Is 2001: A Space Odyssey overrated for todays standards?
-->
@Reece101
I think so.
I consider "2001: A Space Odyssey" a masterpiece.  In the absence of any important physical  American monument dedicated to the first moon landing, I consider Kubrik's movie that monument in celluloid alternative.

Critics have always complained about the pacing of the film but I think the long deep quiet shots are incredibly effective at building up the grandeur and gravitas of monument while at the same time informing the the tension and isolation of the horror (2001: A Space Odyssey is essentially a horror movie).

I’m sure the visuals were breathtaking back in 1968.
Great visual moments don't change over time.  The expectations and attention spans of viewers do.

But come on, I don’t need half an hour to contemplate the opening scene.
The opening scene is 60 seconds.  The visual of the sun rising over the moon, the Earth seen from space is set to Thus Spake Zarathustra and deliberately evokes creation, the Logos of "In the beginning was the word."

Remember that the movie was made just  before the moonshot.  This was what a shot of what science fiction thought it would like from the Moon, not a replication after we'd been there.  Keep in mind that that particular piece of music was not well known before its use in the movie.  The impact of that shot is such that Elvis Presley started using the same music for his on stage introductions.  If everybody is familiar today  with that epic tone poem and its interpretation it is down to impact of this movie and this opening shot.

I would love to do a 2001 Space Odyssey debate and happily defend this film as one of the greatest.

Bill gates and depopulating with vaccine's
Bill gates want to depopulate the planet.
Since the planet is overpopulated, advocacy for smaller populations is just common sense.

Bill gate's does so by saying under the pretext if we do a really good job with the vaccine's the population will decrease.
PRETEXT is "a reason given in justification of a course of action that is not the real reason."  I see no reason for you to think Gates is not sincere.
Because when people are healthier they choose to have fewer children.
This is true.  As your own source explains:

"When more children live past the age of 5, and when mothers can decide if and when to have children, population sizes don’t go up. They go down. Parents have fewer children when they’re confident those children will survive into adulthood. Big families are in some ways an insurance policy against the tragic likelihood of losing a son or a daughter.

We see this pattern throughout history. All over the world, when death rates among children go down, so do birth rates. It happened in France in the late 1700s. It happened in Germany in the late 1800s. Argentina in the 1910s, Brazil in the 1960s, Bangladesh in the 1980s.

When more children live, you get one generation that’s relatively big. Then, when families decide to have fewer children, the next generation is much smaller. Eventually, a country ends up with relatively more people in the labor force producing economically—and relatively fewer dependents (very old or very young people). That’s a recipe for rapid economic development, especially if countries take advantage of it by investing in health and education."

Gates is accurately interpreting well established trends in birth data.  Good cheap healthcare is expensive up  front but consistently pays for itself in the long run.  In a society where good healthcare can't be counted on, women can't be certain how many babies will be required to sustain the family going forward and such populations generally overpopulate.  In a society where the  right family size is easy to calculate, new births drop  rapidly and significant downsizing in population is quite realistic in the space of two generations.

I am Major General Henry Halleck. Because of my duties as Chief of Staff, in which I supplied and prepared for Union offense, I am the bookie. Every night I get to predict who will be lynched in the next DP. If I guess correctly, I get a vig shot the following NP, which I can choose not to use. Since the odds of me guessing correctly and having someone I'm willing to risk shooting at the same time are pretty low, my role is basically useless.
But, if we are convinced you are town, you could guess to lynch me and then we could make that happen.  Could be a potent weapon.

Making up poems at the start of a game can be premeditated as scum if a fake claim is planned out. There's too many power roles for a bleeder, commuter, doctor, tracker, rolecop, AND bulletproof. There's no way Pie would screw up a setup THAT bad.

Perhaps although risky.  The point is a full claimed before anybody else in the game.  That applies to my TOWN credit.

Fine. I'll full claim. It gives another reason for the case against you. Two investigative roles, a bulletproof, a doctor, and MY ROLE doesn't make sense. That'd be way too bastard, and town would be WAAAYYY overpowered.

I am General Ewell Brown Stewart. My unit was nowhere to found during the Battle of Gettysburg. Therefore, I am a 1x Commuter.

and have you already commuted and so are untestable?

uh... you aren't even reading your own posts.   you also knew BEARMAN was DOC before I said it:

No, I investigated you as the role I described. I detectived you. It’s not my fault it’s worded badly or not the proper terminology.

OK, here's what you need to know:

I am General Albert Sidney Johnston.
I am a BLEEDER- if I am NK'd I last one extra DP, if I am lynched I last one extra NP.

I locked this claim in on POST #22 at the beginning of the game.

and yes i fear
tho the

serious lemurs
might turn our kits green

To decode, pls note this passage from AS Johnson's Wikipedia, describing Johnston's death @Shiloh:

At about 2:30 pm, while leading one of those charges against a Union camp near the "Peach Orchard," he was wounded, taking a bullet behind his right knee. The bullet clipped a part of his popliteal artery and his boot was filling up with blood. There were no medical personnel on scene at the time, since Johnston had sent his personal surgeon to care for the wounded Confederate troops and Yankee prisoners earlier in the battle.

