jesus was a  Jew, and this " sermon story" is told by a Jew to Jews, by all accounts.

I don't claim it is certainly so - only that i consider it probable.
But you have said that - "'jesus' as a character in a story" ! so how could even be "probable"?  You just love that fence don't you.

how would you know? You have made it clear on more than one occasion that the stories in these scriptures are fairy tales and that you don't believe them. yet here you are, telling us "what jesus meant".
The beatitudes are not platitudes
I didn't say they were. I know them simply to be a collection of sayings gathered together from many different cults of the time and presented as one single sermon that the gospellers say Jesus gave as one complete sermon.

tomeekly' accept it because the tables will soon turn and there rich and powerful would be brought low,
And nothing changed then as we still have the same issues to this day, don't we.

Christianity was a religion born of a feeling that there was no prospect of successful revolt or rebellion

Yes I can go someway to agreeing with you there. Jesus'   mission as the believed prophesied "one to come" messiah, failed miserably.

It was said earlier in this topic that Jesus is our inspiration.
Not to my knowledge it doesn't. But I asked what inspires you about these scriptures you fawning pipsqueak, not who inspires you.

What is it that inspires you about this vile verse concerning a woman defending her husband:

Deuteronomy 25:11-1: If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

@Mopac
You insult me nearly every post you make toward me which is against the TOS as well, glass house.

I am not bothered about what names and threats of hell you direct towards me, so stop crying you fawning pipsqueak and address the OP.

IT IS YOUR CONTINUED FAILURE TO ADDRESS THE OP THAT I FIND OFFENSIVE. IT SHOWS YOUR WEAKNESS AND RELUCTANCE TO EVEN RECOGNISE THESE VIOLENT VERSES FROM THE BOOK THAT YOU SAY :

and in my experience, we use it [THE BIBLE] more than other churches. Even let it speak for itself. POST 6 https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/786

What do you find inspiring about biblical verse below?

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the menare. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be brought back again."
Exodus 21: 7-8

And this extremely violent verse about "smashing children's heads against rocks" Psalm 137:9 KJV,

Yes because you are monotheist idiot

No, Poly. I had said on this thread on more than one occasion, that I belive in gods plural. that means I believe in more that one god. Believing in MORE than one god is not "monotheism" poly.

post 34 I said clearly: "I believe gods plural existed, at one time".
post 70 i said clearly : "I just happen to believe in  gods -  plural - as you do".

who thinks God flew away in a spaceship
Well I have simply quoted what the bible says about the gods PLURAL , poly. It forever mentions gods ascending and descending. and coming and going on clouds and fire with the sound of thunder. You can make of and interpret  that whichever way you like. I didn't mention a spaceship once: that was you.

but wasn't an Earthling or an alien.

No  they wasn't because the scriptures make it quite clear the are talking about G_O_D_S -   that is MORE THAN ONE: PLURAL

which is NOT MONOTHEIST, is it, poly.

So how about you answer my question. You believe in more than one god. You say they were never on earth, at post 72.

So where are they from? Where do they exist. And how do you know about them if they never existed on earth?

come on ,poly,  they are fair questions to someone who is very quick to call others names and tell them how "stupid" they are, so how about you sharing some of you worldly wisdom in all thing  gods- more than one plural..

You don't know what the bible is,

I do. But it seems that you and your church want to distance your selves from it. Is it not the work and word of god then as I have said all along.

You haven't told me what inspires you about biblical verses such as :

"When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the menare. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be brought back again."
Exodus 21: 7-8

I'm not saying anything the church wouldn't say.

Oh I know that you fawning sycophantic pipsqueak.

And you still continuously and purposefully have avoided the OP., and just filled up my thread with your bullshit without the slightest attempt to address the OP,  This, I am sure is against the rules from what I have been reading, I will recheck that with someone who should know.

@Polytheist-Witch
They have never been on Earth or there would be proof they exist.
Then where do or did they exits, if not on Earth, Poly?

 You are so ignorant.
To many things I am ignorant, I would be silly to say I know everything, Poly. But ancient history and the bible I am well read on, of that you can be assured.

And you keep quoting some religious scripture that has nothing to do with any other religion.

That doesn’t quite make sense, no matter how many times I read it. I can only speak of the “religion/s”I do know about, Poly. Do you expect me to speak of things/religions I know nothing about?  Now that would be ignorant, and silly and stupid,  wouldn’t it?

You seem to think that the Greek gods or Norse Gods have any relation to Sumerian scriptures and the Bible.

What makes you say that?I haven’t mentioned “Greek gods or Norse gods” ANYWHERE on the WHOLE of this site to my knowledge. Can you show me a quote of mine that proves what you have claimed about Me , poly?

The Sumerian gods and the biblical gods are the same gods. But you wouldn’t know that because you don't read the bible and I guess you do not read about ancient Sumerian history either.

I think it would be better if you found someone else to insult, Poly. You’re wasting your time with me.

Making fun of theists when you make up stupid crap

What crap? I quoted the Sumerian scriptures and the Bible. I didn't make it up. I just happen to believe in  gods -  plural - as you do.
But I also believe they also left this place altogether. You don't seem to believe what I believe , I can accept your opinion, poly.

So do you think they are still here with us on the earth, poly?

What happens?

Nothing. That is the problem. I have  lot of problems with this sight.   ex,  When I quote and follow up on the quote with my comment most of the words appear joined when I finally post my comment. I have to edit every single one of my posts.
My forum post count hardly moves from one figure to the next it has been stuck on  711 for some time now. I post almost everyday and my count should be well near  1,000 posts by now. I have been here  from almost day one.
