INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 8)
Ahoy there! :)
I’m very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 8 of the Mafia Championship.
The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet’s greatest forum Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their “Champion”.
The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 320+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.
It’s a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)
- DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?
If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Lissa as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 150 communities this season. If there is further interest, additional communities may sign up as substitutes; generally there are some replacements needed both before and during games.
If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is May 7th, but the sooner the better.
The games will take place on Mafia Universe. If it’s okay, I can link directly to the general discussion thread regarding this topic on Mafia Universe.
Important notes
- You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well).
- In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate (a back-up) who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
- Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 500-600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there’s a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis!
- SEASON 8 FORMAT
The tournament structure
- 150 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
- QUALIFIERS: 10 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
- SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 7 will select 25 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
- THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the players vote to determine who shall receive the title of Season 8 Champion and a winner’s certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.

Relevant mechanics info
- Day start.
- Majority elimination is enabled Day 2+, but majority is not required at any point for the elimination.
- Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
- No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
- Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
- Thread is locked during Night Phases.
- Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
- Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, roleblocked, etc. (In this setup, that means they display as an action to the Motion Detector action.)
- Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia factional kill is mandatory.
- Mafia may communicate at any time.
- Each individual player may make a maximum of 150 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 2 hours before day end).
- The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).
- SEASON 8 TIMELINE
There will be 10 Qualifier Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates ranging from mid-May to early July. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I’ll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn’t a problem.
The Semifinal Games will be played in July/August, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

Whiteflame- Ruiz: You kept AJ honest, defeating him by KO. You won the WBA, WBO, and IBF belts, but lost them in your rematch. Because you exposed a weakness in him you are the cop. Each night you can decide to investigate another player who will be either innocent or guilty.
HOWEVER, since you are no longer a champion, the result of your action will be sent to another player who will be randomly selected. They will get the following message:
"The cop investigated [player]. They have been investigated [affiliation]."

bringerofrain/bullish-Joyce: You're a solid prospect but you're also 35. You'd better get on a fast track to a title shot if you want to make a decent career for yourself. Until that happens you're vanilla. You have no special abilities and can contribute to the town with your deductive reasoning and vote.

Honestly I feel like this game was more balanced than I expected. I figured balance wasn't a huge issue since it's bastard so I wasn't meticulous in my analysis of balance. I figured 3 mafia vs 9 town was a bit too much for mafia, so I added the lost wolf to make it a bit harder for them.
Disc immediately picked up on the thing Lunatic did (though it was kinda obvious I guess) but he also independently came up with the Lunatic claiming lyncher plan, called speed as doc, and there was something else too. All around great play.
Also, he did watch speed visit Supa with the telescope. Oro's powers were
- Vest: 1x bp
- Telescope: 1x watcher
- Ballot: 1x extra vote
- Duct Tape: 1x roleblock
Lunatic I have no idea why you did what you did with the counterclaim.
Town MVP in my opinion was oro, he used the telescope to town confirm himself to disc and force disc to acknowledge as much, then gave supa the 1xbp which was never used but still a solid move. His day play was also good.
Scum MVP was Disc. I don't think I've ever played scum with him but I want to.

Hello. I have two options for my game. When you sign up pick which one you'd like. Whichever has the majority will be the game we roll with.
Option A: Bastard Game
This game will be bastard. I'm making this very clear so nobody can be upset about it. I, as the host, will participate in the thread. Say a cop claims results. I might interject "well that assumes you're a sane cop." Or if someone votes for someone else, I may say "Oh, nice bus!" even if they aren't mafia partners. Some of the stuff I say will be true, some will be lies. Up to you to decide if I'm telling the truth or if you even bother reading what I say. This game will have some sort of theme but it'll be something really simple like food or animals or something.
Option B: R6 Siege Themed
This game will be more traditional and based on the videogame Rainbow 6 Siege. For those unfamiliar with the game, each of the playable characters or "operators" has a unique ability (not unlike Apex's characters for anyone who has played that) and you switch off attacking and defending an objective in teams of five. Note: I used this theme for a live game on Lunatic's server. I will not re-use characters that were PRs in that game (and will post that list at the beginning of D1). Characters that were vanillas might or might not be re-used for vanilla and/or non-vanilla roles.
I can adjust the game for any number of players.

Hello and welcome!
Thank you all for submitting your songs to me. There were some that I already loved that I got to listen to again, some new ones I really enjoyed, and fortunately none that I actively disliked! I saw the idea for this game and really liked it because it allows us all to discover some new music while also making it kinda fun in a game format.