Within a few minutes, Johnston was observed by his staff to be nearly fainting.  Isham G. Harris, the Governor of Tennessee, ...asked: "General, are you wounded?" Johnston glanced down at his leg wound, then faced Harris and replied in a weak voice his last words: "
Yes... and I fear seriously."  Harris then sent an aide to fetch Johnston's surgeon but did not apply a tourniquet to Johnson's wounded leg. A few minutes later, before a doctor could be found, Johnston died from blood loss. It is believed that Johnston may have lived for as long as one hour after receiving his fatal wound. Ironically, it was later discovered that Johnston had a tourniquet in his pocket when he died.
  • and yes i fear serious lemurs = "yes...and I fear seriously"
  • might turn our kits green= tourniquet
  • eels be red = bleeders

In DP2, Mharman said  to protect TNBinc tonight, doc.
Right after that, oro responded Doc is dead.

Not sure if I am reading all posts, but HOW DID ORO KNOW BEARMAN WAS DOC (Croc and Bearman were dead at that time, and croc was given as Voyager from Ilikepie but bearman's role was not given.)

You are not reading all the posts, unfortunately.  Importantly, I asked that1 to cough up Bearman's full claim since JANITORS generally receive that data when keeping it from the rest of us.  That1 very nicely gave that up here https://www.debateart.com/forum/topics/4740/post-links/198616

& then I updated the reads board with that data.

Also, mafia tried to remove me.

You can help your case substantially by providing BearMan's PM to TOWN
BearMan - You are Major General Lewis Wallace. You were the man who single handedly saved the Union from defeat on the verge of victory. As a last ditch effort, General Lee had sent General Early to threaten Washington D.C. with 15,000 men in hopes of relieving pressure in Virginia. Although you lost at the Battle of Monocacy, your delay of the Confederate advance by one day with the 5,800 men from the VIII Corps, allowed for reinforcements to arrive in time to defend the capital. For this reason, you are the Physician. Each night you may visit a player (or yourself). You will prevent any actions that would kill your target (unless they explicitly bypass protective roles). You win with the Town.

Thank You!

This really improves Supa's claim since Physician isn't any kind of ROLE either but he works just like DOCTOR.

Clearly, we are seeing some non-standard ROLE names in the PMs

I am Stonewall Jackson, I fought for the Confederacy against the Union but killed by Confederate friendly fire, being killed by those I fought for and my sheer utility  in battle makes me 3rd Party JOAT, I win with town but appear guility, I thought Bear was mafia so I janitored him.
  • This claim suggests that SCUM also failed to NK for which we have no evidence.
  • It seems profoundly unlikely to me that TP would be given two extra kills.  Too bloody
  • You are either 3rd party or you win with THE town.  I note that you and GP never got it right.
  • I'm reasonably confident you are actual SCUM.
  • I see no reason to let you survive another DP with STRONGMAN in the mix.

My justification for it is on point. I claimed, I said this

I am George McClellan. In the battles I lead, I would use the investigation done by my advisors to direct the best possible move. I also used the evidence left my the CSA troops to defend an Confederate attack. however, I was always leaned on the side on leniency when givenany information. Therefore I am a detective. Each night I may chose to investigate someone and I will learn their role. I win with the town

I'm more or less forced to accept this because of the success in finding scum  but the role & justification still seem totally off to me.

I was getting ready to come down hard on Supa before that1 confirmed his findings.

Supa- according to everything I can find that's not how DETECTIVEs work.  DETECTIVEs determine whether a target has ever attempted a NK>

In a Normal Game, a Detective may choose to investigate each night. Only three results can be obtained from this investigation: Negative, Positive, or No Result. This investigation resolves after any killing abilities in the Night phase.
A negative result is returned from players that have never attempted to kill another player (including players who cannot kill, and players who can kill but chose not to).
A positive result is returned from players that have actively killed another player, or attempted to kill another player but failed. This would include a Vigilante or a mafia member, but would not include players who could cause a player to die indirectly as a result of their action, such as a Babysitter or a Weak role.
As usual, No Result is returned if the Detective's own action was blocked, e.g. by a Roleblocker or by an Ascetic modifier on their target.
Yet you got results as if you a a ROLE COP.  Can you help explain this discrepency?

Also, your justification reads like total bullshit

Also, you mispelled your character's name.

I would be insisting on your lynch if That1 had not excuplated you.

Would it be correct to say we reside within Earth?
Would it be correct to say we reside within Earth?
No.  English grammar is a hopeless muddle so my advice to fellow writers is screw the style manual and write for clarity.  If you were to refer to "all the people within the Earth" people would wonder whether you only meant people below the surface.  I think I accept that the atmosphere is part of Earth, although we'd still call it Earth without the atmosphere.
  • Consider if Capt. Picard was analyzing a piece of sandstone he might say "this was once part of Earth!" but
  • If Capt. Picard was analyzing an air sample he would not likely say, "this was once part of Earth!"  he would more likely say "this was once part of Earth's atmosphere!"
Let's recall that the usage predates our understanding of atmosphere and comes from a very homocentric perspective- we are on the surface; all that is below is Earth; all that is above is not Earth- sky, heaven, etc.

Consider also that there are planets with no atmosphere in which a human might reside- Mercury for example.

"Capt. Picard!  I've detected life signs on Mercury and within Earth!"
"What do you mean, ensign? Are the Terran life signs in a cave or something?"
"No, sir.  They are just in Earth's atmosphere!"
".....uh, flying.... or something, do you mean....?"
"No, sir.  They are on Earth's surface but nevertheless within Earth's atmosphere!"
"Thank you ensign, please report to sick bay."