My personal scoring system is more or less as follows:
- 0.0-1.9: This song either did not fit the category or it was terrible. Maybe both.
- 2.0-3.9: I disliked this song but it was tolerable. Will probably never listen again.
- 4.0-5.9: If this song came on I probably wouldn't skip it, but I wouldn't seek it out either. These songs were okay, I neither actively liked nor disliked them.
- 6.0-7.9: These songs are relatively enjoyable. I'd put them on a playlist if they fit the playlist well, or would seek this song out to play it if I'm in the right mood.
- 8.0-9.9: I really like this song. Maybe I already know it and it's a song I really enjoy, or maybe it's something I listened to for the first time and liked quite a bit.
- 10.0: This is a song that is or just became one of my all time favorite songs.
- The scoring for the covers category is a bit different. It's some combination of my opinion on the song and how it stacks up to the original. For example, if I think your version is a 7, but the original is a 9, that hurts your score. If I think your version is a 5, but the original is a 4, it helps your score. It's not as formulaic as the scoring for the other categories.
Some Results (No Spoilers)
- The highest score I gave was a 10. Apparently I was stingier than I thought with anything above 9, because there were only two of those.
- The lowest score I gave was a 3.2.
- The category that scored best, on average, was dead artists with an average of 8.54, and your favorite artists were the second highest with 8.08.
- The category that scored lowest was the one without words, probably unsurprisingly. I expected this, to be honest.

The Rules
I will provide eight categories of songs. You have to select a song you think I might like that fits with each theme and submit it via PM (Discord works too). I will score each of your songs on a scale of 1-10. I'll make all scores public at the end and whoever has the highest score wins! Deadline will be July 4, and I'll update with a list of people who have submitted as they come in.
My Music Taste
There is very little that's an instant pass from me. I really like rap, country, folk, indie, rock, alternative, etc. The genres I like least are pop, classical, harder EDM, and heavy metal, but even those I enjoy a good portion of the time, so really don't shy away from anything!

- A song about a mode of transportation (Bikes, planes, cars, trains, etc)
- A song by an artist that has died

- A song by your favorite artist

This game will be open-setup. There roles will be:

- Modified Vigilante (Even Day Submit Shot, Even Night Shot Processes)

Modifications:
The cop's result will be sent to a random player who can be either town or mafia-aligned. The only people who cannot receive the cop's result is the cop and the target. The recipient will be sent the result at the very beginning of the next day phase.
Example: Alex is the cop. Some time during NP1, Alex investigates Adam. This result is randomly sent to any one player except Alex or Adam, in this case Tom. At the beginning of DP2, the result will be given to Tom. Alex does not know whether Adam is innocent or guilty.
The vigilante's target will be chosen by the vigilante then the shot sent to a random player who can be either town or mafia-aligned for approval. This person can choose to allow the shot to go through, in which case the target dies, or "holster" the shot, in which case the shot does not process and the target will not die. The only person who can't be selected to approve the shot is the vigilante and the target. The vigilante MUST SUBMIT THE SHOT BEFORE THE DAY PHASE ENDS. Example: Sam is the vigilante. Before the end of DP2, Sam submits a shot on Alex. The shot is randomly sent to any one player except Sam or Alex, in this case it is sent to Sarah. Sarah decides to allow the shot to go through. Alex dies.
Theme:
There will be a theme in some capacity. I'll be making up stories for each player's "death" that will have no relevance to the game. You guys will all be given stereotypical Italian Mafia names (Tony, Al, Vinny, etc) but these will have no bearing on alignment or role or anything like that.
Game Mechanics:
The day will end in a majority lynch. If a majority is not reached before end of day, there will be a plurality lynch.
Example: There are seven players left. At the end of the day phase, Sam has three votes, Adam has two, James and Scott each have one. Sam will get lynched.

Feedback
Primary issue was I totally fucked up Oro's results not once but twice. You can take it to the bank that if I use a watcher again I will be incredibly careful to get the results right.
I also didn't originally tell max about the removal of hated-ness at first. I thought that was something that was assumed, but eventually realized I should clarify. I did so on 11/8, so the knowledge was in max's hands with plenty of time before LYLO, but it should've been even sooner.
Speed played very well, nobody (including spectators) expected him.

RULES
Read all of the following information carefully. It will behoove you to do so.
Activity
You are required to make 10 posts per DP. At least 5 of those posts must be substantive. A substantive post is any post that advances the progress of the game. The determination of what is or is not a substantive post is mine, and mine alone, to make.
Failure to meet this activity standard makes you eligible for replacement. If you know in advance that you won't be active, tell me ahead of time, otherwise I will have a lot less sympathy for you. For those who were insufficiently active but who had legitimate reasons for the low activity, I will expect you to make up for your inactivity in the next DP. You may receive 1 activity prompt in the last 24 to 12 hours of a DP; this is not guaranteed. A failure to get this prompt out to you will not excuse any inactivity.
PM Etiquette
Don't use PM structure, wincons, PM time stamps, or things of that ilk as points of analysis in the game. Discussion of these issues is strictly prohibited. You may not C/P anything from your PMs into the game or take photos of your PMs. There is to be no communicating via non-mod-initiated methods, even with teammates or hydra-halves. This means there is to be no game-related discussion on G+ hangouts, rabb.it hangouts, unauthorized PMs on site, PMs offsite, etc. If you suspect or know that any such communication is taking place, you are obligated to inform me immediately.
Remember, paraphrasing is your friend. You may only paraphrase PM content. An acceptable paraphrase should substantially change the original wording of the passage, and that change should be noticeably more than mere deletion, addition, or substitution. Other Issues
Observe civil and good conduct. Except in cases of exceptional rudeness, anyone who violates the conduct policy will receive 1 warning. Violations past that warning will result in you being replaced or mod-killed. What constitutes civil and good conduct is at my discretion. Additionally, all players must play to their wincon. Attempts to throw the game will not be tolerated. Play to win. Finally, excessive spamming, post editing, trolling, or thread derailment will also not be tolerated, and operates on the "1 warning, then replacement/mod-kill" paradigm. I reserve the right to bring back in any previously eliminated player as a replacement at least once, unless that player had an investigative role and received results prior to being eliminated.
Cycles and Voting
All DPs will be 72 hours long or will end when someone is hammered (or VTNL is hammered). NPs will be 48 hours long; however, if all actions are submitted early, the NP may be concluded earlier. No NP will be concluded before at least 12 hours have elapsed. I am willing to grant extensions for the DPs or NPs upon request, but it will be at my discretion whether to grant those requests. DP extensions will be 12-24 hours; NP extensions will be 6-12 hours. Votes or unvotes cast in twilight will not be assessed. Once a lynch is secured, the DP immediately ends; you must refrain from posting after a lynch is announced or secured. Only two warnings will be offered in twilight reminding people to stop posting. Posting after the warnings may result in a mod-kill. A policy of majority (as opposed to plurality) lynching is in force for this game. You are not required to unvote before re-voting, but you are required to use the acronym "VTL" to preface your votes and to bold your votes. Sometimes, when I am in a hurry, I will do a ctrl+f search for "VTL" and "unvote;" so using those specific phrases is important for ensuring an accurate count.
THEME
The theme of the game is The Office (American version). Roles may or may not be related to characters. There is a thematic split of sorts, but I won't be disclosing it.

Mafia Team
Pie: You are Arbok, a poison-type snake Pokemon. As a result, you are the odd-night mafia Poisoner. In addition to the night kill, on odd nights, (N1, 3, 5, etc) you can poison a player. The fact that they were poisoned will be revealed publicly at the start of the next day phase. The target will die at the same time as the lynch. You win when you reach parity with the town. You win with the mafia.
Oro: You are Absol, a Pokemon notorious for your ability to see into the future and predict natural disasters and other dangerous events. You attempt to warn humans, but they have misinterpreted your selfless efforts and believe you’re actually the harbinger of such disasters. Due to your ability to see into the future, you are the role cop. Each night you can investigate a player and learn their role. You win when you reach parity with the town. You win with the mafia.
Bsh: You are Decidueye. You are a goon. You have no special abilities. You win when you reach parity with the town. You win with the mafia.
Of the hundreds of Pokemon, town has nine of them. As a result, you will not be getting a fake character claim or a fake role claim, as these will be easy to come up with. As your Pokemon are not alignment-indicative, you can even claim your actual character without fear of it inherently meaning you are mafia. (Though keep they are linked to roles.)Additionally, all town PMs include the following wording in the event someone attempts to use PM phrasing (please report this, as it will merit at least a warning) “You win when all threats to the town have been eliminated.”

Welcome to Choose the Theme Mafia!
I will outline the basics of three different themed mafia games below. When signing up you will get two votes. You can split them or vote both for one theme, your choice.
Rainbow 6 Siege
Based on the video game of the same name. Characters have specific role sets and therefore this game would tie characters to roles appropriately. There would be no clear mafia/town divide based on theme and you would not have to worry about your character giving away your alignment. There are 47 operators, and there is no sort of "main character" dynamic that makes any one operator more or less important to the game than others, so even if you aren't familiar with the theme you would be able to fake claim with relative ease.
Pokemon
Similarly to R6Siege, Pokemon would be tied closely to roles but not to alignments. Theme knowledge is even less important because there are hundreds of Pokemon you could fake claim, so both roles and characters would be easily faked. This would be based on the general world of Pokemon, not the show, movies, or games. There will explicitly be no human characters in this game.
The Office

For Pokemon and Siege, the game can be adjusted for anywhere between 9 and 17 players. For The Office I would need exactly 13 players.
If The Office is the winning theme but gets less than 13 players, I will default to the 2nd highest-voted theme.

Hi guys! As you may or may not know/remember, we sent a representative (me) to the Mafia Championships over on Mafia Universe for Season 6. The Mafia Championships feature representatives from over 180 mafia communities competing to be crowned the best mafia player in the world! This is my second time representing, as I went on behalf of DDO last year. Prior to my representation, Yraelz got third place in Season 4.
I just finished up the first-round game and my team won in a sweep! If you'd like to read the game or glance it over you can do so here, and/or join the Discord mafia chat here. I was very happy with the performance of both myself and my team, and I can say with pride that I think I represented our community well. With luck, I can advance to the semi-final game; I'll let you guys know whether my fellow players and jury believe I deserve to advance or not. There were plenty of strong players in this game, so the competition of fierce, but I believe I have a solid chance.
If you would like to spectate the remaining games head over to Mafia Universe! Two of the first-round games are still underway, and the semi-finals and finals have yet to unfold! Whether you'd like to see (mostly) high-caliber players duke it out for fun, or learn from other communities, it's very entertaining!
